Descendants of James Phillips

Biography
James Philips born at Newport Rhode, Island about 1695, son of William Philips andChristiana Barker.[1];
He marriedHope Fish, born about 1699, daughter of John and Joanna (___) Fish about 1717. James was a cordwainer and yeoman. The family resided in the section of Newport that was set off as Middletown in 1746.[1]
- 1722: May 1: James along with his brothers Israel and Micheal were all made Freeman at Newport.[1]
- 1725: May 4: James purchased 7 acres of meadow land from Jonathan and Elizabeth Nichols forL239.[1]
- 1733; January 9: 6 1/2 more acres from Nichols forL396.[1]
His father William Philips died in the mid to late 1720's, but many related records were lost when a ship carrying them sunk in New York Harbor. Jonathan Nichols administered his estate, and the legacies surviving included distribution ofL669: 14: 2 with James and his brothers receivingL52 each.[1]
Hope's father John Fish of Dartmouth, in his will written on April 4, 1737, left a legacy ofL50 to daughter Hope Philips, wife of James, to be paid at the death of her mother.[2] Her mother Joan Fish left her son-in-law James Philips 'the little box I keep my writings in' in her will dated April 5, 1744.[3]
James died at Middletown, Rhode Island between December 25, 1754 when he wrote his will, and July 5, 1755, when his estate was inventoried. He left legacies to:[1]

- Thomas Gould to be executor[1]
His widow Hope died before November 15, 1773, when her estate was inventoried.[1]
Children
- Barbara born on September 17, 1718[4] ; died before 1704; married George Martin at Middletown on March 29, 1739.[5][1]
- Patience born on June 6, 1723[4]; died in 1800 at Swansea, Massachusetts; married Job Edy of Swansea, at Middletown on December 9, 1745.[5][1]
- James Jr. born on November 14, 1727[4]; died at Coventry, Rhode Island after 1800; married Alice Brown at Middletown on March 19, 1752.[5][1]
- Anne born on February 2, 1729[4]; died unmarried at Middletown between the writing of her will on December 4, 1791 and January 15, 1794, when it was proved.[1]
