Biography

Timothy Hurlbut was born January 16, 1723, the son of Thomas Hurlbut and Rebecca Meekins of Wethersfield Connecticut[1][2][3]

He was a farmer in Wethersfield, and he owned land in Glastenbury received from his father's estate. His name appears in the 1758 Wethersfield catalogue[3]

On October 5, 1757, he married Sarah Clark[4][5][3], and their children included:

  1. Timothy Hurlburt (1758-1838) who married first Mary Robbins and had 14 or 16 children; and married second Olive Caldwell.[5][3][6]
  2. Titus Hurlburt I (1760-1829) who married Sarah Leonard and had 13 children. He moved to Nova Scotia in 1783.[5][3][7][8][9][10]
  3. Sarah Hurlburt (1762 - ) who married Thomas Hollister, son of Stephen and lived in New York.[5][3][11][12]
  4. Philip Hurlburt (1764-1766) who died at age 2.[5][3]
  5. Ruth Hurlburt (1766 - ) who married Elisha Chamberlain and had Henrietta, Eliza, Moriah, Sarah, and John (all died unm.).[5][3][13][14][15][16]
  6. Philip Hurlburt (1769 - ) who died unmarried.[5][3]

Timothy and Sarah "owned the covenant" were recorded as church members in Wethersfield on 3 Sep 1758. Their children Ruth and Philip were baptized on 5 Mar 1758, "on ye mother's right".[17]

Timothy Hurlbut died in August 1773, recorded as being "about 50". His widow Sarah was administratrix of his estate, which was administered May 1, 1780.[18][3]

Notes

According to Henry H. Hurlbut's book, "The Hurlbut genealogy", Sarah remarried first to a Mr. Collins and second to a Mr. Chamberlain. (The wid. Sarah it is said m. (2) a Mr. Collins by whom she had dau, Henrietta, Mr. Collins, d. and his wid., m. (3) Mr. Chamberlain, whose son by a previous m. became the husband of Ruth, the dau. of his third wife Sarah. [#5 above])[3]

According to Alfred Andrews, author of "Genealogical History of John and Mary Andrews, who Settled in Farmington, Conn., 1640", Sarah Clark the widow of Timothy Hurlburt married Elijah Andrews, son of Dr. Joseph Andrews, on 22 Nov 1774. (ELIJAH ANDREWS, third son of Dr. Joseph, of Newington, and his wife, Sarah ... His wife, Phebe, died 13th Nov., 1772, the same day her daughter, Phebe, was born, when second, he married 22d Nov., 1774, Sarah Clark, then the widow of Timothy Hurlburt, of Wethersfield, deceased. Timothy and Sarah were married 5th Oct., 1757, and had six children, when her husband, Timothy, died, and she married Elijah Andrews, as above. She was administratrix on her first husband's estate.)[19][20] Elijah passed away on 3 Sep 1792.[21]
