Biography
A noted politician of the time, Klemens Wenzel Nepomuk Lothar, often called Klemens Metternich or Klemens von Metternich, was the prince of Metternich-Winneburg-Beilstein. He served as foreign minister of the Austrian Empire from 1809 and First State Chancellor of the Austrian Empire from 1821 until he resigned in 1848, and was granted the title of Prince in 1813 for his service to the Empire.
He was largely responsible for orchestrating Austria's entry into the War of the Sixth Coalition, and led the Austrian delegation at the Congress of Vienna after Napoleon's exile as Europe was divvied up among powerful states.
The Concert of Europe, a system of Congress and dispute resolution across Europe, is sometimes referred to as the Age of Metternich because of the Austrian power within the German Confederation and Klemens' influence within Austria.
Please note that his title is often used instead of his name, sometimes only parts of his name are used, and anglicised versions of his name appear as well. His full name and title are Klemens Wenzel Nepomuk Lothar, Fürst von Metternich-Winneburg-Beilstein. His name is anglicized as Clemens Wenceslaus Lothair, Prince of Metternich.
He was an important politician and statesman of the early 19th century and leader of theCongress of Vienna.[1]
He was buried in the family crypt in Plass in Bohemia, now Plasy in Czechia.[2]
