Biography

The parents of James Hill emigrated from Ireland to Eramosa Township, Upper Canada (Ontario), in 1829. James continued to farm on the family land until 1848 when he opened an inn in Rockwood.[1]

James and Ann Dunbar Hill had four children.

  • James, the first , was born in 1834, but died shortly after birth.
  • Mary Elizabeth was born December 15, 1835. She married John

Brooks, a neighboring farmer, and died June 25, 1875. They had 13 children.

  • James Jerome Hill was born September 16, 1838.
  • Alexander Samuel Dunbar Hill was born September 6, 1839. He married Emma Day and had four sons, of whom three grew to manhood.

All of the children were born in a log house that was built by their father on fifty acres of land that had been split off from the original two hundred acres owned by James and Mary Riggs Hill .[2]

James Hill was a Baptist and Ann Dunbar a Methodist. The children were however raised asQuakers, since the community was largely Quaker.
