Biography

  • Much in this biography has been taken from Lemuel Shattuck'sMemorials of the descendants of William Shattuck[1]

William Shattuck was born about 1621 in England.[2] Some sources have said he was from Somerset, England, or that he was born on 3 May 1628 in Boston, Massachusetts,[3] but there is no evidence supporting either of these claims. Please note that YDNA analysis at 111 markers strongly suggest William was from the Stogumber Shaddocks.

He died August 14, 1672 in Watertown, Middlesex, Massachusetts[4]. He married SUSANNA UNKNOWN 1642. She died December 11, 1686 in Watertown, Massachusetts.

William Shattuck emigrated by 1642.[5] He must have emigrated to this country while in his minority. Nothing is known of him before his arrival in this country, but it is thought that he may have come from either Lancashire, Somersetshire, or Berkshire. It is also conjectured that his father might have died on his passage over or shortly thereafter, and also that he might have been the son of widowDamaris Shattuck, who was admitted to the church in Salem in 1641. He may have been a brother ofSamuel Shattuck as their ages are close and the names in their families are similar.[1/8] However, there is no known evidence connecting him to her or her family.[6]

Samuel Shattuck is believed to be a son of Damaris. He was born about 1620 and died in Salem, MA June 6, 1689, age 69. He first joined the Salem church in 1642. Both he and his mother, widow Damaris, had daughters named Damaris. William, on the other hand, did not name a daughter Damaris.[1/361]

In the first inventory of estates in Watertown, assembled between January and April 1643 (per R.C. Anderson in NEHGR 144:147-150)[7] William had 1) "An Homstall of one acre bounded Southwest with the Common the East with John Clough & the North with William Perry 2) Three acres of upland bounded the North with Joseph Morse the South with William Perry the East with John Clough & the West with the Common".[4/1:66] William had the same holding in the third inventory, taken in 1646.[4/1:145] Note that he did NOT appear in the Divisions of Land between 1636 and April 1638 so all that can be said with certainty is that he was in Watertown before early 1643.[8] This land ownership has been interpreted to say that Shattuck owned land in 1639 but that is not supported. The first existing page of the Watertown "Book of Possessions" says only that courts of 1634, 1635 and 1639 ordered that land records be kept to prove title but that has no bearing on when any individual actually acquired his land.

William married about 1642. The Christian name of his wife was Susanna (some unsourced genealogies say Hayden), but neither her surname, date or place of birth, nor her parentage are known. Susanna remained a widow about 15 months after his death and married on Nov. 18, 1673 Richard Norcross, who survived her. She died Dec. 11, 1686. Richard Norcross was the first grammar school teacher in Watertown.[1/6061] William held several town offices. In 1652 he was chosen to prosecute the orders about hogs and fences[2/1:32] and again in 1660.[2/1:64] He was also the surveyor of highways in 1655, 1664, and 1665.[2/1:42,78,84]

William's occupation was that of a weaver, and at his death he bequeathed his "loom and its appurtenances" to his son William. Agriculture also seems to have been a big part of his life, as it was for many early settlers. He was buried in the old Mount Auburn Cemetery.[1/5960]

William Shattuck's will was dated Aug. 3 and proved Aug. 29, 1672. In it he mentioned his sons Samuel Church, Phillip Shattuck, William Shattuck, four small children, two younger sons Benjamin and Samuel, son John, and wife Susanna. His "loving friends John Coolidge, Jr. and Samuel Livermore" were to be assistants to his wife in the execution of the will, which was witnessed by John Coolidge and John Livermore.[3/4:28] The inventory of the estate was taken August 23, 1672 by John Coolidge, John Livermore, and Thomas Hastings and amounted to 434.19.11. 200 pounds was in real property, the rest in personal property, including 103.17.7 1/2 in money.[3/4:31]

DNA analysis suggest all the Massachusetts Shattucks descend from the Stogumber Shattucks. See The YDNA variations among tested descendants.[11][12]

There are bracketed numbers in the narrative that are unexplained. Does anyone know what they refer to? There are also sources included on this profile that are on the unreliable list for PGM profiles, and while this profile may not fall under the scope of PGM, it is pre-1700 and subject to the same standards. Any objections to their removal? (E.g., Edmund West...)

I have no objections. These were their when the original profile was created or added by someone other than me.

Most of the content attributed to bad sources could be expunged simply by deleting the bit that says "Some say he was from Somerset, England[3][4][5] others say he was born 03 MAY 1628 Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts[6][7][8][9]" and the bit that says "(some say Hayden[12][13])", then removing the source citations to Edmund West, the Millennium File, and AGBI. I think there is, however, a need to say (following Alicia Crane Williams) that there is no evidence that he was the son of widow Damaris Shattuck of Salem. Also, the profile should state that erroneous bits of information giving him a birthplace of Somerset and a wife named Hayden have been propagated extensively on the Internet, but they are not based on any known records.

I believe the parents should be disconnected.

The U.S. and International Marriage Records is not cited in any footnotes, so I think it can be deleted without affecting anything at all. (And I will do so after typing this note.) -- EDITED: This was done by someone else while I was typing this note.

He clearly fits the scope of the Massachusetts Project. I am adding the Massachusetts Project as an additional profile manager to he, and I am PPP-ing the profile (to prevent parents from being re-added once they are removed).

I agree that those parents should be disconnected. And the 14 August birth date probably came from the 14 August death date, so probably should be about 1621, England. If William Shattuck was in Watertown by 1639, seems strange that there don't seem to be any Shattuck listings in Anderson's Great Migration Directory (2015).

Alicia Crane Williams says he was in Watertown by 1643, which is distinctly later than 1639.... He is no longer identified here as a PGM...

I will go disconnect the parents.
