Themes and Navigation

The Eastern Temple is the thirdStage inEastern Hyrule. It is explored after dealing with the issues that had befallen the neighboring town, theVillage of the Blue Maiden, and the far sea atThe Coast.

This Temple is a sinister shrine filled with clever traps, feisty enemies, and a gigantic boss, theStone Arrghus, fought and defeated at the temple's end in order to gain access to the room holding theYellow Shrine Maiden. The temple incorporates trickery, as several chests holdBig Bombs instead of treasure, careful footwork, used to great effect in the long hallways littered with small, moving iron balls, and mastery of theMoon Pearl, as theDark World is accessed few times to progress. Enemies such as theWizzrobe are common to this realm, often popping up in an otherwise vacant rooms without notice, as do theRats andKeese familiar to all shadowy, dank regions.

One of the more unique aspects of this Temple is the vine-laden labyrinth theLinks encounter at the Temple's halfway point. Thick ivy coversBomb-able walls, which must be removed to progress, however, with the many distractions, Enemies, and diversions built into the labyrinth, it is quite easy to lose one's path during navigation.

The Eastern Temple is located inEastern Hyrule Field, north ofLake Hylia. AHylian researcher namedSago stands outside of its entrance, terrified of a mysterious voice inside.[3] He allowsPrincess Zelda entry inside in the hopes that she will destroy theMonster inside that is the source of the voice.[4]

TheDungeon is heavily focused on the positioning ofEnemies andObjects in addition toElectricity-themed challenges.Sparks can be found plentifully in the interior of the Temple, moving along set paths. In order to successfully navigate the Temple,Princess Zelda must manipulate the contents of the Temple, such as by sending Sparks into yellow boxes. These boxes act asSwitches that will activate whenever the required amount of Sparks has entered them.

The source of the voice is located at the end of the Temple. As Zelda enters the final room, she is met bySmog, who challenges her to a "game".[5] In this game, Smog follows around the Objects inside the room like a Spark while periodically shooting Electricity at Zelda. It also splits intoSmog Parts, which must be reunited in order to defeat it.[6] After Smog is defeated, it will concede defeat and leave behind 59 Rupees and aPiece of Heart.[7] Afterwards, a blueWarp Point will appear to bring Zelda back to the entrance of the Temple. Outside, Sago will reward her with anAncient Charm for chasing the Monster out of the Temple.
