In order to download this tool you must purchase it at or above the minimum price of $79.99 USD. You will get access to the following files:
Log in with itch.io to leave a comment.
Yes absolutely. There are easy to use tools for increasing pixel size too (like for monsters, trainers, etc. And tileset is also quite easy)
The Steam version is a bit different (it is cheaper and gamified) and won't include a Steam key with the itch purchase, however we're thinking of providing a 25-75% discount code to all itch owners.
Hi. There aren't very major differences, however the itch version will be more expensive since it supports exporting to PC, Consoles, etc. The Steam version will be more similar to like RPGMaker on Switch for example, where you can upload and download games to Steam workshop to play. Somewhat similar to Mario Maker :) the itch version is more for professional and commercial use.
just to point it out, the demo crashed with an error:
############################################################################################ ERROR in action number 1 of Alarm Event for alarm 1 for object obj_player: audio_get_name argument 1 incorrect type (undefined) expecting a Number (YYGI32) at gml_Script_change_bgm ############################################################################################ gml_Script_change_bgm (line -1) gml_Script_set_area gml_Object_obj_player_Alarm_1
no idea what it means, as there is another error, but it needs to be checked
in the javscript console:
Exception thrown: See Javascript Console.
it looks good for the point of view.
There's a written tutorial available in the tutorials section of the official MonMae discord server. I've linked you to the exact message:

There will be a new tutorial video about this in December or January after we remake our youtube tutorial series for the new, updated version of MonMae
Thank you for your quick reply!
I'm about to make the purchase, but there are just a few final hiccups!
1. Can the UI layout and style be changed? This includes the battle UI, as well as the main menu in the scene.
2. Can mon wear equipment to influence parameters?
3. Whether there is a sea crossing function (included in Dokimon's promotional video).
Sorry to ask so much!
Hey, there's 6-8 different ui selections you can choose from as well as a couple for battling but you can also change it yourself as much as you want in the code or if you edit the sprites. Monsters can't wear equipment yet but it's easy to add and is a planned feature that will be added soon. There is water traversal^^
Hey~ It's limited only to this engine, but you can buy just the assets instead (and use in any engine) from this bundle :
https://itch.io/s/73088/retro-boy-assets-complete-bundle
This looks ideal for a project I am working on (have been trying to build in GB Studio but it has been a long slog with programming). I see one of your screenshots shows different types for the monsters - how many types are possible to program in, and can you change the names/etc in addition to their effectiveness against other types?
it occasionally goes on pretty generous sales :) the reason for the high cost is due to the inclusion of the included assets that comes with the engine. Though, once the engine gets finished there will be cheaper versions available that don't include all of the assets and just only focus on the engine
Good afternoon,
I am looking into buying your dev-kit for a project I am working on, I plan to build a pokemon style game for my college which will serve as an interactive map of the campus as well as utilize the game as a way to advertise services provided at the college, for example the tutoring center will allow you to practice with your pokemon team in game as it would allow you to practice and improve your skills in real life.
However, I do have two issues that I wanted to run by you first: The game would be developed by me but provided through the school for free, however as this would create a situation where I am NOT the publisher, would you have an stipulations or issues with this arrangement?
Second, I would like to have the game use an array of "monsters" based on the wildlife around the campus and as such would be using custom sprites, would this cause any conflicts for you and your asset packs or is it okay for new sprites to be created for the game?
Oh, and before a forget, a simpler question, can this be exported for a browser game? like those found here on itch.io? I would like to have a browser version of it and use itch.io to host it as a way to provide for those who have older devices, don't feel safe downloading the game and as a way to introduce people to the itch.io platform and perhaps inspire some of them to participate here or buy games and software from the creators here.
Thank you for your time and any clarifications you can provide.
Hello :) All of this is perfectly fine, you can add your own custom monsters to the game, if you need to you can even commission my team to make them for you, but probably you won't need to go that far
Yes the game you play in browser on this page is made through this program so you should be able to do it just the same :)
Hi! I wanted to clarify something, since I wasn't sure about the wording. I'm interested in playing games made with this engine, and I think it would be fun to try and make some games myself! When you say that you cannot sell assets within the game, does that mean that you can't sell games made with this engine? Or does it just mean that you cannot sell the actual assets. New to something like this so sorry for the confusion.
Hey~ Just the assets. Of course, if you make a game with the assets you can sell that game using these assets :) you just can't strip the assets out and sell those by themselves, or strip the assets out to use in another engine (if you wanna use a different engine please see my individual asset packs for sale). Hope that clears it up!
I'm just curious because I didn't see it anywhere listed. Will MonMae made games be able to be multiplayer, as in battle someone else on a different device or trade? I am just learning coding and this platform looks like such a reliever to get the ideas out of my head into something tangible. Buying it now!
Hello, thank you so much for your interest in the project :) I haven't delved into multiplayer yet as there as still some things I wanna do first that I believe are more important and more useful for the users. You can read about what I have in story in the devlogs attached to this page :)
As for multiplayer, I think probably it will be the last thing I do, if it's within the realm of possibility. I'm planning to have all the features I have planned for MonMae finished sometime next year, so once that happens, I will do my research and see if multiplayer can be added somehow, because that's a feature that not only lots of people have asked for but it's also something I really want to do and implement and see in my own projects too^^
I'm about to buy this myself I just wanted to check are there any assets you sell that are compatable with this engine that aren't included with it? I see a number of "starters sets" do they come with the engine or is it worth getting them along side it. I only plan on using the engine not using it outside of the engine
Sorry :( The only thing I can recommend for this instead is watching the YouTube tutorials (they're linked on this page) and also joining my discord server and asking other people what they think or how their experience has been.
Eventually I'm gonna be uploading even more tutorials, and also probably even some devlogs so that you can get further insight, but for now what I mentioned above is all I can offer you.
When the tool goes on Steam we might have a demo, but that's a long ways off.
Hello, of course you can battle other trainers! Did you play the demo? I'm not sure if the demo let's you get as far as battling players, but it's very possible yes :)
We even have an intuitive trainer editor that we just recently released that lets you make trainers and assign their monster teams. You can see avideo of that here.
Hello, we do have plans to make a version similar to how you outlined at a discounted price, but we're waiting until the majority of MonMae updates are finished to keep development smooth. If we open up and start updating and supporting two versions of MonMae it would create difficulties and delays.
You can add your own sprites and/or edit the ones you bought to use in your game however you please :)
The thing that's not allowed is exporting assets from MonMae to use them in a elsewhere. If you're making a game with MonMae, you can add or edit sprites as you please.
If you buy artwork in one of my bundles or asset packs, you can edit them or use them together with other assets for your game as you please~
If you have any more questions feel free to contact me in our discord channel (it's linked on this page). I can respond much quicker on there :)
Hey :) Thanks so much for the input. We do sales pretty often so maybe keep an eye out, as we've seen prices as low as 60$
I'll be working on a cheaper version that doesn't include goodies like the massive amounts of art, music, and sounds, for those that want to save, and make their own of those anyway, so perhaps you can wait for one of those~ We haven't done so thus far since the engine is still in development and we don't have the capacity to submit multiple versions just yet, however we have plans to do so once MonMae is where we want it to be^^
That's great to hear, I am rolling my own assets and things so I am interested in a "pared down" version. RPGArchitect, for instance, is currently $30 on Steam, for comparison's sake. I am interested in this and will be watching eagerly but the battle architecture is mostly what I'm interested in. I'm guessing a final date is nowhere near finalized, but if you had to place a guess at a 1.0 version, how long would you say it would take, given the current output?
Heyo~ Thanks for your interest in the project :)
We have a roadmap type thing in our discord group, which is basically a to-do list that shows things we've completed, are currently working on, and will be working on very soon. Here's a link to that.
I can also add a "future goals" section to that page if you're interested in hearing more about that as well~
