Biography

John Portis, son ofDavid Porteous andElspet Martine, was born in 1627 in Scotland.

Marriage & Children

John marriedJane (Exum) Portis (abt.1645-aft.1707) about 1665 in Northampton, Virginia.[1] Known children include (named in his will):

Land Transactions

  • 1664 - Robert (R) Burwell sells to John Portis all interest in a patent. 9 April, 1664. Teste, John Burwell, Robt. Williamson.[2]
  • 1673 - John Portis Sr., father of Susanna Thomas, together with Henry West, patented 900 acres of land, next to John Sherrer, Sept. 25, 1673. (17c. = 690.)[3]
  • 1674 - John Portis land grant, 376 acres, Isle of Wight (Bk 6, P 521)[2]
  • 1693 - John Portis gives to his dau. Sussannah Thomas, wife of John Thomas, land in the Upper Parish for life, Sussanah was formerly wife to Jno. Frizzell, dec., and if she die before her son Will Frizzell is of age of 18, then his [John Portis'] grandson, Will Frizzell, is to possess it. If Will Frizzell have no heirs then to John Portis' son John Portis, Jr. 6 April 1693. John Bell, John Prime, Edmund Prime.[2]
  • 1693 - John Portis gave land to his eldest son John Portis, 6 April 1693.[2]
  • 1694 - John Portis and wife Jane sell John Jones, Sr., cooper, 100 acres land, 10 Dec. 1694.[2]
  • 1703 - John Portis, and wife, Jane, of L.P, for 850 lbs. tbco. sell to John Portis, Jr., a tract of land -- 25 acres. 8 Mar., 1702-3.[2]
  • On Nov. 22, 1704, Debora Portis, widow of John Portis, Jr., deeded a certain tract of land given by John Portis, Sr., to Susanna wife of John Thomas on April 4, 1693, which was afterwards assigned to John Portis Jr. by John Thomas and his wife. (D. B. 2-238)[3]

In ye name of God amen, the Seaventeenth day of Aprill 1703I John Portis being in perfect mind & memory, doe make this mylast Will & Testamt, in manner & Forme as followeth first Igive & bequeath my Soul into ye hands of almighty God myCreator in hopes of a Joyfull Resurreccon thro ye merrits of myonely Ld & Savior Jesus Christ, in whome I hope for Salvaccon,My Body I committ to ye Earth, to be buried att ye discretionof my Exer, as shall be hereafter named, I doe dispose of myworldly Estate as Followeth

first I give & bequeath to my Sonne John portis One Shilling,besides a porcon I formerly gave him

I give & bequeath unto my Sonne Thomas portis, One Shillingbesides a porcon I formerly gave him

I give & bequeath unto my Daughter Susannah One Shilling besidesa porcon I formerly gave her

I give & bequeath unto my Sonne George portis, One little Ironpott, & pott hookes & pott hangers, One Bell mettle spice morter& pestle, One Iron Spitt & ffender, two deep dishes, One Bason,One Iron pestle, One sett of Iron Wedges, one small Table & oneffeather bed, Bedstead & furniture & Three Cowes & Calves.

I give & bequeath unto my loveing Wife Jane, all ye rest of mypersonall Estate, besides what I have already given, I doe alsoegive unto my sd Wife, all my Land dureing her naturall life, Andafter her decease, I doe give & bequeath all my foresd Land, tomy Sonne George portis to him & his heires for ever.I doe ordein & appoint my loveing Wife Jane portis, to be my whole& sole Exer of this my last Will & Testamt, In witness whereofI have hereunto sett my hand & fixed my seal, the day & yearfirst above written.
