Uploaded primarily for the grebe, but this might also be considered as a soundscape due to all the other species that were vocalizing at the time of the recording.

Recorded in a deep canyon with a reservoir that has a lot of water. Numerous migranting passerines were also in the area.

at Twin Ponds, apparently two pairs of grebes in a pond large enough for one pair, contesting rights to the pond, most of the vocalizing taking place out of my sight, mostly inside a dense cattails clump, some other parts in open water blocked from my view; amazing range of calls, interaction calls, and songs, although the recording affected by abundant other vocal birds and frogs; interval shortened at16:28 for more from a windy late a.m.; a second long recording isXC971594 (better);

same apparent four birds, 99% out of view, including the splashing sounds from inside the cattails; alarm calls, interaction calls, a couple types of song like vocalizations, presumably contesting dominance of the small pond that is large enough for one pair; 2nd recording of two, the first beingXC971603, this one probably better; interval shortened at14:32 from windy late morning;

alarm call from one of the breeding adults, which adults have a large, stripey juvenile on the pond (the adults have never seen a human being jump into the pond, let alone swim after a juvenile, but you can't be too careful!); sound of the grebe diving at0:24;

pair contact calls as two birds swam toward each other on the open water, then, after0:08, a cackle from a bird of a different pair back in the cattails;

not seen; in the cattails where they have been breeding in recent years; interval shortened at0:24, in response to vocalizing by a more distant bird; shortened at0:33, two birds, and again at0:46;

species seen repeatedly, but not seen vocalizing; first outburst seemed to be stimulated by an outburst by American Coots, and is a fragment; interval shortened at0:18 for pair interaction into song, not seen, a little off mic at the start; shortened at0:31, pair interaction calls; shortened at0:43, complete song;
