A relationship between chemical structure and radioprotective activity was examined in a total of 80 kinds of phenethylamine compounds and various amines, and following results were obtained. 1) A strong radioprotective effect was found in phenethylamine and in tyramine, dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine which have a phenolic hydroxyl in their molecule, but the corresponding amino acids were all ineffective. 2) Only a weak effect was found in ephedrine, but a markedly strong effect was found in compounds with a side chain substituted with SH, isothiourea, or thiosulfuric acid, and in S-S-ephedrine compound. 3) Comparison of the isomers of these compounds showed that L-erythro type compounds were more effective.
