WikiTree Sourcer is a Browser Extension developed byRob Pavey and other contributors that helps the user to search for sources and cite them, thus saving a lot of time and manual typing.
It focuses on three goals:
- From a WikiTree profile page it provides the ability tosearch other genealogy websites for relevant records.
- From one of these genealogy websites' records page it can extract data andbuild a citation.
- Also from one of these genealogy websites records page it cansearch other genealogy websites forsimilar records. For example on an Ancestry page it can help find free versions of the same original source.
The extension is still in active development as features andsupported sites are added. The project isopen source and programmers are invited to help add support for new sites.
The extension is free to download for Chrome and Firefox (donations can be made if desired via the popup menu). For Safari there is a small charge to install the app because Apple charges a yearly subscription fee to publish on the App Store and does not allow donation links in the extension.
How to install
The extension works in many different browsers.
- For Chrome, Opera, Brave, Edge, Vivaldi and other Chromium based browsers , install it from theChrome Web Store.
- For Firefox install it from theFirefox Add-ons page.
- For Safari search forWikiTree Sourcer in the App Store on Mac, iPad or iPhone. An app is installed, when you run the app it installs the extension in Safari.
For efficient use of the extension (in Chrome at least) you will want to "pin" the extension (under the jigsaw-piece icon in Chrome) so that the "[1]" always shows up in the toolbar.
Before using it too much check out the options page ("Options..." on the menu). There are different options for formatting and you can select which countries your subscriptions for Ancestry and FMP are in.

With 2.8.9, I see two issues with searches for Welsh FamilySearch marriage records, e.g. starting fromhttps://www.familysearch.org/en/tree/person/details/GB4R-18W,
1) Select ">" next to "Search Family Search", select "Search for a specific collection..."
Results in the error message "No supported collections in date range and country:Countries: Wales"
2) Return to the previous level and select "Search with specified parameters..." instead, choose type "Marriage", then unselect any married name(s), and then "Do Search"
Results in No Results Found, because (as with one of my previously reported bugs), the Sex search parameter is pre-filled.
Remove the "Select Sex" parameter and run the "Search" and bingo, there are my two results.
Thanks again,Gary
Thanks.
That doesn't help when you are searching across multiple collections though. So should I exclude geneder for all FamilySearch searches?
Sourcer 2.8.8 with "FamilySearch > Specific Collection... Civil Registration Marriage Index" from a FamilySearch profile page (e.g.https://www.familysearch.org/en/tree/person/details/LDXK-5H7) runs the FamilySearch search with the person's Sex. This, unfortunately, guarantees the search will fail (seems like a bug in FamilySearch), returning no results. If you remove the Sex search term, the search returns valid matches.
Thanks,Gary
now that screw up any data base, hits a new probem u not condiser,u should ask what sex asasign at brith, to provent this from happing, also if milatey recoreds are wrong and supporing documents prove otherthere no way to fix this, IE my grandfather, navy says he never got navy cross . how ever i got orgianal doucments said he did,now i discover there over 100 documents i cant get to that was given free to places like this yeat u charge us to find it ,in fack most of the data is cross link with other sights, free data , think there a probem with getting free data then forceing some one pay then clame copy right to itin fack u have no formal right to data, it public information so cant be copy writed, by any busness, think u should look at your own policys,as i would challage any busness in cort on this, and i would win, you all no more then data brokers, and maybe some compants need fiiled with dod, on that milatery recoreds must be given free, and cant hold copy wirte but only to liveing familys, and something i will get done soon
Sourcer 2.8.8 with "FreeBMD Birth" search from a female's FamilySearch profile page (e.g.https://www.familysearch.org/en/tree/person/details/PS3R-VB7) pre-fills the FreeBMD Birth search page with the person's married surname (AKA) instead of their maiden name.
Thanks,Gary
I should get to it soon.
Keep up the great work.
In the last few days I've noticed that previously working ancestry source links in profiles like Pengilly-211 no longer work. Both the sharing link and the record link come up with an error "This site can’t be reached" when ancestry itself is working fine.

I love your WikiTree Sourcer!
Ran into this interesting problem, which I'm sure you can fix easily.
I was adding a spouse and Setting Fields from Person Data that I saved from this Ancestry page:https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/39192864/person/19436964926/facts.
After adding a character to First Name at birth (to get around your current known bug) and accepting the death location which did not have the country name (USA) and pressing Continue, it correctly filled in everything on the Edit page.
I then pressed "Continue" at the bottom of the page and it gave me the message: "Change Needed. 1. A marriage date cannot be interpreted. Please use YYYY-MM-DD, DD Mon YYYY, or Month DD, YYYY". It turns out that the person's marriage date on Ancestry is given as 31 Apr 1935 which Sourcer must obviously be picking up as an error because April only has 30 days.
Clicking Continue flashes "Validating" and then just still gives the same error. The problem is that the marriage date is on the next page and there is no way to get there to correct it.
So either you need to make that a non-needed fix so the person can go to the next page, or get them to fix it in a dropdown (like you do for places), or remove the marriage date check completely, (or maybe something else) to allow editing to continue when adding a spouse with an illegal marriage date.

A workaround for now would be to use the WBE option to use the old style add person page with everything on one page.
I am having some problems with adding new person , I have version 2.8.7 I turned it off and on it would not upgrade to the 2.8.8 I even uninstalled Sourcer and it only installed the 2.8.7 version when I try to add new person , it will pick up the info but when I try to drop it on the new person page it will not load not sure if its me or not
https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/1880556/workaround-wikitree-sourcer-hang-when-adding-spouse-mother
It is fixed in 2.8.8 but that has not yet made it through the review process for the Chrome Web Store.
ScotlandsPeople was offline for a few hours earlier; now it's back and WikiTree Sourcer has stopped working.
Error message I am getting is
"WikiTree Sourcer could not interpret the data on this page.It looks like a ScotlandsPeople page but does not contain the required person data."
I can't provide a link as it won't work without a ScotlandsPeople account.
I have a minor one - FamilySearch Montana obituaries are identified as "Death". It would be nice if they said "Obituary" for the record type.(Using version 2.8.6)
Examples:https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QKM7-DN5C?lang=enhttps://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QKMQ-R1MT?lang=en
It's easy enough for me to change it when pasting, but I thought you might want to review to see if it should be improved.
I have put that on the issues list here:https://github.com/RobPavey/wikitree-sourcer/issues/101
I have been happily using Sourcer (and WBE) on the Kiwi browser on Android. However, support for the Kiwi browser was discontinued as of January 2025 so it is really unsafe to continue using it. Looking into other options it seemed like Firefox was the best best as i can use the Wikitree extensions on the Firefox desktop version. However, I cannot find any Wikitree extensions in Firefox for Android. Is this something you can make happen?
I don't have an Android device to test on. For a while I was checking the box when I released for Firefox to say it worked on Android but I got an error about that and stopped.I never heard from anyone who was able to use it in Firefox on Android. Have you tried any other extensions in Firefox on Android?
When sourcing a FreeBMD record I noticed that the death registration quarter was cited as Jan-Feb-Mar, but this was actually the birth registration quarter, the death registration quarter according to GRO was July-Aug-Sep - is this a bug in WikiTree Sourcer or a transcription error in Free BMD?https://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/information.pl?cite=aGzrr%2B%2BC02OpOvuJRw7OVw&scan=1The WikiTree profile is:Lambert-18820Thanks for a great resource.
I don't know where the correct time and place is to make requests? For anyone with German roots in Schleswig-Holstein or Danish roots, the free source Danish FamilySearch is a fantastic resource. If you can extract data from there, I would be so grateful.
I know you're busy with both the WikiTree update, and recovering from RootsTech, so certainly understand putting this on your back burner of possibilities. I'm also aware that you are a volunteer. So, thank you if you are willing to entertain this!
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Harvey-19405Male instead of female. Using Chrome
In Sourcer version 2.8.5 I have changed to code so that it should not be affected by WBE.
Thanks for the magnificent work on this. The update to the WikiTree look and feel over the last couple of days inspired me to purchase the extension on the Apple Store for Safari. It is SO GREAT, and I should have started using it before now!I do have a question about how to use it with the search for marriage records with the New South Wales Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages (https://familyhistory.bdm.nsw.gov.au/lifelink/familyhistory/search/marriages). I have found that when I am searching for the marriage of a female the extension automatically populates their names in the fields for the Groom rather than the Bride. Is there something that I need to do to adjust this behaviour?Cheers
I just tried that on a female WikiTree profile and it correctly populated the bride name. Could you share the link for a WT profile that is not working for you? Thanks,Rob
Yeah, it's odd. This was a profile before that gave me a problem:https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Marshall-8983. I just tried it again and was still not right. I did try it with a different profile after offering my first comment though and it was fine!
Again, I love the sourcer. Copy the person data in Ancestry, set fields in Wikitree, build the citations in Ancestry, paste in Wikitree. Repeat. So efficient.
But like I complained about on the forum, it is driving me crazy with the Swedish records. Assuming you have Ancestry, check out this profile:https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/200767639/person/292643150552/facts
When I build the citations and paste, it makes both "Sweden, Household Clerical Surveys, 1654-1901" records each a marriage record! And then in the source text, it gets rid of all the interesting stuff like the birthday, the date range, and the household members. It must be difficult to handle every record out there, but please, when you get a chance:o Don't treat all these unknown records as marriage records, make them "a record of..." like you often do.o Or/and make an option to decide how to treat unknown records. Like an option to "override category", then a pull-down so I can choose "Census" or "Birthday" or "Marriage" etc as appropriate. I might have to do them individually but that would be an improvement. (I would choose Census for these.)
I can't find a workaround for this problem. Help! If you need more info you can also message me.
I'm new to using the extension and hoping you can help! Whenever I try to use Build All Citations on ancestry.co.uk I get the error 'All sources were excluded due to option settings'. I cant seem to find an option causing this issue - can you help?
I still get this pop up when I open the extension so I can extract data:
WikiTree Sourcer doesn't know how to extract data from this page.
It looks like a FamilySearch page but not a record, image or person page. Sometimes this is because you are no longer logged into FamilySearch. If that may be the case try reloading this page and see if it asks you to login.
Sometimes this is because the page had not finished loading when you clicked the extension icon. If that may be the case try clicking the extension icon again.
What should I do???
They changed their person profile URLs which stopped Sourcer from working. I have released Sourcer version 2.8.1 which has a fix. It is available for Firefox but it will be a day or two before Chrome and Safari approve it for release.
In the last few days I have spotted some strange behaviour when creating census tables. This happens using both Find My Past and Ancestry. As an example this was output...
Name | Relation | Status | Sex | Age | Occupation | Birth Place |
... | ... | ... | ... | ... | ... | ... |
Arthur [Fitzgerald] Kinnard | Visitor | M | 14 | London, England

Six people have been cut off at the top (including the head of the household) and 24 below the list showing. This is the page it is taken fromhttps://www.ancestry.com/search/collections/8767/records/8067946Thanks
This is by design to avoid creating huge tables for hotels and institutions. It is controlled by these options under "Household Tables > General"
Maximum number of people to include in a table:
If the max is exceeded and selected person is related to the head:
If the max is exceeded and selected person is not related to the head:
Check your settings for those options and let me know if it doesn't appear to be working correctly.
These are my settings:Include only people related to head (up to max limit) plus others up to limitInclude the head plus selected person plus the people before and after up to limit
So with that option it *should* include all the related people but for some reason it doesn't seem to be doing that. I will add it to my list to look at.
In this case you could set the max to 40 to avoid the problem
It used to fill in the marriage details when you added the spouse after the initial person provided the marriage date and place was included in the couple relationship on FamilySearch.
It now no longer picks up this information and you have to add it manually.e.g. I just added Edwards-47936 after previously adding Croxford-300 both using WikiTree Sourcer fromhttps://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/GNKJ-JZH andhttps://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/G3SB-TD9 respectively.
I've left Edwards-47936 as it has been created and you can note it did not pick up the marriage info from FamilySearch i.e. 1889Croydon, Surrey, England, United Kingdom
As I create many WikiTree profiles of couples and their children it would be good to have the automatic loading of marriage info from FamilySearch restored.
regards,
Martin
I'm not seeing that issue when I try it myself. This is what I did:1. Went tohttps://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/G3SB-TD9 and used Sourcer to to Save Person Data2. Went tohttps://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Croxford-300, clicked Edit tab and Add/Remove Spouse3. Clicked "Create a new profile for her spouse"4. Used Sourcer to do "Set Fields from Person Data"5. Pressed Continue until I got to the "Details of the marriage" page. Everything looks correct here.
I did not advance beyond that as I do not want to create a duplicate. If you do those steps do you not see the details of the marriage filled in?
Cheers,Rob
thanks for your reply. I do steps 1,2,3,4 as you describe. The marriage info does not complete, i.e. the fields are empty. Pressing continue per step 5 does not bring me to a "Details of Marriage page" but to list of possible existing wikitree duplicates to select or indicate "none of these". I have made screenshots but don't know how to get them to you. my email is [email address removed] if that helps.
Martin
To get to the marriage details you have to select Continue and then "None of these is a match". You should then see the marriage details page.
However if you use the WikiTree Browser Extension "Add Person Redesign" option then the marriage details will show up on the first page.
I have tried both scenarios and the marriage details get filled in correctly by Sourcer for me.
Firstly I deleted all cookies and cache from Chrome Browser.I was using WikiTree Browser extension (Preview) with Add person redesign. I tried turning off Add Person redesign. Still no marriage details. I tried turning off completely the WikiTree Browser extension, and that did then populate marriage. Unfortunately I use many features of WikiTree Browser Extension, so I thought maybe the problem was that I was using the Preview version, so I turned off Preview and turned on normal WikiTree Browser Extension, with Add Person redesign. No marriage details. Tried just turning off Add person redesign. No marriage details. Tried turning off completely all of WikiTree Browser extension and also Preview completely off, and now marriage details poulate.
It must be something to do with either WikiTree Sourcer options or WikiTree Browser Extension options but i can't figure out which. Any other suggestions?
Martin
I tried messing with WikiTree Browser Extension and it turns out if I turn on the "Other" section in options, the marriage info no longer populates. However with all options on (and default options within sub options) except for "Other" and "Community (which I don't use)" turned off, the marriage stuff will populate OK.
Not sure what could be causing problem from within "Other" section.
Martin
I am running OK now.It works fine now with all the "Other" options turned off.I can live with it for now so no hurry.I only previously used a few Other options anyway, regarding Connections and Categories.Martin
It is actually not working on any WT page that I try to access.
I'm not able to reproduce this. I am using Safari Version 17.4.1 and macOS Sonoma 14.4.1 (23E224) on a MacBook Pro from 2023.Has it ever worked for you on this Mac?I'm not getting reports from anyone else about issues on Safari so it sounds like a problem specific to your setup. When do you get this error? Is it when you click on the [1] icon in the tool bar? Did it ask you about permissions the first time you did this?Let me know if you still have this issue when you get your macMini. As a fallback, you can use it in Chrome or Firefox on your mac.Cheers,Rob
I just downloaded WikiTree Sourcer to try it out and get the below error message. I am running the latest MacOS Sequoia 15.2.

Is there a way when pulling sources off of FamilySearch for burials that we could have the source have the cemetery name added too
Here is an example (https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/sources/LCZ7-ZWS) -this is what is on FamilySearch and is one of Ada's sources...NameAda Elizabeth Nance WagesBirth Date23 Oct 1878Death Date01 May 1952Event TypeBurialEvent PlaceCool Branch, Fairfield, South Carolina, United States of AmericaCemeteryCool Branch Baptist Church CemeteryPhotograph IncludedYNoteContains Biography
This is what comes up (below) when i "Build Citations" -note that it does not name the "cemetery", it just names the "Event Place"(would be great if it did both :) )This is the outputAda Elizabeth Nance Wages died on 1 May 1952 and was buried in Cool Branch, Fairfield, South Carolina, United States.<ref>Burial:"Find a Grave Index"

WikiTree Sourcer doesn't know how to extract data from this site
Dost it have something to do with the domain name?
Sourcer does support ancestrylibrary.com. Does that work at your FSC?
I have not heard of ancestryinstitution.com before.
It looks like ancestryinstitution.com is what the LDS Church has for use through their portal at local Family Search Centers. (Formerly Known as Family History Centers) The are literally hundreds, if not thousands of them around the world.
From what I can see, ancestrylibrary.com is what library's can get through Proquest like othe pay sites.
The is also Ancestryclassroom.com for K-12 schools.
found this:https://www.ancestryinstitution.com/loginand this:https://support.ancestry.com/s/article/Ancestry-Institution
Would it be possible to add support for ancestryinstitution.com ? I can test.
I guess it might be worth having ancestryclassroom too. Would need to find a place to test, how hard could that be :-)
Thank You, John Stewart
2.7.0 is available for Safari and Firefox now. Google are taking a long time getting to reviewing it for the Chrome Web Store. It should be soon but that could mean a couple of days.
I'm not sure if it will fix the issue you are talking about as I have not heard of that issue.
I've checked with others in the Appalachian Project team and they are not having issues with 2.6.7. Could there be some sort of setting in Edge that got corrupted on my laptop that is preventing Sourcer from parsing the data correctly? It appears that when I select 'Save Person Data' it doesn't seem to be parsing through the FS profile having 15-20 sources like usual. It returns from the query very fast and I don't see it scrolling (a few seconds) on my screen like previously. Any thoughts? Thanks, John
P.S. It is some problem with Edge. I just tried using Chrome and do not have issues. Nevertheless, after creating several profiles without issues, I unexpectedly get a message that 'Sourcer has been corrupted' and asking if I want to attempt to restore it. Come to think of it, the same thing happened last week while using the Edge version. Any ideas why this may be happening? It's a first for me.

The citation contains the line "Expression error: Unrecognised word "uk""
The wiewaswie website and some others use the abbreviation BS. Using that on an English language page is not intended. Can the wiewaswie and openarch(ieven) sourcered be changed such that BS is -always- translated into Burgerlijke Stand ?
Michel
For example & is generated as &This is oke for normal display but unexpected behaviour in the text field of the bio. It also is causing issues when the bios are used to scrape data from them.
In Python an unescape can solve this:https://docs.python.org/3/library/html.htmlNo idea how to do this in js.Example page:https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Kelfkens-57
Michel
I'm not sure how that would cause any issues.
those HTML entities cause issues with the automatic scripts that depend on UTF-8 formatting, as ; is a disallowed character in URLs.
It is also not suggested to use html entities in WikiTree text, you should use the basic Wikipedia code to format, not HTML entities.
I am trying to have my scripts not break on these URLs, but it is hard.
Michel
It looks like it was added manually. Or possibly something like AutoBio added it?
The big changeset is this:https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Weerd-12&diff=191801598&oldid=191801233
So your idea is that this is WBE and not sourcerer?
https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Dalmeijer-23&diff=175928432&oldid=175900098
Is it correct that the left is produced originally by Sourcer, but then the right is another extension?
and I was trying to build a citation for Walter J Hill but didn’t get that far.
I was able to do build citations from 1921 Census entries in the past.
I am using version 2.6.2.
Should I worry that all of the links are now accessible only to people with Ancestry accounts. I had used Source to (hopefully) make that unnecessary. I would need to redo many links if it no longer works.
Thanks in advance.
The issue is fixed in Sourcer version 2.5.2.
The Ancestry Sharing Links were not affected as far as I know - those are the ones that let non-subscribers view images on Ancestry.
The search string submitted by Sourcer is in the formhttps://billiongraves.com/search/results?CollectionID=&CatalogID=&PageNumber=1&PageSize=20&GivenNames=Isaac&FamilyName=Woodford&EventDeathYear=1944&EventDeathYearRange=2&Country=United%20Kingdom
When I manually enter the death year and death tolerance it becomeshttps://billiongraves.com/search/results?cemetery_country=United%20Kingdom&given_names=Isaac&family_names=Woodford&death_year=1944&year_range=2&size=15
It appears to me that the names BillionGraves uses for the search fields must have changed.
Fails on this page.https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/39056373/absolom_liller
But works on this one.https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/187555477/penelope_liller
WikiTree Sourcer version is: 2.4.0
A Find a grave suggestion.
Is it possible to have the sourcer detect if there is Photo type: Grave? If there is no photo type grave then have the source citation say no image instead of has image if there is just any image type? I manually change my source lines to no image if it contains images but none of them are of a memorial. Sometimes I probably forget to do that.
intermentHasPhoto: "true"
Or the photos array value in var findagrave has a type: Grave for one of the photos.
I would guess intermentHasPhoto is set to true if there is a type Grave photo. I just did a quick look at the two links above and a couple other memorials.
I don't normally try to parse scripts on pages - normally just work off the HTML.
It is also in the html. For each photo there is a "Photo type:"
Or back to the variable in the photos array there is a total number of photos.
photos: {"__typename":"PhotoInfo","total":0
Maybe it is just me with this understanding. I take the has image to mean it has an image of the memorial and not some random photo.
Thanks for looking into this.
There is no grave photo but the #photoT-g input element is checked. So possibly the script method is required. I note that in the search results:https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/search?firstname=john&middlename=&lastname=smith&birthyear=&birthyearfilter=&deathyear=1930&deathyearfilter=&location=&locationId=&memorialid=&mcid=&linkedToName=&datefilter=&orderby=r&plot=&page=5#sr-79690649It does say "No grave photo" for this person.

For example, I previously used Sourcer to create source citations from the 1871 census forUrbain Goguen. If I follow the direct link (https://recherche-collection-search.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/home/record?idnumber=39358735&app=census) and try to use Sourcer from there, it won't work. But, If Isearch for the same record again, Sourcer works from that page (https://recherche-collection-search.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/Home/Record?app=census&IdNumber=39358735&ecopy=4396319_00071).
The same thing happens for all the census pages I've tried, not just the 1871 census.
Would you be able to look into this when you get a chance?Thank you very much!Valerie
I am consistently struck by how many members in the Member of the Week interview say that their favorite feature or function is the WikiTree Sourcer. (For this week: it'sSuzanne Lowe.)
Bravo, and thank you!
Chris
I can do them one at a time on the source page. When I have 15-20 sources, this is very tedious.I reinstalled 3 times. I had HP test reload Edge. Then I reinstalled the app and Sourcer.Did the program change?Anyone else having the issue?Thank you.
I have updated WikiTree Sourcer. The fix is in version 2.3.7. It may take a day or two to be available from all web stores.
Census Household Tables have been acting unusually for me. I'm using the Chrome extension. When there is a very long table it seems to be abbreviating it, or adding elipses to one line a few lines above the person I'm focused on for that page. (It seems to behaving the same in Ancestry & Familysearch.) That's a bit confusing, so let me use an example. The 1841 census for Charles West in Northampton, Northamptonshire.
The census can be found for this household here:Familysearch: (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M7QC-R38)Ancestry: (https://www.ancestry.com/discoveryui-content/view/8858150:8978)
There are 21 people in the census record (he ran a grammar school and was the Clergyman). However, only 4 people show up in the table (as seen below).
Name | Sex | Age | Occupation | Birth Place |
... | ... | ... | ... | ... |
Elizabeth Burnabe | F | 20 | Northamptonshire
Charles West | M | 40 | ||
Eleanor West | F | 35 | ||
Caroline West | F | 25 |
When I review "extracted data" from the debugger I see all of the entries.
It's not happening every single time, which is even more confusing. For example, this record for Maria Woodford in 1861 works fine.https://www.ancestry.com/discoveryui-content/view/15771143:8765?ssrc=pt&tid=79171525&pid=40400768109
Thanks for taking a look.

I am using Firefox version 2.3.6 and its not working on this page:https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/sources/KL6H-PCS
Thought that might help.
Thank you for your work on this.
If still not working please let me know what it is doing? Is it getting an error message when you bring up the menu?
I tried it on another computer (Windows, Firefox) and it did not work. However, I tried it on edge on the new version 2.3.6 and it worked fine. On Firefox, it does some sort of count down where it is retrying multiple times and can't get the sources (I did Save Person Data from both Sources and Details screen on FS). Not sure what's up with Firefox. I will just use Edge for now and export my stuff from WBE and import to Edge.
Thank you!
Newt here, going through the user guide. I have yet to try out Sourcer for myself but I have seen what it does. Thanks for the app, it makes gorgeous pages and the sources have much better detail.
I think I may have useful input on this thread: Firefox will allow me to sign in to FamilySearch but after that there is nothing but the spinning wheel of death. I have been getting this result for weeks now, and I can't actually get into my account. I think this is because Firefox and FamilySearch have decided not to speak to each other... Firefox has the pop-up permissions set correctly to allow the site to function, but it just is not cooperating.
Sourcer, on Firefox, can see my death-wheeling FamilySearch account (it recognizes that I am on a FamilySearch page but tells me it can't read it either) - it seems easiest fix is just to start using Edge for my research.
Thanks again for your wonderful app! I am going to enjoy using it once I've learned how.

While checking for sources on Family Search, found this about 10 minutes ago:
WikiTree Sourcer [1]
"WikiTree Sourcer doesn't know how to extract data from this page.

I have released a new version (2.3.6) which should hopefully fix the issue. It will take some time to be reviewed for Chrome and Safari before it is available. It is available now for Firefox.
The content script did not respond. Cannot initialize the WikiTree Sourcer menuError: Could not establish connection. Receiving end does not exist.
This was on a 1921 census transcript page.
I'm using Chrome on a Mac. It seems to work sometimes, if I reload the Family Search page enough times.
Since this morning, building individual citations seems to be working, though building all citations from the profile page doesn't.
Love WikiTree Sourcer and feel so blessed that we have people like you that make our lives so much easier.
I have an issue, which I have probably created myself. If I am on Family Search and make a request to build all citations, I get a comment "An error occurred getting sources." I can build a narrative with a citation on each source individually.
On Ancestry I have no problem on my request to build all citations.
Please tell me what have I done now?????

By the way I use Firefox.
Thanks for adding the browser that you use. I had another report of this issue where the user was using the Brave browser but it worked when they switched to Firefox. So this is different.
One question, has Build All Citations worked for you before in Firefox? I.e. is this a new problem that just started happening?
Does it happen on all FamilySearch profiles?
Possible things to try:- reload the FS page, make sure you are logged in to FS
- try the Sources tab of the FS profile rather than the details tab
- close Firefox and reopen it.
Let me know if any of those help.
I will answer your questions first-
Build All Citations did work for me before in Firefox? This was a new problem that just started happening. It was happening on all FamilySearch profiles.
I did everything you asked me to do, including deleting the extension and reloading it.
Everything is working perfectly now.
Thanks so much for all of your help. This is a great app. Saves a lot of my time.
If I owe you coffee, or chocolate, let me know.
Cheryl
It seems that the Firefox version is not working for me on this page or the other people linked her. I uninstalled and reinstalled (after backing up the settings). Not sure what is up. I tried Save Person Data and it grabbed the information about the person, but not the sources.
https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/GMDN-B57
BTW, I did not reinstall my options after reinstalling the app. I figured i would check with the default settings but it did not work. This is all on Firefox. It works fine on Edge, though. I also tried the Build Sources option, but that didn't work either. In both cases there seemed to be a "retry 1, retry 2, retry 3" count.
Thank you. Loving the app!!!
I just tried that page in Chrome and Firefox. It seems to be working correctly for me. It may be your option settings. If you do "Build All Citations" does it save the sources to the clipboard? If that works, it suggests that you don't have the option turned on to automatically build the citations.
If you are doing Save Person Data in order to add a new person to WikiTree then check this option:
Add/Merge -> Add Person -> Automatically do "Build All Citations" during "Save Person Data" (if site supports it) and include the citations in the biography when doing "Set Fields from Person Data"
If you are doing Save Person Data in order to update an existing WikiTree profile using Merge/Edit then check this option:
Add/Merge -> Merge Edit -> Automatically do "Build All Citations" during "Save Person Data" (if site supports it) and include the citations in the biography when doing "Merge Edit from Person Data"
I hope that helps.
I checked all of those options (they weren't checked), but it still doesn't work and I get a countdown about Retry 1, Retry 2, Retry 3 and then it doesn't work on this page.https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/sources/LDMT-Z46
It's working on Edge, though.
Thank you for the help.
Wow! What an wonderful invention - thank you so much!
I have been blasting through 'Needs' categories with a new vengeance since I have taken to the Victorian registration Sourcer citations in the last few days.
Congratulations on developing such a great tool.
Clare
I'm not sure what you mean by "Additionally the asterisk is missing after the <references> notation". Are you using Set Fields from Person Data" or "Set Fields from Citation Data"? Either way, if it is adding source (non-inline) citations automatically it will insert an asterisk or each of them.
One change I did make was that it now automatically puts the last page of the Add Person flow into "advanced sourcing mode". So if your normal flow was:
- In your WikiTree Settings you have Advanced Sourcing turned off
- You are using "Set Fields from ..." and you have the default options - so it doesn't automatically Build All Citations or insert the citation automatically
- You are manually typing in your own source on the final page of the Add person flow
Then it is true that WikiTree will no longer add a * before the citation that manually typed in.
I am unfamiliar with some terms and formats, a novice. The * always appeared after the <references/> notation when I would add a new person's information using the sourcer. I would remove it if I was adding citations with narrative, so don't need it.
Thanks for pointing this out and I can try a few different things.
More details in the G2G question:https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/1746005/bio-auto-generate-parent-links-not-working
"It looks like a MyHeritage page but not a record page or peson page."Note the unconventional spelling of "person". But is there any page on MyHeritage where I can get data for a person? For examplehttps://www.myheritage.com/FP/edit-profile.php?s=49684311&indID=2000203&origin=family-tree gives me this message.
I tried that link but it is to a person in a private tree so I cannot access it.However, I did try someone from my public tree (https://www.myheritage.com/profile-858706251-2000009/arthur-eli-pavey) and it looks like MyHeritage have changed the format of person pages and Sourcer no longer understands them. I will put a task on my list to revisit this. Thanks for letting me know.
Firefox on Windows 10.
This can happen if the profile does not have a UK country shown in the Birth, Death of Marriage locations or if the profile dates are out of range for those sites. It could also happen if there are more possible search sites that fit on the menu (this limit is set by on option). Either way, you can work around it...
Try clicking on "Show All Search Sites...". This brings up a submenu. At the top it will show which dates and countries its filtering by on a yellow line. You can click on that yellow line and turn the filtering off to show all possible sites to search.
the extension version is 2.2.4
