Biography

The Legend of Zelda

In the originalThe Legend of Zelda,Hyrule is engulfed in chaos after an army led byGanon invaded it and stole the Triforce of Power. In an attempt to prevent Ganon from acquiring the Triforce of Wisdom,Princess Zelda splits it and hides the eightTriforce Shards in secretDungeons throughout the land. Before the princess is kidnapped by Ganon, she commands her nursemaid,Impa, to find someone courageous enough to save the kingdom. While wandering the land, the old woman is surrounded by Ganon’s henchmen, though a young swordsman named Link appears and rescues her. After hearing Impa’s plea, he resolves to save Zelda and sets out to reassemble the scattered Shards of the Triforce of Wisdom, to become powerful enough to defeat Ganon. Link located the eight underground labyrinths, defeats several guardianMonsters, and retrieves the Triforce Shards. With the completed Triforce of Wisdom, Link is able to infiltrate Ganon’s hideout and defeats him with theSilver Arrow. Link picks up the Triforce of Power from Ganon’s ashes and returns both pieces of the Triforce to Princess Zelda, restoring peace to Hyrule.

This incarnation of Link is thought to be a descendant of the Link fromA Link to the Past.[174]

The Adventure of Link

InThe Adventure of Link, set six years afterThe Legend of Zelda, the now-sixteen-year-old Link notices a strange mark on the back of his left hand, resembling the crest ofHyrule.[175] He seeks outImpa, who responds by taking Link to theNorth Castle, where a door has been magically sealed for generations. Impa places the back of Link's left hand on the door, and it opens, revealing a sleeping maiden inside. Impa tells Link that the maiden is the originalPrincess Zelda of Hyrule from long ago, and the origin of the "Legend of Zelda". Long ago, Zelda's brother, thePrince of Hyrule, had tried to force her into telling their recently deceased father's secrets concerning the last of the three golden treasures of his kingdom, the Triforce of Courage. Princess Zelda refused to reveal its location, and theMagician, who had accompanied the prince, tried to strike her down with a spell in anger. Zelda fell under a powerful sleeping spell, but the wizard was unable to control the wildly arcing magic and was killed by it. The prince, filled with remorse and unable to reverse the spell, had his sister placed in the castle tower, in the hope that she would one day be awakened. He decreed that princesses born to the royal family from that point on would be named Zelda, in remembrance of this tragedy. Impa says that the mark on Link's hand means that he is the hero chosen to awaken Zelda. She gives Link a chest containing six crystals and ancient writings that only a great future king of Hyrule can read. Link finds that he can read the document, even though he has never seen the language before; it indicates that the crystals must be set into statues within six palaces scattered all over Hyrule. This will open the way to theGreat Palace, which contains the Triforce of Courage. Only the power of the combined Triforces can awaken the enchanted Zelda. Taking the crystals, Link sets out to restore them to their palaces. Meanwhile, although Link had defeated Ganon, the remnants of his army remain scattered across Hyrule. They plan to revive Ganon by killing Link and spilling his blood onto Ganon's ashes.

Ultimately, Link restores the crystals to the six palaces, defeating a strong guardian within each one to do so, and enters the Great Palace. After venturing deep inside, Link battles a flying creature known as theThunderbird, followed by his ownshadow guarding the Triforce. After defeating them both, Link then claims the Triforce of Courage and returns to Zelda. The three triangles unite into the collective Triforce, and Link's wish awakens Zelda.

A Link to the Past

InA Link to the Past, Link lives with hisuncle in a house nearHyrule Castle. During this time, the land of Hyrule was plagued by a sudden disaster, until the wizardAgahnim appeared at the court of theKing of Hyrule and quelled the upheaval. Named chief adviser to the throne, he soon seized power from the king and kidnapped the sixMaidens, descendants of the seven Sages of long ago. The Maidens were taken to the castle tower and never seen again. One night, Link is awakened by a telepathic message fromPrincess Zelda, who says that she is locked in the castle dungeon. As the message closes, Link finds his uncle ready for battle, telling Link to remain in bed. After his uncle leaves, however, Link ignores his uncle's command and follows him to the dungeons under the castle. When he arrives, he finds his uncle mortally wounded. Link's uncle tells Link to rescue Princess Zelda from her prison, giving him hisSword andShield. Link navigates the castle and rescues Zelda from her cell, and the two escape into a secret passage through the sewers that leads to theSanctuary, where they meet theLoyal Sage. Link is informed that Agahnim intends to open the seal to theDark World, a realm once sealed off long ago by the seven Sages when Ganon and his army of evil were banished into the Sacred Realm, which became the Dark World. The kidnapped Maidens were sent into the Dark World to open this seal, and Agahnim intended to do the same to Zelda. Link is told by the man that the only thing that can defeat Agahnim is the Master Sword, and the Sage tells him to seek the elderSahasrahla to learn more.

Link finds the elder near theEastern Palace. To prove that he is worthy to wield the Master Sword, Sahasrahla sends Link to find the threePendants of Virtue, hidden in dungeons across Hyrule and guarded by mythical defenders. Sahasrahla becomes Link's mentor, offering him hints and advice at key stages of his journey. After retrieving the Pendants, Link takes them to the resting place of the Master Sword deep in theLost Woods. As Link draws the sword from its pedestal, Zelda telepathically calls him to the Sanctuary, informing him thatsoldiers of Hyrule Castle have arrived. Link arrives at the Sanctuary moments after the soldiers have vacated, where he learns from the dying Sage that Zelda has been taken back to Hyrule Castle. Link goes to rescue her but arrives too late; Agahnim sends Zelda to the Dark World which opens the seal. Link then faces Agahnim in battle and defeats him, but fails to kill him as Agahnim teleports Link to the Dark World as well.

To save Hyrule, Link is required to rescue the seven captive Maidens from dungeons scattered across the Dark World. Once the seven Maidens are freed, including Princess Zelda, they use their power to break the barrier aroundGanon's Tower, where Link faces Agahnim again. Link defeats him a second time, and Ganon rises from Agahnim's body and flies away. Link chases after him, finally confronting him inside thePyramid of Power at the center of the Dark World. After a battle resulting in Ganon's demise, Link touches the Triforce and restores both the Dark World and Hyrule to their former state before Ganon intervened.

Link's Awakening

InLink's Awakening, Link is seen aboard his ship after leavingHyrule; however, he is soon caught in a deadly thunderstorm which results in the destruction of his ship. His unconscious body is later found byMarin on a faraway island's shores. When he awakes, he discovers that he had miraculously been washed ashore onKoholint Island and makes preparations to leave it by first finding his missingSword. A mysteriousOwl then approaches Link and tells him about a sleeping being on Koholint Island, theWind Fish, and that Link can only leave the Island once the Wind Fish has been awoken from its eternal slumber. To awaken the Wind Fish, Link had to embark on a long journey and go through many Dungeons to retrieve theInstrument of the Sirens.

Link is eventually instructed by the Owl to go to theAncient Ruins where he reads theWriting on the Wall and discovers the startling truth about Koholint Island. It is but a dream inside the mind of the Wind Fish which has been invaded byNightmares and who is unable to awaken. If the Wind Fish awakes, Koholint Island will disappear. Link had been pulled into the Wind Fish's dream world and is now the only one who can awaken it. He eventually acquires all eight Instruments of the Sirens and defeats all of the Nightmares, thus awaking the Wind Fish. As Koholint Island fades away, Link is forced out by a stream of water and awakens to find himself on a wooden board, back in the ocean. When he looks up, he sees the Wind Fish flying overhead and smiles.

Link as a child inOcarina of Time

InOcarina of Time, Child Link has been raised as one of theKokiri, the children ofKokiri Forest. Unlike the other Kokiri, Link does not have aFairy companion and is thus shunned by their self-proclaimed leader,Mido. Link has a nightmare involving a princess fleeing from a man who then attacks him. The boy's life changes one day when theGreat Deku Tree, the forest's guardian, sendsNavi the Fairy to Link with instructions to bring him immediately. A curse has been cast on the Great Deku Tree, and he asks Link to break it. While Link is successful in defeating the monsters inside the Tree, the Great Deku Tree was doomed to die before Link started.[176] He had been cursed by a man namedGanondorf, as revenge for not giving him theKokiri's Emerald. He warns Link that this evil man seeks theTriforce, and fears a great calamity will befall Hyrule should he seize it. Before passing away, the Great Deku Tree directs Link toHyrule Castle where he is to findPrincess Zelda.

Link as an adult inOcarina of Time

At theCastle Courtyard, Link meets Princess Zelda. She believes that Ganondorf is seeking the Triforce. Zelda's description of Ganondorf matches that of the man who killed the Great Deku Tree, as well as the man from Link's nightmare. Zelda asks Link to obtain the threeSpiritual Stones so that he can enter theSacred Realm and claim the Triforce before Ganondorf reaches it, and ultimately save Hyrule. Link collects the other two stones: the first fromDarunia, the leader of theGorons, and the second fromRuto, the princess of theZoras. Link returns to Hyrule Castle, where Ganondorf is pursuing Zelda and her caretaker Impa on horseback, as in his earlier nightmare. Link attempts to stop Ganondorf, who warns him not to interfere with his plans. After Ganondorf rides off, Link retrieves theOcarina of Time that Zelda had left behind for him. Inside theTemple of Time, Link uses the Ocarina of Time and the Spiritual Stones to open the door to the Sacred Realm. Through the door, Link finds theMaster Sword, a legendary sword forged to destroy evil. As he pulls the Master Sword from its pedestal, Link is sealed away, and Ganondorf appears and claims the Triforce for himself. Seven years later, an older Link is awakened as theHero of Time byRauru, theSage of Light.[177] Rauru explains that Link's spirit was sealed for seven years until he was old enough to wield the Master Sword and defeat Ganondorf, who is now the King of Evil. The seven Sages can imprison Ganondorf in the Sacred Realm, but five are not aware of their identities as Sages. Link is returned to the Temple of Time; there he meets the mysteriousSheik, who guides him to temples under Ganondorf's control. Link defeats the evil lurking in each temple, thus awakening Saria, Darunia, Ruto, Impa andNabooru as the Sages. Link also returns to the Kokiri Forest, where he finds that none of his friends have grown up, and most now no longer recognize him.[178] After awakening Saria as a Sage, Link also finds that theDeku Tree Sprout has sprouted as the successor to the Great Deku Tree. He reveals Link's hidden past and explains to him that he is not a Kokiri, but actually aHylian, orphaned in thewars that raged before Hyrule was united. While in theLost Woods,Fado also references the fact that Link is not a Kokiri by asking Link if he is going to become a Stalfos.[179][180] When Link was a baby, his mother fled with him to Kokiri Forest and, mortally wounded, left him under the Deku Tree's protection. He was brought up as one of the Kokiri and knew no differently.[156]

After the five Sages awaken, Sheik reveals herself to be Princess Zelda in disguise and the seventh Sage. She tells Link that Ganondorf's heart was unbalanced, causing the Triforce to split into three pieces. Ganondorf acquired only theTriforce of Power, while Zelda received theTriforce of Wisdom and Link theTriforce of Courage. Ganondorf then kidnaps Zelda and imprisons her in hiscastle. The other six Sages help Link enter the castle, where he fights to the evil king's sanctum. There, Link frees Zelda and nearly defeats Ganondorf, but he destroys the castle in an attempt to kill Link and Zelda. After the duo escapes the collapsing castle, Ganondorf emerges from the rubble and engages Link. Using the Triforce of Power, he transforms from his human form into a boar-like monster named Ganon and immediately knocks the Master Sword from Link's hand. With Zelda's aid, Link retrieves the Master Sword and defeats Ganon. The seven Sages then seal Ganondorf into the Dark Realm. The battle now over, Zelda uses the Ocarina of Time to send Link back to his original time to live out his childhood, at which point Navi departs. He is last seen when he encounters Princess Zelda again in the Castle Courtyard to warn her about Ganondorf and the future events that would unfold.[181]

Link
Several months after rescuing Princess Zelda and saving the land of Hyrule, Link set foot into the mysterious world of Termina by chance while in the midst of a new journey. There, Link heard a frightful rumor that in just three days, the moon would fall from the heavens onto that land...

Majora's Mask occurs shortly afterGanondorf's defeat when Link is sent back to his childhood at the end ofOcarina of Time, beginning a new history in which Ganondorf never rose to power. After leavingHyrule and riding deep into a mysterious forest in search ofNavi,[181] he is ambushed by aSkull Kid who is possessed byMajora's Mask, who steals Link's horseEpona and the magicalOcarina of Time (Item). Chasing the Skull Kid, Link falls into a crevasse and arrives in a world calledTermina. He must save this land from the evil of Majora's Mask, which has drawn theMoon into a decaying orbit, which will cause it to crash into Termina's capital city in three days, killing everyone. Link uses theOcarina of Time (reclaimed early on) and the "Song of Time", which sends him back in time when he plays it, to relive these three days again and again in order to prevent the disaster. Along the way, Link finds many magical masks of his own, a handful of which allow him to transform. Those masks can turn him into a rock-likeGoron, a petite plant-likeDeku Scrub, a graceful aquaticZora, or the powerfulFierce Deity Link.

Eventually, Link succeeds in freeing theGuardian Deities, enigmaticDeities who can halt the Moon's descent, and confronts the Skull Kid. At this point, Majora, the evil entity residing inside Majora's Mask, abandons its now useless host and retreats into the core of the Moon. Link give chase, and after a long and heated battle against the three incarnations of Majora, the entity is finally defeated and the menacing Moon disappears. Upon returning the now lifeless mask to theHappy Mask Salesman, Link leaves his new friends and continues his journey, while the people of Termina once more celebrate the dawn of a new day. It is unknown whether or not he returned to Hyrule.

During his life afterMajora's Mask, up until and after his death, he lamented the fact that he was not remembered as a hero despite saving both Hyrule and Termina, and was unable to pass on his skills and teachings to the next generation. In order to ease his regrets and finally pass on his knowledge, he teaches the sevenHidden Skills to his descendant, the Link ofTwilight Princess.[158][182]

Link is the grandson ofSmith, the blacksmith ofHyrule Town.[185] They live just outside Hyrule Town inSouth Hyrule Field, and Link goes to thePicori Festival with his childhood friend,Princess Zelda.[186][187] During the award ceremony for the Festival's sword-fighting tournament, the winner,Vaati, shatters the legendaryPicori Blade and releases the monsters that had been sealed in theBound Chest.[188][189] Princess Zelda uses her power to send the monsters away, and despite Link's attempt to defend her, Vaati turns her to stone to prevent her from interfering with his plans.[190] Afterward, theKing Daltus sends Link to theMinish Woods to find theMinish, in the hopes that they can reforge theBroken Picori Blade so that it can be used against Vaati.[191][192] As he travels through the Woods, Link meetsEzlo, who serves as his companion throughout his quest.[193] Aside from his frequent advice and sarcastic comments, Ezlo grants Link the power to shrink down to Minish size.[194] Link meets with theGentari, the elder of theMinish Village, and is told that in order to reforge the sacred Picori Blade, he must acquire theFour Elements, the embodiment of the sacred powers of earth, fire, water and wind.[195]

After finding theEarth Element inDeepwood Shrine,[196] Link is told to take the Broken Picori Blade toMelari, the elder of theMountain Minish, in order to reforge the Picori Blade into theWhite Sword.[197] Once Link gathers the Four Elements, he brings the White Sword to theElemental Sanctuary hidden within the courtyard ofHyrule Castle.[198] There, it is infused with the Elements one by one, fully restoring the sacredFour Sword – a legendary blade with the power to split one warrior into four.[199] During Link's quest to find the Four Elements, Vaati impersonates King Daltus,[200] using him as a disguise to search for theLight Force.[201]

After restoring the Four Sword to its full power, Link and Ezlo discover that the Light Force has been passed down through Hyrule's princesses,[202] and actually resides within Princess Zelda herself.[203] Vaati secretly follows them,[204] and upon discovering the true hiding place of the Light Force,[205] prepares to extract it from Princess Zelda.[206] Link rushes to her rescue, vanquishes Vaati,[207] and uses the power of the Four Sword to restore Princess Zelda.[208]

With Vaati defeated, theMage's Cap is donned by Princess Zelda and used to restore Hyrule from the damage Vaati had caused.[209] Due to her righteous wish and the power of the Light Force within her, many miracles happen as a result.[210] With the land saved, Ezlo, whose curse had also been broken,[211] leaves Link, returning back to the world of the Minish.[212]

He then leaves Midna to die from the world's light forced upon her, prompting Link to bring her to Zelda to help her. Link learns that he needs the Master Sword to return to human form. Zelda sacrifices herself to heal Midna with her power before vanishing mysteriously. Moved by her sacrifice, Midna agrees to help Link find the Master Sword. After finding the legendary blade, Link is cleansed of the magic that kept him in wolf form, transforming it into theShadow Crystal. Using this crystal, Link is able to switch between both forms at will.

Midna leads Link to theMirror of Twilight located deep within theGerudo Desert, the only known gateway between theTwilight Realm and Hyrule. However, they discover that the mirror is shattered. The ghostly Sages there explain that Zant tried to destroy it, but he was only able to shatter it into fragments; only the true ruler of the Twili can completely destroy the Mirror of Twilight. They also reveal that they used it a century ago to banish Ganondorf, the Gerudo leader who attempted to steal the Triforce, to the Twilight Realm when executing him failed. Assisted by an underground group calledThe Resistance, they meet in Castle Town, Link and Midna set out to retrieve the missing shards of the mirror, defeating those they infected. Once the portal is restored, Midna is revealed to be the true ruler of the Twilight Realm, usurped by Zant when he cursed her into her current form. Confronting Zant, Link and Midna learn that Zant's coup was made possible when he forged a pact with Ganondorf, who asked for Zant's assistance in conquering Hyrule. After Link defeats Zant, Midna recovers the Fused Shadows, but destroys Zant after learning that only Ganondorf's death can release her from her curse. Returning to Hyrule, Link and Midna find Ganondorf in Hyrule Castle, with a lifeless Zelda suspended above his head. Ganondorf fights Link by possessing Zelda's body and eventually by transforming into a beast, but Link defeats him and Midna is able to resurrect Zelda. Ganondorf then revives, and Midna teleports Link and Zelda outside the castle so she can hold him off with the Fused Shadow. However, as Hyrule Castle collapses, it is revealed that Ganondorf was victorious as he crushes Midna's helmet. Ganondorf engages Link on horseback, and, assisted by Zelda and the Light Spirits, Link eventually knocks Ganondorf off his horse and they duel on foot before Link strikes down Ganondorf and plunges the Master Sword into his chest. With Ganondorf dead, the Light Spirits not only bring Midna back to life, but restore her to her true form. After bidding farewell to Link and Zelda, Midna returns home before destroying the Mirror of Twilight with a tear to maintain balance between Hyrule and the Twilight Realm. Near the end, as Hyrule Castle is rebuilt, Link leaves Ordon Village heading to parts unknown.

This incarnation of Link is given the title of "Hero of Twilight".[30]

He is an apprentice of a master engineer, namedAlfonzo, who has helped him in order to become aRoyal Engineer. When Zelda presents Link with acertificate for this achievement,[215] she also gives him a letter, telling him to meet with her, to discuss her suspicions over the mysteriousChancellor Cole as well as the disappearingSpirit Tracks. When Link sneaks Zelda out of theCastle, they meet up with Alfonzo, who escorts them to theTower of Spirits by train. However, as the Spirit Tracks begin to fade, they crash, and are then ambushed by the chancellor, who attacks the trio. Link and his master are knocked unconscious while Zelda's spirit is separated from her body, which is seized by Cole's apprentice,Byrne. Link awakes back inHyrule Castle to discover that Zelda is now a ghost and that Link is the only person who can see her. After visitingAnjean in the Tower of Spirits, he agrees to help her in defeating Chancellor Cole and recover her body in the process.

After Link and Zelda travel up to the Tower of Spirits to recover aRail Map, a Phantom Knight attacks him, but Zelda charges at the Phantom just in time to take control of its body. After this, Link and Zelda begin their journey to restore the Tower of Spirits and the Spirit Tracks, traveling across the overworld using theSpirit Train that is granted to Link byAnjean. Whenever Link returns to the Spirit Tower to obtain another Rail Map, Princess Zelda possesses a Phantom's armor in order to aid the young hero. As the pair continues to travel, Link and Zelda establish a close friendship as the two get to know each other better.

Once Princess Zelda recovers her body from Malladus with the aid of Link, the two together face up against the Demon King, who has now taken over Chancellor Cole's body. Together, Link and Zelda deal the final blow on Malladus using theLokomo Sword, and shortly after, Anjean and the rest of the Lokomos depart towards the heavens. As they leave, Anjean entrusts Princess Zelda to watch over the land, asking Link to help her as well.[216] Link and Zelda are then seen holding hands as they witness the departure of the Lokomos. Unlike other instances where Link departs from the land after having saved it, the young hero stays in Hyrule to fulfill Anjean's request, where he continues to be either an engineer or a warrior, depending on which Link chose. This is witnessed when Princess Zelda gets up from her seat in her office and waves out the window after having heard either a train's whistle or the clanking of swords.

Skyward Sword

InSkyward Sword, Link has lived his entire life onSkyloft. He is childhood friends withZelda, and they attend theKnight Academy together, where he is bullied by rival studentGroose.[217][218] He shares a divided room at the Knight Academy withFledge. On his desk can be seen several tools along with an incomplete wood carving project, and on his bookshelf, two completed and painted projects of hisCrimson Loftwing and aRemlit, suggesting he practices wood carving as a hobby.

The Wooden Statues found inside Link's room

In the morning of theWing Ceremony, Link is having a nightmare aboutThe Imprisoned. He is woken up in shock by Zelda'sLoftwing that brought him aLetter from Zelda.[219] After waking up, Link prepares himself for the Wing Ceremony, an important part of the initiation of new knights of Skyloft. After the ceremony, Link and Zelda go for a flight together on theirLoftwings, when Zelda and her Loftwing are pulled below the clouds during a sudden and unusual storm. That night, Link is visited byFi, a being sent by the goddessHylia in order to help him search for Zelda onthe Surface. Fi leads Link to theGoddess Sword, and the following day, he ventures to the Surface. On the Surface, Link meets anold woman in theSealed Temple at theSealed Grounds. This woman assures Link that Zelda is safe and has embarked on a quest of her own, and that he needs to continue to track her. While searching for Zelda, Link discovers that Zelda is also being followed by two other people:Impa, a servant of Hylia sent to protect Zelda on her quest; andGhirahim, a self-proclaimed demon lord who claims responsibility for the storm that dragged Zelda to the Surface.

Eventually, Link finally catches up to Zelda with Impa at the ancientTemple of Time, but their reunion is cut short when Ghirahim finds and attacks the duo. Impa holds Ghirahim at bay as Zelda grants Link theGoddess's Harp. He then holds off Ghirahim in order for Zelda and Impa to escape through theGate of Time, which Impa destroys as soon as she and Zelda are through. Back at the Sealed Temple, the old woman shows Link a similar portal that leads to the same place as the portal at the Temple of Time, and explains that Link needs to strengthen the Goddess Sword in order to use the portal. In order to strengthen the sword, Link must temper it in theSacred Flames hidden in various places on the Surface. Before he can set out on his new quest, however, a giant beast known asThe Imprisoned, which was sealed in a pit outside the temple, breaks its seal and begins to climb toward the temple. With great effort, Link stops it and reseals it before it can reach the temple, and then sets out in order to find the Sacred Flames. After passing the threetrials of the goddess,[220] gaining spiritual growth,[221] and transforming the Goddess Sword into theMaster Sword,[222] Link returns to the portal in the Sealed Temple. Before he can use the portal, the Imprisoned breaks its seal again. Link reseals the creature again with the aid of Groose, who had followed Link to the Surface on his second visit to the Sealed Temple. Link then enters the second Gate of Time and reunites with Zelda, who explains that Link is the goddess's chosen hero,[223] before telling him that she, as Hylia's mortal reincarnation, must remain in a deep sleep to keep the demon kingDemise, the true form of the Imprisoned, sealed within his prison.[224] She then informs Link that he must find and use theTriforce to destroy Demise so that she will be able to wake up in their own time.[225]

Link sets out to theSky Keep and obtains the Triforce, using its might to wish for the eradication of Demise.[226] Zelda is finally released from her duty in the present, but shortly after, Ghirahim abducts her and transports her to the past, planning to resurrect Demise in that time period.[227] Despite Link's attempts to stop him, Ghirahim sacrifices Zelda's soul to Demise, thus allowing Demise to break free of his seal. Link then challenges Demise, who is impressed with Link's courage, and thus accepts the challenge. Ultimately, Link defeats Ghirahim and Demise, and seals the remains of the demon king in theMaster Sword. But before being sealed, Demise warns him that his hatred will bereborn as a being to pursue domination of the world, as well as those with theblood of the goddess and spirit of the hero, in a cycle without end.[172] Back in the present, Zelda decides to remain on the Surface, and wonders what Link plans to do.[228] Link smiles, hinting that he, too, plans to stay on the Surface with Zelda and help her watch over the Triforce.

This incarnation is given the title of "Hero of the Sky".

A Link Between Worlds

InA Link Between Worlds, Link dreams that he is in an unknown realm with afamiliar character. He is about to engage in battle, butGulley comes into Link's room and wakes him up from his sleep. In theBlacksmith's Forge, theCaptain of the Guard comes to pick up the new sword that theBlacksmith forged for him. But he forgets it as he leaves, and Link is sent to return it to him. Shortly afterward, he encounters Yuga, who has transformed the Captain into aPainting on theSanctuary's wall after he tried to defendSeres, thePriest's daughter. He then traps Seres herself in a Painting. Using theForgotten Sword, Link attacks Yuga, but Yuga evades the attack byWall Merging. Link crashes into the wall and is knocked unconscious. After this, Yuga leaves with Seres' Painting in hand. Link eventually wakes up in his house and meets a mysterious person namedRavio. After telling Ravio about Yuga, Link is instructed to go seePrincess Zelda. Asking if he can stay in Link's house, Ravio gives him a strange bracelet in exchange. When Link meets Zelda, she gives him the Pendant of Courage and tells him to go meetSahasrahla. Once Link does this, he is then told to findOsfala, who is in the Eastern Palace, and is a descendant of theSeven Sages. Sahasrahla worries that Yuga may go after him next. Link meets Osfala at the entrance to the Eastern Palace, but Osfala simply laughs off Link's warning about Yuga, telling the young hero that he is just as powerful as the Seven Sages were. He then leaves to confront Yuga. However, after traversing the Eastern Palace, Link runs into Yuga yet again, who turns Osfala into a Painting, just as he did Seres. Link battles Yuga, managing to best him with the help of theBow he rented from Ravio. In a fit of rage, Yuga traps Link as a Painting and leaves. However, Link escapes with the help ofRavio's Bracelet and discovers he could now turn himself into a Painting and back at will with the bracelet.

Meanwhile, having collected the Seven Sages, Yuga quickly takes overHyrule Castle. Link meets Sahasrahla again, who instructs Link to obtain the Pendants of Courage, Wisdom, and Power. Only then will he be able to wield theMaster Sword in order to access the castle. After completing this task, Link obtains the Master Sword and delves into the castle, where he finds Yuga with a Painting of Zelda. Yuga then escapes through a mysterious crack in the wall via his ability to Wall Merge. Link pursues Yuga to the other side, where Yuga has begun the process of reviving the evil Ganon, using the power of the Sages to do so. Once Ganon is resurrected, Yuga merges with him, becoming even more powerful. Link is saved byPrincess Hilda and is told he is in the kingdom ofLorule - a counterpart of his own Hyrule. Link is then given a new task - to rescue and awaken the Seven Sages. Upon awakening all of the Sages, Link is granted the power of theTriforce of Courage. After Hilda's failed attempt to steal the Triforce from him to save her kingdom, Link faces off againstYuga Ganon and defeats him. Afterwards, Link and Zelda are taken to the Lorulean version of theSacred Realm, through which they return home to their own Sacred Realm. There, they find Hyrule's Triforce and wish for the Lorulean Triforce to be restored. After the credits, Link returns the Master Sword to its pedestal.

Tri Force Heroes

File:TFH Link Green.png

InTri Force Heroes, Link passes through the kingdom ofHytopia on his travels after certain, undisclosed events. He is the same hero fromA Link Between Worlds, and dresses differently to hide his heroic origins.[229] While passing through Hytopia, however, he is spotted by anAssistant ofMadame Couture, who recognizes his traits of having pointed ears, long sideburns, and side-parted hair. According to a prophecy in the land, these are the traits characteristic of the fabledTri Force Heroes. Link learns that the kingdom's princess,Styla, has been cursed by awitch to wear an irremovable, tacky outfit. Her father,King Tuft, has sent an urgent request to kingdoms far and wide looking for heroes who match the description of the Tri Force Heroes, hoping that they can save his daughter and put a stop to the witch. Link is drafted into the kingdom's Witch-Hunting Brigade, and is teamed up with two otherLinks as they venture forth into theDrablands, the witch's domain. The other Links are of unclear origin.[230]

Breath of the Wild

Descriptionshide ▲
Slumbering Ruins
The existence of a shrine has been confirmed here at Thyphlo Ruins. Could that darkness act as a test to the one chosen by the sword that seals the darkness? I don't think I can go much farther, however. I wonder if I will have to ask him to come investigate? No, I don't want to have to rely on him for this.
Insurmountable Obstacle
This is a sacred place. Once, Daruk suggested I re-create a ceremony believed to have been held here in the past, the knighting ceremony for the one wielding the sword that seals the darkness. It...did not go well. Urbosa tells me I should look the knight in the eye rather than looking at the sword, but whenever I try, I simply...can't.
The Knight Who Wields the Fated Sword
When I heard Father announce that the knight chosen by the sword that seals the darkness was Link, I felt anything but calm inside. Whenever I hear that name, an anxiousness sets in. Even more challenging are my feelings of envy toward him... I wonder if there will ever be a day when I can look him in the eyes...
A Sword's Protector
The Great Deku Tree watches over the sword that seals the darkness. I also view this tree as a mentor, in a sense. When the knight was chosen to wield the darkness-sealing sword, I felt nearly overcome by my feelings. But the Great Deku Tree offered me words of wisdom in that moment, encouraging me not to give up and that I had my own path to follow. Those words provide comfort to me still.
Horse Charmers
The Highland Stable. This area of vast green lands is home to people skilled in horse handling. Here, horseback archery is a popular pastime. Even Link has admiration for these people's talent in horsemanship.

The events ofBreath of the Wild begin with Link, aKnight of Hyrule, awakening from a deep sleep in theShrine of Resurrection. He is guided by a mysterious voice to take theSheikah Slate and embark to the outside world, told that he must "shine upon Hyrule once again."[231] He then exits the Shrine and is free to explore Hyrule. Outside the Shrine, he finds anOld Man who later informs him that theCalamity Ganon was a source of many evils 100 years ago, until it was sealed in Hyrule Castle, which has been able to contain it for the past century. The Old Man also mentions that the Calamity Ganon is close to breaking free, giving Link the task to save Hyrule.[232]

Link can choose to go to each of the fourAncient Shrines on theGreat Plateau and acquire aRune at each one that will grant him special abilities for the Sheikah Slate.

Link is afflicted by amnesia, as he is unable to remember anyone or anything from prior to his rest in the Shrine of Resurrection.[233]

Link's Father was also a Knight of Hyrule,[159] though his family was not nobility.[234] It is rumored that his hometown may have beenHateno Village, and as he was from the countryside, his promotion to both Champion and the personal bodyguard of the princess made some nobles unhappy.[235] According toMipha's Diary, when Link was only four years old he traveled toZora's Domain with a group of Hylians on order fromKing Rhoam. Even though he was so young, he was already an exceptional swordsman. Mipha describes him as being curious and full of energy at this age, but also reckless.[236] When he was twelve or thirteen years old, Link drew theMaster Sword from itsPedestal, the location of which had long been a mystery.[237]

By the time Link had become a teenager, he was much quieter and outwardly colder than he used to be, though Mipha could tell that inside he was still the same kind person.[238] The reason for Link maintaining silence through much of the game is explained inZelda's Diary, which states that it is because, with so much at stake, he finds it necessary to be strong and silently bear his burdens, which caused him to stop showing outward emotions.[239] After awakening from the Shrine of Resurrection without his memories, Link is much more expressive and lighthearted as he does not remember the burdens and expectations that made him stay silent in the past.[240]

Apparently, he is something of a glutton, and greatly enjoys a good meal.[241]

This incarnation of Link is given the title of "Hero of the Wild".[242]

Tears of the Kingdom

Following the events ofBreath of the Wild, Link andZelda travel throughoutHyrule in their efforts to rebuild after theGreat Calamity. After an unknown length of time, a substance known asGloom begins to seep out from the passagesBeneath Hyrule Castle. After retrieving theMaster Sword fromKorok Forest, Link and Zelda venture underground to investigate the source of the Gloom.[243]

The Awakening

Deep underground, the pair discover ancientZonai ruins containing a mural depicting the events of theImprisoning War.[244] In the room beyond the mural, they discover a mummified body with a disembodiedRight Arm gripping its chest, green energy swirling from it towards the ceiling. As they near the mummified body, the Right Arm falls off it and onto the floor, and theSecret Stone it was wearing lands at Zelda's feet. Zelda picks up the Secret Stone, and the mummified body comes to life and emits a surge of Gloom at her. As Link moves to defend her, his arm and the Master Sword are engulfed in Gloom, decaying both and reducing Link'sHeart Containers andStamina Vessels to their minimums. As Link attempts to deflect another wave of Gloom, the Master Sword's blade is shattered into pieces, one of which scratches the face of their attacker. The mummy then speaks to Link and Zelda, remarking on the fragility of the Master Sword against his power and his disappointment at Link's lacking strength.[245][246] He unleashes a burst of Gloom at the ceiling, causing the floor beneath the three of them to give way. Zelda begins to fall into the pit below, and although Link dives to catch her, he is unable to reach her in time. As she falls, the Secret Stone she picked up begins to glow brightly, and she vanishes in a flash of golden light. Link is then caught by the Right Arm and transported elsewhere by its magic.

The Great Sky Island

Some time later, Link comes to in theRoom of Awakening with hisArmor missing and decayed arm replaced by the Right Arm. As Link gets up, the Right Arm begins to glow, and a disembodied voice speaks to him. The voice explains that it has heard much about Link from Zelda, and that it replaced Link's arm in order to save his life.[247] Link picks up the nowDecayed Master Sword from nearby and exits the Room of Awakening onto theGreat Sky Island, a floating landmass that recently appeared in theSkies above Hyrule. He uses the Right Arm to activate aSteward Construct, who delivers thePurah Pad to him and says that he will find Zelda nearby, within theTemple of Time.[248] Upon reaching the entrance, Link attempts to open the locked door using the Right Arm, but he is denied entry. The disembodied voice then appears to Link, revealing himself as aSpirit namedRauru and the source of Link's new arm.[249] He says that the Right Arm should allow Link to open the door to the Temple of Time, but it needs to be revitalized first. He suggests that Link enter theShrines of Light found on the Great Sky Island to restore the Right Arm with the sacred light found within.[250]

Inside each of the three Shrines, Rauru appears to Link and bestows him with anAncient Power, which Link uses to reach the end of each Shrine and claim theirLights of Blessing. With the abilitiesUltrahand,Fuse, andAscend restored to the Right Arm, Link returns to the Temple of Time and opens the locked door. Inside, he finds and interacts with a spectral image of Zelda's Secret Stone, showing him a vision of Zelda that grants him a fourth Ancient Power:Recall. After the vision ends, Link discovers aGreat Goddess Statue and aChallenge Door at the back of the Temple. He attempts to open the Challenge Door, but he is unable to pass its test in his weakened state. At Rauru's suggestion, Link uses the Purah Pad'sWarping function to return to the Room of Awakening and completes a fourth Shrine of Light.[251] Using the four Lights of Blessing he has obtained, Link prays to the Goddess Statue to receive aHeart Container, enabling him to open the Challenge Door. Beyond the door, Link finds an altar with a glowing ball of light above it. A voice from the Decayed Master Sword speaks to Link, and he places the blade within the ball of light, sending it back in time to Zelda.

To the Kingdom of Hyrule

After the Decayed Master Sword vanishes, theLight Dragon soars through the clouds nearby, parting them and revealing theSurface. LinkSkydives to the land below and makes his way toLookout Landing, where he meets withPurah and recounts to her the events that occurred since he and Zelda ventured underground. She asks him to report toHoz, who is atHyrule Castle leading theSearch for Princess Zelda. When Link reaches Hoz, they see Zelda atop the raised portion of Hyrule Castle, who vanishes in a ball of light. After Link returns to Purah to relay this information, she fills him in on theUpheaval, the series of strange events that began just after Link and Zelda disappeared. She gives Link theParaglider and shows him how to use the Purah Pad'sMapping functionality. Purah then asks him to investigate theRegional Phenomena that have begun across Hyrule, as she suspects that they may find clues to Zelda's whereabouts by doing so.[252]

The Search for Princess Zelda

Link then travels across Hyrule, helping theRito,Gorons,Zora, andGerudo to resolve the strange threats afflicting them. In the course of doing so, he helps to awaken theSages ofWind,Fire,Water, andLightning, and he discovers that Zelda appears to be in the ancient past.[253] Throughout his travels, he also meets withImpa, and at her direction seeks out theGeoglyphs. At each one, he finds aDragon's Tear and watches theMemory within, learning about Zelda's experiences in theEra of Foundation.

Crisis at Hyrule Castle

Once the four Regional Phenomena have been undone, Link returns to Lookout Landing to report to Purah. When he arrives, he and Purah see Zelda in distress up on the raised portion of Hyrule Castle. Purah asks Link to go to Hyrule Castle and figure out what may be happening to her.[254][255] There, Link discovers that the Zelda that has been seen across Hyrule since the Upheaval is actuallyPhantom Ganon in disguise, sent by the mummy that he and Zelda found underground.[256] After Link defeats Phantom Ganon, the four Sages arrive to support him, and the mummy reveals himself to beDemon King Ganondorf.[257] After he vanishes, the group returns to Lookout Landing to prepare to face Ganondorf. With Purah's help, they decide that they need to search ancient ruins for clues to the location of theSage of Spirit.[258]

The Fifth Sage

Inside theFloating Ring Ruin atKakariko Village, Link finds aStone Slab indicating that the key to finding the SageMineru may be found in theZonai Ruins inFaron. With theZonai Survey Team's assistance, Link performs a ceremony at the ruins that clears the thick fog obscuring theThunderhead Isles.[259] While exploring the island chain, Link finds aZonai Relic, and he hears Mineru's voice asking him to follow the light that it creates.[260] Link brings the Zonai Relic throughTobio's Hollow Chasm and places it into a mold in theConstruct Factory. Mineru then asks for Link's help to assemble a body for her. After Link finishes assemblingMineru's Construct, the two travel south to theSpirit Temple and recover herSecret Stone of Spirit, allowing Mineru to join Link as theSage of Spirit. Mineru then tells Link to seek the advice of theGreat Deku Tree, as Zelda had set in motion a plan to restore the Master Sword and deliver it to Link in the present.[261]

Recovering the Hero's Sword

Returning to Lookout Landing, Link gives Purah an update on his hunt for the fifth Sage, and she tells him that the Great Deku Tree can be found within theGreat Hyrule Forest. However, when Link attempts to travel through theLost Woods, he is blocked by an unusual fog that even theKoroks cannot pass through.[262] Instead, Link travels to theKorok Grove in theGreat Hyrule Forest Depths and uses anAscend Access Point to reach theKorok Forest, where the Koroks appear frozen in place and the Great Deku Tree is sickened by Gloom. Entering theDeku Tree Chasm within theGreat Deku Tree's Navel, Link encounters aGloom Spawn andPhantom Ganon. Upon their defeat, the Gloom afflicting the Great Deku Tree vanishes and the Koroks are restored to life. By speaking to the Great Deku Tree, Link can obtain the exact location of the Master Sword, but it appears to be moving through the Sky. As he nears it, Link finds that the blade is embedded in the head of the Light Dragon, restored and infused with the power to face the Demon King. Upon drawing the blade, he learns that Zelda sacrificed herself and underwent draconification to allow herself the time to infuse the Master Sword with her power.

Locating the Demon King

Having completed all the necessary preparations, Link returns to Purah once more. Expecting the Demon King to be somewhere within Hyrule's Depths, she recommends that Link speak with her Head of Depths Research,Josha.[263] Following her advice, Link travels to theGreat Abandoned Central Mine in his search for clues. There, he finds and defeatsMaster Kohga, beginning theSide AdventureMaster Kohga of the Yiga Clan. Throughout this Side Adventure, Link tracks down Master Kohga at severalAbandoned Mines across the Depths. At theAbandoned Hebra Mine, Master Kohga reveals that the Demon King's lair is hidden in the Depths below Hyrule Castle.[264] After dispatching Kohga for the final time, Link returns to Lookout Landing, where Purah tells him that the only thing left to do is confront Ganondorf.[265]

Confronting the Demon King

At the bottom of theHyrule Castle Chasm, Link finds himself inGloom's Approach, an array of tunnels now infested with Ganondorf'sMonsters. Within these passageways, he loses contact with the Sages,[266] and he shortly thereafter makes his way through theForgotten Foundation andImprisoning Chamber. Descending further still, he arrives atGloom's Lair, where he is ambushed by theDemon King's Army. As they attempt to attack him, the Sages arrive to support him, and the group battles through the waves of Monsters together. After the Army is defeated, a large wall of Gloom collapses, revealing the path toGloom's Origin. Then, aColgera,Marbled Gohma,Mucktorok,Queen Gibdo, andSeized Construct appear. The Sages tell Link to press onwards while they deal with the new foes.[267] In Gloom's Origin, Link finally comes face-to-face with Ganondorf.

The Final Battle

As Link enters the room, Ganondorf delivers a monologue about his ambitions of bringing darkness across Hyrule, restoring his body to its former glory as he does so.[268] Once he finishes, Link draws the Master Sword with a flourish, and the two begin their duel. They trade blows back and forth until Ganondorf is weakened enough that he unleashes the power of his Secret Stone, entering his second form and creating several Phantom Ganons to assist him in the fight. As he and Link resume their combat, the Sages arrive to support Link. After Ganondorf has again been weakened, he dispels the Phantom Ganons and unleashes a blast of energy, knocking the Sages out of commission. He then taunts Link, and they begin the final phase of the battle. Once Link finally dispatches Ganondorf, he gives in to his hated and decides to do whatever it takes to destroy Link.[269] He then swallows his Secret Stone and undergoes draconification, grabbing Link in his mouth and flying up to the Sky.

High in theCentral Hyrule Sky, the transformation completes and Ganondorf fully becomes theDemon Dragon. As Link struggles in the Demon Dragon's maw, the Light Dragon swoops in to defend Link, causing the Demon Dragon to drop Link. The Light Dragon flies down to catch him, and the two face the Demon Dragon together. With the Light Dragon's help, Link repeatedly lands on the Demon Dragon to strike at its weak points. After the last weak point is destroyed, the Secret Stone appears on the Demon Dragon's forehead. Link dives down, opens a crack in the Secret Stone, and stabs the Master Sword directly into it. Link and the Light Dragon then watch as the Demon Dragon is consumed in a massive explosion.

Final Catch and Epilogue

Link then finds himself floating in an ethereal skyscape with the Light Dragon below him. The Spirits of Rauru andSonia appear next to him and begin to channel their power through the Right Arm at the Light Dragon, undoing Zelda's draconification and restoring Link'sHylian arm.[270] Link then awakes, finding himself falling back down to the Surface with Zelda a short distance below him, unconscious. HeDives down to her, grabs her hand, and shelters her as they land in the lake onMabe Prairie. Link carries Zelda to the shore, where she awakes and realizes that everything is over.[271]

Some time later, Link, Zelda, Purah, and the Sages travel up to the Temple of Time on the Great Sky Island, where they say goodbye to Mineru as she moves on.[272]

Echoes of Wisdom

InEchoes of Wisdom, Link is fromSuthorn Village in southernHyrule. When he was a child, he and several other children from Suthorn Village were pulled into aRift. While they were able to return, Link and the other children lost their ability to speak.[273] Unlike all the other children who had returned, Link kept his memories of what happened inside theStill World. From his experience Link gained the ability to sense when new Rifts opened, which he used to fight offMonsters that would appear from them and help people who would be taken by the Rifts. Link fought with the hope that in doing so he might eventually regain the ability to speak.[274]

Link saved aSheikah man namedLueburry from Monsters inSuthorn Forest, and after hearing his story, Lueburry entrusted Link with theSword of Might that he had created usingMight Crystals from the Still World.[275] Lueburry also gave Link the blue hood and cloak that he wears.[276] When Link set off to defeatGanon in theSuthorn Ruins, Lueburry provided him with theBow of Might andBombs of Might as well.[277]

At the beginning ofEchoes of Wisdom, Link faces off against Ganon. At first he seems to be victorious, but then Ganon'sTrident creates a Rift that pulls him into the Still World. Before being completely engulfed, he shoots anArrow at theCrystal thatZelda is trapped in, ultimately enabling her to escape.

After fleeing fromHyrule Castle, Zelda comes across Link's hometown, Suthorn Village. One of the villagers laments that he is not around to help them with the recent trouble.[278] Inside the Suthorn Ruins, anEcho of Link appears as aSub-Boss. This Link carries the Sword of Might and theHylian Shield. His Hylian Shield can be pulled away and destroyed withTri'sBind ability. Echoes of Link also appear as Sub-Bosses in theGerudo Sanctum and theEldin Temple, where they wield the Bow of Might and Bombs of Might, respectively.

Link and Zelda are briefly reunited after Zelda defeats Ganon, but he is soon attacked byNull and trapped within a Crystal.

When an Echo of Zelda created by Null attempts to obtain theTriforce, it splits into three pieces. One piece goes into the Still World, where it goes to Link. The real Zelda reunites with Link in theStilled Ancient Ruins. She returns Link's Sword, Bombs, and Bow to him, and the two enterNull's Body together. At the end of theDungeon, they fight Null together and retrieve the final piece of the Triforce from it. After Zelda and Link return from defeating Null, Link is shown speaking to theKing of Hyrule, indicating that with Null's defeat Link regained his ability to talk.

Abilities

Link is depicted throughout the series as an impressive swordsman. He usually begins his adventure as an average boy with little to no swordsmanship skills. When trouble arises, however, Link demonstrates a natural aptitude for the ways of the sword and is able to best his enemies easily: inThe Wind Waker, Link goes toOrca to learn how to wield a sword in order to help Tetra from theForest of Fairies.[279] It is further noted by Orca himself that Link's ability to use a sword is firmly present in his veins.[280] As the game progresses, Link becomes known for his swordsmanship as well as his ability to quickly adapt to a wide variety of items and skillfully wield them, such as theBoomerang, theBow, and theGrappling Hook, among others.

In some games, Link can learn advanced sword techniques and complicated move-sets: inThe Minish Cap, theBlade Brothers teach the young hero various sword skills by usingTiger Scrolls, and inTwilight Princess, theHero's Spirit shares his knowledge of the sword by teaching Link sevenHidden Skills to help him become more powerful and save Hyrule.

Additionally, Link is portrayed as having an excellent physical condition, performing backflips easily as well as being able to best others in sumo-wrestling, as seen inTwilight Princess. However, despite this, Link is usually defenseless without a sword or an item. This is depicted inThe Wind Waker, where Link loses his sword after being launched into theForsaken Fortress and must use his stealth abilities to get it back: if he is spotted by an enemy, he quickly surrenders due to his inability to fight back.[281] Although in some games Link is easily able to pick up large stones or push blocks many times his size, other games require him to use special bracelets or gauntlets to further increase his strength, such as the Power Bracelet or theTitan's Mitt.

As seen inThe Adventure of Link,A Link to the Past, andOcarina of Time, Link is capable of using magic spells such asDin's Fire provided that he possesses aMagic Meter, which is usually granted to him by aGreat Fairy.

Link is also talented in playing a wide variety of instruments. This is first shown in the originalThe Legend of Zelda, in which the young hero plays theRecorder to open up secret entrances or transport him to various parts in the overworld. Since then, Link has competently played other instruments such as theOcarina, apan flute, aguitar, thedrums, and aHarp, all of which play a major role in each of the respective games in which they appear. Not only is Link a proficient instrument player: he is also adept in using aconductor's baton to conduct other players.

After receivingRauru's arm inTears of the Kingdom, Link gains the ability to use the mysterious powers of the Zonai, such as Ultrahand and Recall.

Other Appearances

Main article:Link/Other Appearances

Link is also featured in other media, including comics and mangas based on the games, animated shows, and theSuper Smash Bros. series. Unlike the games in the main series, Link has actual dialogue in many of these appearances instead of being a silent hero.

Link has also made severalcameo appearances in various games and other media.

Other Heroes of Hyrule

Besides the iterations of Link that appear in the games, the backstory to some of the games feature additional unnamed heroes of Hyrule who have a similar appearance to Link.

Goddess's Hero

Main article:Hylia's Chosen Hero

InSkyward Sword, it mentions that there was another hero a long time ago, who wasHylia's chosen hero. It is only known that Her Grace gave theSailcloth to her chosen hero long ago.[282]

Hero from the Minish Legend

Main article:Hero of Men

The back story ofThe Minish Cap, tells of theMinish Legend. In the Minish Legend, theHero of Men, a hero clad in green clothes but lacking Link's traditional green hat, arose to fight the demons attacking the world. This Minish Legend is depicted in a series of stained glass windows beneath theElemental Sanctuary. One of the stained glass windows depicts the Hero of Men receiving thePicori Blade and theLight Force from theMinish, while in the other, it shows the hero confronting the monsters that were attacking Hyrule.

Hero of the Four Sword

Main article:Hero of the Four Sword

The back story ofFour Swords describes how prior to the events of the game, Vaati attacked Hyrule kidnapping young girls. The knights of Hyrule fought bravely against Vaati, but could not defeat him. A lone traveling boy appeared wielding theFour Sword. The boy's sword split his body into four and they defeated Vaati and sealed him away into the Four Sword. After defeating Vaati, the boy vanished into the forest, leaving behind his sword. The people of Hyrule built theFour Sword Sanctuary protect the Four Sword and its seal on Vaati.

According toHyrule Historia, this hero is known as the Hero of the Four Sword and is not the same hero who appears inThe Minish Cap orFour Swords, but is another hero who appears in between the two games.Hyrule Historia describes him as someone about whom little is known, but he is possibly a descendant of the hero who previously defeated Vaati inThe Minish Cap.[18]

Ancient Hero

Main article:Ancient Hero

10,000 years before the events ofBreath of the Wild, an Ancient Hero fought alongside the Princess, the fourDivine Beasts and numerousGuardians to sealCalamity Ganon away beneath Hyrule Castle.[citation needed]

Hero of Light

The following section is not part of the Zelda canon and should not be taken as such.

InAncient Stone Tablets, one of two originalLegend of Zelda games made for theSatellaview, theavatar characters ofBS-X: The Town Whose Name Was Stolen replace Link as the central heroes, who could be male or female depending on the player's settings, and become known as theHero of Light. Six years after the events ofA Link to the Past and during Link's absence, Hyrule's long peace comes to a sudden end as Princess Zelda suffers from reoccurring dreams of evil to come. She andAginah then witness a flash of light in the forest and upon arriving to investigate, find an unconscious youth and bring them to rest at Sahasrahla's old hideaway. Zelda senses that the youth may be endowed with the power of courage, and believes that they may be the Hero of Light.

The young hero was then given the task to locate several stone tablets and eventually learns that though Link had defeated Ganon previously in the last game, his spirit had lived on through his malice. Ganon had learned of and coveted the power of the Hero of Light, and had subsequently managed to summon the hero into Hyrule, hoping to obtain the hero's power to be fully reborn. Once Ganon was defeated, the Hero of Light returned the Master Sword they had used to its pedestal and returned to where they had come from in a flash of light.

Age

During an Iwata Asks forOcarina of Time 3D, Shigeru Miyamoto stated that Link is about 12 inThe Legend of Zelda;[283] however, according toHyrule Historia, Link is 10.[175] As stated inThe Official Nintendo Player's Guide,[284]Hyrule Historia,[175] and by Shigeru Miyamoto during the Iwata Asks forOcarina of Time 3D,[283] Link is 16 inThe Adventure of Link.

In the same Iwata Asks, Miyamoto stated that inOcarina of Time, Link is 9 as a child and 16 as an adult;[285] however,The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time—Official Nintendo Player's Guide byNintendo Power states that he is 10 as a child.[286] According to theOcarina of Time Linkamiibo description, he is 17 as an adult.[287]

At the start ofThe Wind Waker, Link is given theHero's Clothes to wear on his birthday, which are to be worn by the boys ofOutset Island upon reaching the same age as the Hero of Time when he set out on his journey.[288] Taking into account the age of the Hero of Time revealed in the Iwata Asks interview, the Hero of Winds would be around 9 years old when he sets out on his journey; however,The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker—The Official Nintendo Player's Guide byNintendo Power,[289]Zelda Box,[290]Encyclopedia,[291] the Toon LinkTrophy inSuper Smash Bros. Brawl,[292] the description for the Toon Link amiibo,[293] andNintendo Today! all state he is 12 years old.[294]

In an interview with Club Nintendo in 2005,Eiji Aonuma stated that Link is 17 years old inTwilight Princess;[295] however, in an interview with Nintendo Dream the following year, Aonuma said Link is 16 years old.[296]The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess—PRIMA Official Game Guide byPrima Games and Enterplay'sTrading Card for Link both refer to him as 17 years old.[297][298]

According toHyrule Historia, Link fromSkyward Sword is 17 and a half years old.[299]

Due to theSlumber of Restoration, Link is chronologically over 100 years old inBreath of the Wild, although the Slumber appears to have allowed him to retain a young biological age - in fact, he is refused service atthe Noble Canteen inGerudo Town because of this.[300] He is however allowed to climbMount Lanayru, which requires one to be at least 17 years old to climb.

Trivia

  • Shigeru Miyamoto has said that Link's green tunic and hat were inspired byDisney's version ofPeter Pan.[301]
  • InThe Adventure of Link, Link appears to speak when he finds theMirror inSaria Town, saying "I found a mirror under the table." Link also appears to speak while inspecting the fireplace in the town ofKasuto, saying "Looks like I can get in the fireplace." InBreath of the Wild, he speaks when examining the cooked fish around theCampfire inLurelin Village, commenting, "These grilled fish look really good. I wonder if they were caught locally...". This also occurs when he looks atPaya's diary, saying, "Must bePaya's diary. Must not look... Must not look... Must not look...". Furthermore, in the Japanese version ofBreath of the Wild, the Adventure Log is written entirely from Link's perspective.
  • InA Link to the Past,Link's Awakening,Oracle of Ages,Oracle of Seasons,The Minish Cap or any other sprite-based game of the series when Link faces east, he swings hisSword as if he was right-handed, due to Link's sprite being flipped horizontally; this also happens when Link performs aSpin Attack while facing east, spinning the opposite direction to what he normally would.
  • InA Link to the Past, for unknown reasons, Link's hair appears as pink; in official art for the game, it is a light brown.
  • Link's adult height inOcarina of Time is 160.56cm, according to both theLakeside Laboratory meter stick and the internal developer measurement units, which are described in multiple distinct metrics.[302]
  • Early screenshots ofMajora's Mask show Link with an item resembling aMask of his adult face. This has led many to believe that an adult version of Link was originally planned to be in the game; however, theMask is not present in the final version and was likely replaced by theFierce Deity's Mask. Concept art for an adult Link also appears in theHyrule Historia book, with the explanation that his inclusion may have been a prototype for the Fierce Deity form.Fierce Deity Link's model and animations are based on Link wieldingBiggoron's Sword as an adult inOcarina of Time.
  • In the German and Italian versions ofThe Minish Cap, Smith is Link's uncle rather than his grandfather.[citation needed]
  • Since theHero's Spirit inTwilight Princess is theHero of Time, this makesTwilight Princess the first game to feature a Link having proper conversations on his own as opposed to simple responses chosen by the player or utterances during gameplay, as well as having two Links meet in canon content that are of different eras.[158]
    • The second instance of the latter is when Link fromBreath of the Wild can summon the hero fromTwilight Princess in wolf form to aid him on his adventure.
  • The Links featured inSkyward Sword andBreath of the Wild are the only Links that are right-handed.
    • Link also appears as right-handed in the Wii version ofTwilight Princess, inOcarina of Time 3D'sMaster Quest, and inHero Mode inTwilight Princess HD.
    • While the Link fromSkyward Sword is right-handed, his appearance inMario Kart 8 is shown as left-handed, as he holds theMaster Sword with his left hand when doing a trick. The same goes forBreath of the Wild Link.
  • Though most characters in the series named Link are the protagonist, there are a few exceptions. Such asSera's pet Cat fromTwilight Princess,Abe and Rose's pet Pig inThe Wind Waker andGorons named Link inOcarina of Time andMajora's Mask.
  • Hyrule Historia suggests the possibility that each "Link" may have all had different names, a reference to how Link can be named anything in the games.[303]
    • The exception to this isBreath of the Wild's Link, who is explicitly named as such and whose name can not be customized by the player.
  • Alife-sized statue of Link based onofficialTears of the Kingdom artwork was displayed atNintendo Live 2022.

Nomenclature

According toShigeru Miyamoto, Link's name comes from the fact that, during development ofThe Legend of Zelda, he was the link between the past and the future, which was the original setting for the game.[304] Miyamoto has also stated that Link is named after the fact that he connects people together.[305]

According toEiji Aonuma, Link is named after that fact that he links the player to the game.[306]

  232. The words of guidance you have been hearing since you awakened are from Princess Zelda herself. Even now, as she works to restrain Ganon from within Hyrule Castle, she calls out for your help. However, my daughter's power will soon be exhausted. Once that happens, Ganon will freely regenerate himself and nothing will stop him from consuming our land. Considering that I could no save my own kingdom, I have no right to ask this of you, Link... But I am powerless here... You must save her...my daughter. And do whatever it takes to annihilate Ganon. — King Rhoam (Breath of the Wild)
  233. I see... So you have lost your memory. — Impa (Breath of the Wild)
  234. But the princess herself only had eyes for her escort, her own knight attendant. My teacher was consumed with jealousy... He fumed that the knight was neither nobility nor royalty himself. — Kass (Breath of the Wild)
  235. Creating a Champion, Dark Horse Books, pg. 376
  236. At the request of Hyrule's king, a group of outsiders came to greet us at the domain. One of them was a Hylian child of only about four years of age. His name was Link. He made quite a first impression. He was curious and full of energy, with a ready smile. Are all Hylian children that way? One thing that surely sets him apart is his swordsmanship, which I hear is exceptional. He has even bested adults. He must be somewhat reckless, however, as he was covered in bruises. — Mipha's Diary (Breath of the Wild)
  237. It is said that the legendary Master Sword can only be wielded by a hero chosen by the sword itself, and its whereabouts had long been a mystery. The details of how Link obtained the sword a hundred years ago have been lost to the mists of time, but since he was in possession of it for a number of years prior to becoming a Champion, he was likely around twelve or thirteen years old when it happened. (Creating a Champion, Dark Horse Books, pg. 376)
  238. He hardly speaks anymore, and smiles even more rarely. He is still the kind soul I knew, but something has changed. — Mipha's Diary (Breath of the Wild)
  239. When I finally got around to asking why he's so quiet all the time, I could tell it was difficult for him to say. But he did. With so much at stake, and so many eyes upon him, he feels it necessary to stay strong and to silently bear any burden. A feeling I know all too well... For him, it has caused him to stop outwardly expressing his thoughts and feelings. — Zelda's Diary (Breath of the Wild)
  240. Creating a Champion, Dark Horse Books, pg. 65
  241. Bit by bit, I've gotten Link to open up to me. It turns out he's quite a glutton. He can't resist a delicious meal! — Zelda's Diary (Breath of the Wild)
  242. "Well, this Link is technically a different person from the Link you fought before. This incarnation is known as the Hero of the Wild." — Palutena (Super Smash Bros. Ultimate)
  243. People have been falling ill after coming into contact with the gloom drifting through these caverns.

Though here it seems almost misty and not concentrated enough to harm us...

We'll keep going. With it coming up from beneath Hyrule Castle...

We do not know what waits below, so we need to be ready for anything. But I know I'll be OK with you, Link.

    Let's go solve this mystery.
    — Princess Zelda (Tears of the Kingdom)
  244. Incredible!

This mural must be the great war recorded in the royal histories!

This is the Imprisoning War and the events that led up to it!

Link! This is a huge discovery!
    — Princess Zelda (Tears of the Kingdom)
  245. Was that the sword that seals the darkness? A blade that shatters so easily against my power cannot save you from me. — Ganondorf (Tears of the Kingdom)
  246. You, who carries that fragile sword... are Link.

Rauru placed his faith in you...

and that was all you could do?
    — Ganondorf (Tears of the Kingdom)
  247. Ah, Link. Finally, you wake.

I've heard a great deal about you from Zelda.

Your wounds were severe... I am relieved to see you escape death.

Your arm, however, was beyond saving. I had to replace it, lest the injury endanger you further.
    — Rauru (Tears of the Kingdom)
  248. Link. I have waited for you.Princess Zelda left something for you in my care.

This is thePurah Pad. I am told it is an invaluable tool that will provide you with direction.

I received it from Princess Zelda. I have now passed it on to you.

My records indicate that Princess Zelda is waiting at the location marked on itsmap.
    — Steward Construct (Tears of the Kingdom)
  249. That door will open only to those with sufficient power...

I'm sorry—I did not intend to startle you.

It was I that spoke to you earlier. That arm originally belonged to me. I am Rauru.
    — Rauru (Tears of the Kingdom)
  250. In any case, that arm should allow you to open this door.

It seems to have lost the power to do so. You might be able to restore it, but you would need to enter a place filled with sacred light...

Ah, of course. Why not visit the shrines on this island?
    — Rauru (Tears of the Kingdom)
  251. Use the travel function to reach that area quickly. You'll find the last of this island's shrines around there somewhere. — Rauru (Tears of the Kingdom)
  252. I can't say for certain, but...

I've got the nagging suspicion that we mightfind out more about Princess Zelda by looking into these phenomena.
    — Purah (Tears of the Kingdom)
  253. Hey, Link? That woman in the vision my ancestor showed us...didn't she look just like Princess Zelda to you? — Tulin (Tears of the Kingdom)
  254. I'm feeling uneasy about all of this. Why did the princess appear so suddenly, and right now specifically? If she'd been in the castle the whole time, then why didn't she come out sooner?

I can't make sense of it. Suppose I'll have to wait until I can ask her myself.
    — Purah (Tears of the Kingdom)
  255. The soldiers and I can't make our way over there, no matter how we slice this.

If you do this, I'm sure you cancome up with something using your abilities.
    — Purah (Tears of the Kingdom)
  256. Did my puppet entertain you? She made it so easy to mislead you—to keep you occupied... — Ganondorf (Tears of the Kingdom)
  257. You do not recognize me... Perhaps there are limits to the knowledge the secret stones impart.

    You stand before Ganondorf.
    — Ganondorf (Tears of the Kingdom)
  258. So King Rauru and the six sages fought the Demon King in the Imprisoning War.

Princess Zelda was one of those people—the Sage of Time.

There are the five sages we know of—wind, fire, water, lightning, and time. That leavesone more... There must be a clue to all of this somewhere.

I think it's worth revisitingthe ruins from the age of legends to see what we can find.
    — Purah (Tears of the Kingdom)
  259. But that still leaves us with the other part—"Offer a Zonai charge to the altar at the tail."What is a Zonai charge? And this altar at the tail... Where do we start looking for it? Could another tall dragon pillar be marking the altar site, just like the others you've found? — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
  260. Link... Zelda's chosen protector...

    Take this. Follow the light.
    — Mineru (Tears of the Kingdom)
  261. The sword that seals the darkness—the Master Sword—is our strongest weapon in the campaign against the Demon King. Zelda vowed to restore the blade. I have no doubt that it is somewhere in Hyrule. Seek the sacred tree of this era, which you know as the Deku Tree. Zelda intended for you to meet with him when you were ready to reclaim the Master Sword. — Mineru (Tears of the Kingdom)
  262. No matter which way I enter the Lost Woods, the fog comes and gets me, and then I'm right back at the beginning... It's covering the entire woods, so there's no way to go without the fog getting me...

I can't return to Korok Forest like this. I want to go home...

I did hear that a big hole opened up inMinshi Woods. I wonder if my friends who went to check it out are OK...
    — Peeks (Tears of the Kingdom)
  263. Sorry. Let me gather my thoughts here.

I can't think of anywhere on the surface he might be, but the Depths...that seems likely. Although we can't be too certain...

I'll leave it to you to head up the search.

That said, if you're investigating the Depths, ask Josha for help.

I'm sure she'll have useful information for you.
    — Purah (Tears of the Kingdom)
  264. Yes, where the end of all things will begin! In thedeepest reaches of the Depths... Far beneath Hyrule Castle! — Master Kohga (Tears of the Kingdom)
  265. With this, preparations are complete. Now our target is thedeepest reaches of the Depths—beneathHyrule Castle! — Purah (Tears of the Kingdom)
  266. The power of a sage cannot reach you. — N/A (Tears of the Kingdom)
  267. We are fated to fight these beasts!

    Don't worry about us!

Link! We'll take care of this, goro!

You ready to see the power of a sage?!

We'll be fine! We already beat them once!

This'll be a breeze for sure!

    It is time, Link.

The rest is up to you!
    The Sages (TotK)
  268. How disappointing...

This world should be shrouded in darkness, not bathed in insufferable light.

All these weak, peace-loving cowards running rampant...

It would have been more...satisfying to overcome a worthy foe.

Regardless... I will reshape this world as it was meant to be.

I will crush any opposition. I will rule.

That is what a king must do.

    Do not look away.

    You witness a king's revival.

And the birth of his new world!
    — Ganondorf (Tears of the Kingdom)
  269. My body... My mind... Everything!

I'll sacrifice it all to destroy you...

and cast this world into eternal night!
    — Ganondorf (Tears of the Kingdom)
  270. This is only a theory, but...

Rauru's power of light and Sonia's time power...

For Zelda to transform back, they both must have channeled their abilities through you, Link.
    — Mineru (Tears of the Kingdom)
  271. He's gone... The Demon King...

I'm not in a dream, right?

    You did it.

Oh, Link, you really did it!
    — Princess Zelda (Tears of the Kingdom)
  272. I know I can move on—join Rauru and the others—and the world will be safe. — Mineru (Tears of the Kingdom)
  273. All of the kids who were taken by rifts have lost something. For Link, he lost the ability to speak. — Lueburry's Diary (Echoes of Wisdom)
  274. While he did lose the ability to speak, he's the only one who recalled being stolen away. On top of that, he gained a special ability to sense when new rifts would appear. So he started using his uncanny ability to head monsters off whenever a new rift would crop up. And he'd also do what he could to prevent others from being taken into rifts. I bet he thinks if he keeps fighting, he might eventually be able to speak again. — Lueburry (Echoes of Wisdom)
  275. Then it hit me! This young man would be the best person to entrust the Sword of Might to! — Lueburry's Diary (Echoes of Wisdom)
  276. Link stopped by on his way home from his travels. He likes the hood I gave him the other day. — Lueburry's Diary (Echoes of Wisdom)
  277. The Sword of Might has been forged as best as I am able. I gave him some other weapons too. — Lueburry's Diary (Echoes of Wisdom)
  278. Link is a young fellow from this village. He's better with a sword than anyone! — Jacint (Echoes of Wisdom)
  279. Oh! What is the matter, Link? You have an urgent look about you... Has something happened? Whatever it is, from the look on your face I suspect it is no laughing matter... What say you, Link? Do you wish to practice your skills with the sword? — Orca (The Wind Waker)
  280. You still have much to learn, but the skill to become a master is in your veins. Do not neglect your practice! — Orca (The Wind Waker)
  281. Listen up, Link... There's a monster running the searchlight up there! If you can slay the monster, then just maybe it'll shut the searchlight down. Oh...but you're unarmed, aren't you? All you have is a shield... — Tetra (The Wind Waker)
  282. You know, they say that the goddess gave the Sailcloth to her chosen hero long ago. — Zelda (Skyward Sword)
  283. 283.0283.1"Link is a boy. In the first game, The Legend of Zelda, he was about 12 years old. In Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, he was about 16, but I never wanted to make him just another cool hero." —Shigeru Miyamoto (Iwata Asks.)

  285. "Yes. When we decided to handle Link growing up from a 9-year-old child to a more mature 16-year-old, I wanted lots of characters to fulfill various roles. For example, Kaepora Gaebora is a grandfather figure who gives Link all kinds of advice and looks out for him. And since Link is a boy, I wanted girls besides Princess Zelda to show up." —Shigeru Miyamoto (Iwata Asks.)

  288. Time certainly flies... I can't believe you're already old enough to wear these clothes. Don't look so disappointed, dear one! Just try them on. Today is a day to celebrate! It is the day that you become the same age as the young hero spoken of in all the legends. You only have to wear them for one day, so don't look so down. Be proud, child! — Grandma (The Wind Waker)

Il devait s'agir d'un jeu vidéo qui se passerait à la fois dans le passé et le futur.
