Disputed Origins
There are publications and family trees which identify Hannah's birth surname as Lamb. There were members of the Lamb family in Springfield, Massachusetts Bay Colony at the appropriate time, but there's no indication of Hannah's relationship to them, if any.
Biography
Hannah's birth surname, date, and location are unknown. Her first marriage was to Edmund Haynes, a carpenter at Springfield. They had three children:[1]
- Hannah; m Joseph Root
- Sarah; m Enos Kingsley
- Ruth b Apr 27, 1646;[2] m ___ Hawes
Edmund died at Springfield in 1646.[3]
She and carpenter George Langton were married (as his second marriage) at Springfield on June 29, 1648.[4]
George and Hannah had one child together:
- Hester b Aug 22, 1649[5]
In 1656, Hannah and neighbors' talk of witchcraft sparked a lawsuit wherein Joseph Parsons charged neighbor Sarah Bridgeman with slander for calling his wife a witch. Hannah seemed to later regret her involvement, saying she was "sorry she should have had hard thoughts of her [Mrs. Parsons] on noe better grounds.[6]
Hannah and George Langton were on the list of residents who signed a covenant to create the First Church of Northampton on June 4, 1661.[7]
George Langton died in November of 1676[8]
