林鳽 （學名 ：Zonerodius heliosylus 鹈形目 鹭科 林鳽属 （Zonerodius [ 2] 新幾內亞 、萨拉瓦蒂岛 和阿鲁群岛 內，有溪流、水池和沼澤的森林深處，海拔100—300公尺處。[ 3] [ 4] [ 5] [ 6] 近危 。[ 5]
這個物種於1828年由法國博物學家勒内-普里梅韦勒·莱松 及普羅斯珀·加爾諾 （ 英语 ： Prosper Garnot ） 描述 。[ 7] [ 8] 托馬索·薩爾瓦多里 （ 英语 ： Tommaso Salvadori ） 虎斑鷺屬 相似但有略微不同而將林鳽獨立成一屬。[ 9] 古希臘語 ζώνη 羅馬化 ：zōnē ερωδιό erōdios [ 10] :414 種小名則來自ἥλῐος hēlios σῡλάω sulaō Héron Phaëthon 希臘神話 中的法厄同 有所關係。[ 10] :188
在分類學中，林鳽原本因其與虎斑鷺屬 的外觀相似性而被長期認為是虎鷺亞科 的成員。[ 12] :377 [ 11] 线粒体DNA 親緣研究顯示該屬應隸屬於鷺亞科 下，與池鷺屬 形成姊妹群 。[ 11] 單型 種，沒有其他亞種 。[ 2]
林鳽體長65—71公分，体重平均约802克。[ 13] [ 12] :422 成鳥的頭頂黑色，上半身為褐黑色，具有明顯的淺褐至赤褐色的羽毛末端，形成橫向條紋的外觀。[ 14] [ 14] 嘴峰 长平均约93.6毫米，跗蹠 长平均约94.7毫米，尾长平均约12.42厘米。[ 13] [ 14]
林鳽是一種留鸟 ，為肉食性 ，主要以鱼类 、甲壳动物 、软体动物 等水生动物及蜥蜴 和蛇類为食，常在水邊埋伏於植被中獨自進食。[ 13] [ 3] [ 12] :422 其繁殖季資訊不多，但推測可能與季風有關，約在4—6月之間繁殖；而唯一有記錄過的巢位於溪流旁的樹上，以樹枝築成。[ 12] :422 [ 14]
這個物種的整體族群數量估計約有1500—7000隻成鳥，雖然並未遭受捕獵危險，但據信其適合的生存環境正在逐漸喪失和退化，因此其數量趨勢可能正在減少。[ 5] 國際自然保護聯盟瀕危物種紅色名錄 》中，國際鳥盟 因此將林鳽列為近危物種 。[ 1] [ 5]
