Abstract

The rad52-1 mutation prevents homothallic mating type interconversion and reduces mitotic recombination in yeast. It has been previously reported that rad52-1 abolishes meiotic recombination. These data suggest either that a generalized recombination function(s) is required for mating type switching or that generalized recombination and specific homothallic functions are jointly controlled by theRAD52 gene. The rad52-1 mutation affects the interconversion of the two yeast mating types (a and alpha) differently, suggesting that the interconversion process is not equivalent for both mating types. This type of asymmetry is not predicted by current models of homothallic switching.
