Volvagia is a recurringBoss inThe Legend of Zelda series.(OoTOcarina of Time |EoWEchoes of Wisdom |OoT (Himekawa)Ocarina of Time (Himekawa))[2][3][4] It is a red, serpentineDragon, specifically resembling an East Asian dragon or lindworm, with a pair of front legs, a rocky skull and pair of curled horns and a fiery mane.
Characteristics
Ocarina of Time
Volvagia is an ancientDragon that once lived in the depths ofDeath Mountain and was essentially the spirit of the Mountain.[5] It was said that a legendaryGoron destroyed it with the use of theMegaton Hammer.[6] By theAdult Era ofOcarina of Time,Ganondorf revived the Dragon to secure theFire Temple from intrusion. He also fed Gorons to Volvagia to make an example to other races that might revolt against him. Incited by the GoronLink,Darunia's son, theHylianLink sets out to destroy Volvagia to stop the Dragon from escaping the Temple and turningHyrule into a burning wasteland.
When Link steps onto the main octagonal platform of the boss room, the room shakes and the small rectangular platform behind him sinks into theLava. Volvagia then emerges from one of the nine Lava pits on the main platform, briefly flying around the room and breathingFire before entering another pit.
The battle is designed akin to aWhac-A-Mole game, as Volvagia will emerge from one of the nine pits at random and Link must use theMegaton Hammer to whack the Dragon when it comes out. Volvagia will emerge from the pits to either swing its fiery mane at him and then, depending on how far away Link is, breathe Fire or slash at him with its claws, fly upwards to the ceiling and trigger a rockfall or fly after him while occasionally breathing Fire.
When Volvagia emerges to swing its mane, Link must strike its head with the Megaton Hammer after it does so to stun it before it attacks again and recedes into the Lava pit. Once stunned with the Megaton Hammer, Link can slash Volvagia with theMaster Sword or hit it on the head again with the Hammer until the Dragon recedes back into its pit. When it is flying, Link can use theBow to damage Volvagia, though it cannot be defeated with this method.
After enough hits with the Master Sword or Megaton Hammer while stunned, Volvagia will be defeated. It will sink into the hole while clutching its head and emerge one last time, flying around erratically before its body burns into a skeleton from tail to head and its skull crashes to the ground, moving its jaw one last time before burning up and rewarding Link with aHeart Container. Darunia then awakens as theSage of Fire and grants Link theFire Medallion.

Volvagia is theBoss ofEldin Temple. It retains much of its design fromOcarina of Time, though its body is now divided into multiple segments while retaining its forelegs and underbelly. The tip of its tail now has flame-like hair. A glowing, green orb on a necklace can be found under its throat. It is capable of diving into and out of pools ofLava.
Volvagia's arena consists of several platforms interspersed throughout a pool ofLava, and it will emerge from one of several locations to attack. One of its main attacks is creating a large green fireball, which slowly followsPrincess Zelda but can easily be avoided. It can also loose several normal fireballs, which are much faster than the green kind. During either attack, the green jewel on its necklace is exposed, granting Zelda an opportunity to grab and pull it withBind. If Zelda successfully breaks the jewel, Volvagia will be temporarily stunned and open to attack.
If Zelda gets too close to Volvagia's body when it is not stunned, it will perform several other attacks. For instance, it will swipe with its body to destroy any potentialEchoes as well as to strike Zelda. On certain platforms, Volvagia will fire a beam into the ground she stands on to temporarily turn it into aLava Pit.
A short while after its jewel is destroyed, Volvagia will retreat into the Lava and reemerge to fly over the battlefield. It will then dive back into the Lava before quickly reemerging with a new jewel. As Volvagia takes on more damage, it will release more fireballs per attack in desperation. After sustaining enough damage, Volvagia will be defeated. It leaves behind aHeart Container and a collection ofTris that it held captive. With the help of the newly-freed Tris,Tri will mend theRift atopEldin Volcano. In acknowledgment of her display of power,Din will also grant ZeldaDin's Sanction.
Other Appearances
Ocarina of Time (Himekawa)
In theOcarina of Time manga byAkira Himekawa, child Link purchases a baby Volvagia from the Hyrule Town Market, intending to set it free. Instead, Volvagia chooses to follow Link. Eventually, Volvagia learns to say Link's name in thanks for its freedom, and the two part ways.
When Link returns to Hyrule as an adult, Volvagia had been enthralled by Ganondorf into haunting the Fire Temple. Disheartened, Link is forced to slay his friend in order to both save the Gorons and put Volvagia out of its misery. With its dying breath, Volvagia whispers Link's name in thanks for once again being freed.
Later, as Link crosses theHaunted Wasteland, a specter takes the form of Volvagia's disembodied head, suffering grievous pain, in an attempt to lure Link away from the safe path through the desert.
