Hyrule Field is the central region of Hyrule that leads to many of the prominent locations of the kingdom and beyond. As such, it is typically a major area that the hero must traverse repeatedly throughout the course of the game.
Features and Overview
Ocarina of Time
Hyrule Field is a large round area that acts as the hub or crossroads of Hyrule inOcarina of Time. All other areas of the game branch out from this region. However, there is little activity, and besides a few side-quests, it serves little purpose other than maintaining the illusion of a vast land.
Located in the center of Hyrule Field isLon-Lon Ranch, and all other areas dwell on its outskirts. At the northmost section of the field restsHyrule Castle Town, the main center of activity of Hyrule which also serves as the location ofHyrule Castle. To the northeast isKakariko Village, the primary settlement forHyruleans, and just north of the village isDeath Mountain.Zora's River and ultimatelyZora's Domain reside in the east, while theKokiri Forest is situated in the southeast. Directly to the west of Kokiri Forest isLake Hylia, a deep, pure lake that is home to theWater Temple.[9] Lastly,Gerudo Valley is located to the west, where one the other side of the valley the gang of female thieves have established their hideout, theGerudo's Fortress.[10]
All of the waterflow in Hyrule is a direct source from the waters inZora's Fountain, located in the northeast. This water flows throughZora's River and makes its way past Castle Town, continuing its path through the bottom of Gerudo Valley and eventually reaching its final destination: Lake Hylia.[11]
As young Link,Stalchildren burrow out of the ground during the nighttime and attack the young hero. They can be avoided by sticking to the dirt road or by wearing theBunny Hood.Peahats can also be found in the southern and northern corners of the field, and will attack anyone who gets too close to their territory during the day; however, if Link attacks the Peahats during the night, they will send outPeahat Larva to chase after him. Once Link turns into an adult by retrieving theMaster Sword from itsPedestal, the Stalchildren and the Peahats will disappear; instead,Big Poes as well as ordinaryPoes will roam the field, although they will only appear at certain spots.
Areas
The Minish Cap
InThe Minish Cap, Hyrule Field is divided into two parts on the map: North Hyrule Field and South Hyrule Field, withHyrule Town between the two locations. Other places linking to the two parts of Hyrule Field includeHyrule Castle,Lon Lon Ranch,Trilby Highlands, theEastern Hills, and theWestern Wood.
Areas
Twilight Princess

InTwilight Princess, Hyrule Field is almost five times larger than inOcarina of Time and spans three Provinces:Lanayru,Eldin, andFaron. It sports more landscape variety than its previous incarnation, including bridges, rocky cliffs, woods, and ancient ruins, and unlikeOcarina of Time, Hyrule Field inTwilight Princess is not one huge area, but several areas connected by pathways. Due to its immense size, it is easier to traverse the field with either the help ofEpona or bywarping through aPortal.
Hyrule Field surroundsHyrule Castle and is full of shortcuts and entrances to many other areas, including:
- Faron Woods in the south
- Kakariko Village andKakariko Gorge in theeastGCN version; west in the Wii version
- Zora's Domain in the north
- Lake Hylia in thewestGCN version; east in the Wii version
- Hyrule Castle Town in the center
Various enemies roam the field, includingBokoblins,Bulblins,Deku Babas,Bomskits,Guays,Leevers,Poes,Stalhounds (at night),Kargaroks,Tektites,Helmasaurs,Lizalfos,Chuchus, andBullbos.
Several important game events occur in the field. AfterColin gets kidnapped byKing Bulblin, Link follows him to theeastGCN version; west in the Wii version portion of Hyrule Field, where the young hero defeats King Bulblin at theBridge of Eldin. Link must once again journey through Hyrule Field asTelma,Ilia andRalis are riding in a caravan on their way to Kakariko Village from the Hyrule Castle Town while the young hero defends Telma's caravan from enemy attacks during the ride. The last event is the final two fights againstGanondorf which take place onEastGCN version; West in the Wii version Hyrule Field.
When riding Epona through Hyrule Field, a remixed version of the theme music is played, which adds brass instruments to the melody.
Breath of the Wild
Unlike in previousZelda games, Hyrule Field inBreath of the Wild is completely open; all parts of the overworld are accessible with no interruptions, whereas in previous games, different parts of the overworld were separated by loading screens. There are also enemies roaming the field such as the one shown in the game's reveal trailer.[12]Central Hyrule houses Hyrule Field's location in the game.

A pair of Soldiers can be found on a small plateau to the north ofSuthorn Prairie, where they discuss their feelings about having to capturePrincess Zelda under suspicion of creating theRifts that plagueHyrule.[13][14] They decide to search in Hyrule Field as they finished putting wantedPosters in the west and found no results inSeesyde Village to the east.[13][15] There is aSign in the southern wooded area warning ofWolfos.[16]
To the north of Hyrule Field sits theCarrot Patch,Northern Sanctuary, and the entrances toHebra Mountain and theEternal Forest. The entrance to Hebra Mountain, theHebra Mountain Passage, is initially blocked by aCracked Wall. ABusiness Scrub operates aSmoothie Shop along the road west of the Northern Sanctuary. East of the Sanctuary is a nameless lake which feeds the rivers surrounding Hyrule Castle Town and leading into Lake Hylia to the south. Its easternmost stretches that contain theEastern Ruins are regarded as a separate region, known asEastern Hyrule Field.
ARed Rupee can be found atop one of the rock formations east ofHyrule Castle Town.
