In 1860, Hill was living in Hopefield Township, Crittenden County, Arkansas, near the Mound City post office. He worked as a ferryman.[2]

With the outbreak of the Civil War, Hill enlisted in the Confederate Army on May 1, 1863, joining Company G of the 1st Arkansas Cavalry (Dobbin's) Regiment as a Captain.[3][4][5]

On November 30, 1864, he was captured in Crittenden County, Arkansas. Initially sent to Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee, he was then transferred to Johnson's Island Military Prison in Sandusky County, Ohio, on January 12, 1865. Just four days later, on January 16, 1865, he died while imprisoned.[6][7]
