Biography
Majora's Mask

InMajora's Mask, Tingle is the son of theSwamp Tourist Center Guide.[10] He was born near a lake.[11] He is 35 years old and claims to be the reincarnation of aFairy.[12] Tingle's father is exasperated by his son's immaturity and still refers to him as a child despite his age. Tingle is looking for a Fairy of his own and is eager to be friends with Link on account ofTatl.
Tingle can be found floating in the air on aBalloon. He uses this vantage point to createMaps ofTermina, which he sells to help his father.[13] He sells them to Link "for cheap" as a sign of friendship.[14]
Tingle can be found in the following areas of Termina:
- inNorth Clock Town
- on theRoad to Southern Swamp
- on theRoad to Goron Village
- onMilk Road
- above theMarine Research Lab on theGreat Bay Coast
- atopIkana Canyon near theMusic Box House.
In each region, Tingle sells two maps: the map of that region and the map of the next region in Link's quest. Tingle sells the maps for other regions at a premium of 40Rupees. It is cheaper for Link to buy the map of a region in that respective region—it costs only 5 Rupees for the map ofClock Town, and 20 for the others.
Wares and Pricing
Link can submit aPictograph of Tingle to win theSwamp Pictograph Contest managed by Tingle's father.
Tingle is able to identify Link while he is transformed by the variousMasks because he recognizes Tatl floating by his side.[15] Tingle is the subject of four questions inKeaton's Quiz.[16][17][18][19]
Oracle of Ages

InOracle of Ages, Tingle can be found floating on top of a stump in theForest of Time. To reach Tingle, Link needsRicky's assistance the first time, as his path is blocked by holes and cliffs. There is an alternate route through a cave to Tingle that does not require Ricky, but in order to extend the bridge across the gap, Link needs theSeed Shooter to hit aCrystal Switch around a corner. Tingle gives Link theIsland Chart that he uses while crossing the sea to reachCrescent Island. If Link returns later, Tingle will also give Link an upgradedSeed Satchel.

Tingle Statues Link has found will appear on Tingle Island. In theTower of the Gods, five parts of a short tale calledThe Legend of the Fairy can be found. This story tells an exaggerated version of Tingle's actions duringMajora's Mask.[22] InThe Wind Waker HD, the Tingle Tuner is replaced by theTingle Bottle, removing these various interactions with Tingle.
Four Swords Adventures

InFour Swords Adventures, Tingle collectsForce Gems. The Links first encounter him under a large rock beneath a bridge atLake Hylia. He will mistake Link for a Fairy and thank him for "saving" him because he got stuck while trying to collect a Force Gem.[23][24] He claims it was the power of the Force Gems that drew Link to him.[25] Tingle believes that collecting enough Force Gems will turn him into a real Fairy and that that is why Link is after them too.[26] He then says they should share the gems equally, tells Link not to follow him, and departs on his balloon.[27]
From then on, Tingle will appear whenever the Links find a big Force Gem outside of Dungeons and try to take it for himself. Tingle also tries to pick up the huge Force Gems, but his balloon cannot carry them. If the Links pick up the Force Gem first, he will be disappointed and retreat. Link can shoot anArrow or a fireball from theFire Rod at Tingle to slow him down.
Tingle posts signs throughout the stages called theTingle Times, which tell a story of an experience Tingle had in the area, offering insight to his childish nature. Tingle also runsTingle's Tower, a multiplayerMini-Game gallery that can be accessed by progressing through theHyrulean Adventure mode.

Tingle appears inThe Minish Cap, where he is found on a ledge east ofLink's House after Link initially fails to crossCastor Wilds. When spoken to, Tingle mistakes Link for a Fairy and promptly requests that theyFuseKinstone Pieces.[28] He hopes to become a Fairy by Fusing Kinstone Pieces.[29] When Link successfully Fuses Kinstone Pieces with Tingle,[30] one of theTrees inNorth Hyrule Field will open, revealing aSwitch connected to aTorchlight and aTreasure Chest containing a Red Kinstone Piece.
Tingle will also tell Link that he gave Kinstone Pieces to hisSiblings?, and promises that if Link Fuses Kinstone Pieces with each of them, he will receive something good.[31] If Link Fuses Kinstone Pieces with all four of the Tingle Siblings?, the final Switch will cause aLadder to descend, allowing Link to open a Treasure Chest containing theMagical Boomerang. Aadditionally, Tingle will offer to Fuse Kinstone Pieces with Link again,[32] causing aGolden Tektite to appear onMount Crenel.
When spoken to again after the first successfulKinstone Fusion, Tingle and his brothers will tell Link how many Kinstone Fusions he has left to complete.[33] Once Link has Fused all 100 Kinstone Pieces, Tingle will give him theTingle Trophy, which replaces theKinstone Bag in theInventory.

Kooloo-Limpah

Kooloo-Limpah is Tingle's catchphrase and are "magic" words he created.[37] The effects of Kooloo-Limpah inThe Wind Waker are always random, including aTing or a Link-homingTingle Bomb.
Name Origin
In Tingle's first starring game,Freshly-Picked Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland, it is explained that Tingle is not a person but a state of being; that is, it is a curse that can befall living beings.[38] Tingle inFreshly-Picked Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland is not called "Tingle" but instead has a real name chosen by the player. The curse is the work of Uncle Rupee, who tricks others into becoming his servants by offering access to the supposed paradise of Rupeeland. Upon accepting the offer, Tingle is changed into a Tingle, automatically gaining the green outfit and becoming dependent on Rupees.
Tingle's obsession with Fairies is also explained inFreshly-Picked Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland, as he seems to get romantically involved with a Fairy princess named Pinkle. While Uncle Rupee is the manifestation of the evil power of Rupees (greed/egoism), Fairies are his arch-enemies and the manifestation of good Rupee power (charity/altruism).[citation needed] As such, a Tingle that chooses to fight Uncle Rupee will find himself aided by a Fairy.[citation needed] This seems to suggest that Tingle (the person) might be similar to Link in that he is destined to become the hero needed to defeat evil.
Reception
Tingle is one ofThe Legend of Zelda' most controversial characters. In 2004, IGN staff launched a"Die Tingle, Die!" campaign, expressing the editors' wish not to see the character in anotherZelda game. The campaign cites Tingle's role in the "tedious fetch quests" ofThe Wind Waker. Given that threeNintendo DS games were released in Japan featuring Tingle as the protagonist—as well as aDSiWare app—it seems Tingle's unpopularity stems mainly from the West.
Trivia
- The design of Tingle was inspired by a member of theMajora's Mask development team.[39]
- Several references to Tingle can be found inBreath of the Wild.
- Tingel Island in theAkkala Highlands is named after Tingle.[40]
- InThe Master TrialsDownloadable Content Pack, Link can obtainTingle's Outfit, which is comprised ofTingle's Hood,Tingle's Shirt, andTingle's Tights.[41]
- The back of Tingle's bodysuit features a yellow image of anIndian cobra. It is said that Tingle wears it to intimidate his enemies.[42] The mark is not seen in some appearances, but is present on Tingle's Shirt inBreath of the Wild.
- Purlo, the manager of theSTAR Game inTwilight Princess, was designed to look like a realistic version of Tingle.[43][44]
- Kooloo-Limpah is a romanization of "kururinpa," the sound that Japanese people make when doing the "Cuckoo sign," a circling motion of the index finger at the ear or side of the head that signifies that a person is crazy.
