Finnair tightens rules on baggage, seat selection

Passengers with cheaper ticket types will no longer be allowed to carry on larger bags without paying a fee.

Finland's state-owned airline Finnair is asking more passengers on European flights to pay luggage fees as it overhauls its pricing and removes rights to carry on large bags as hand luggage — unless travellers pay fees or buy a more expensive ticket.

In future those with the cheapest tickets will only be allowed to take one small bag onto the plane, and it will have to fit under the seat.

Larger bags will only be permitted if passengers pay a supplement.

Those buying the 'Classic economy' ticket will be allowed a small bag, a larger piece of hand luggage and a larger bag checked in and stowed in the hold.

Those looking to skirt the rules are likely to be disappointed by stepped-up checks at the gate.

"We are also enhancing monitoring of carry-on baggage at airports, and excess carry-on baggage will be moved to the cargo hold at cost," said the company's Chief Commercial OfficerOle Orvér in a press release.

In addition, fewer ticket types will grant passengers the right to select their own seats without paying a supplement.

Business class passengers on short and long haul flights will see their luggage allowances reduced too. Sports equipment, for example, will no longer be included in the allowance as an extra bag.

The changes come into force for new bookings made from the start of June.
