The skydivers succeeded in the record-setting jump after seven attempts, four of them on Friday. The unsuccessful jumps were mainly due to some of the skydivers’ inability to stay in formation during the freefall.
The women, who had been in Utti for the entire week, were only able to achieve their goal on Friday due to variable cloud cover and high winds in the early part of the week.
“According to the rules the formation must first be shown to the judges. After this, the formation must exactly match the agreed and demonstrated example, including having hands joined in the agreed manner,” explained Skydive Finland spokesperson Faye Lawson.
While the rules prescribe how many skydivers should fly in each plane, they do not indicate how long the jumpers must maintain the formation. The 42 women who participated in the record attempt jumped from four planes, which also carried three videographers.
