Finnish-Swedish forest industry firm Stora Enso has announced plans to begin co-determination talks with employee unions about possible temporary worker layoffs at its Ingerois Mill in the south-eastern municipality of Kouvola.
The company said up to 180 workers at the facility could face being laid off for a maximum period of 90 days from June through December of this year.
Stora Enso said the demand for the type of boxboard manufactured at the Ingerios Mill has gone down while the cost of materials to produce it are high.
The plant’s boxboard is used in dry foods packaging applications, among others.
The company said employer-employee negotiations would begin on 8 May and last about two weeks.
Meanwhile, in March Stora Enso announced plans tosharply downsize operations at its Oulu Mill in western Finland, with the potential loss of 400 jobs. That facility currently employs some 600 workers.
