Biography
A political philosopher, the close associate of the political philosopher Jeremy Bentham, James Mill was the father of the eminent philosopher and member of Parliament, John Stuart Mill. He was educated at Montrose Academy. From 1790 to 1794, he was a student at Edinburgh University. In 1798, he was licensed to preach in the Scottish Church, but had by that time become an atheist.
Mill emigrated to London in 1802. Before Mill attained executive office in the East India Company, to generate income he frequently contributed to journals, even to periodicals of a conservative stripe. Mill’s great work was his three volume History of British India (1818). Its acknowledged value led to his first steady employment, in 1819, when obtained a junior position at the East India Company as assistant examiner of India correspondence. By the 1830s he was a senior executive at the Company, drawing the substantial salary of £2000.
James married Harriet Burrow on 18 June 1805 at Old Church, Saint Pancras, London, England.[1]
A Radical in his politics, Mill befriended Bentham in about 1808. One of the concrete products of their cooperation was the founding in 1823 of the eminent political-literary periodical the Westminster Review (ceased publication in 1914).
The excellent entry on Mill in the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy has an extensive bibliography (https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/james-mill/)
