A man has been killed in a hang-gliding crash in Jämijärvi, western Finland.

The accident happened on Saturday afternoon close to the place where a skydiving expedition went disastrously wrong in April, killing eight people.

In a statement police said the man was born in 1949 and was from Parkano, near Tampere.

According to police, the hang-glider had flown to a height of over 50 metres while being towed by a quad bike at Jämijärvi air field, when it crashed. The pilot died from his injuries at the scene.

Police are investigating the cause of the incident.

Jämijärvi air field is a popular site for aviation sports. Following April’s fatal incident, ministers called for tougher regulations on amateur flying activities.
