George Brummell is Notable.

George Bryan Brummell was born on 7 June 1778 and was baptised at St Margaret Westminster on the 2nd of July. He was the youngest child ofWilliam Brummell and his wife,Mary Richardson.[1]

George from a young age paid attention to his dress, in 1790 when he attended Eton, he was called 'Buck' Brummell, when at Oxford were he was an undergraduate at Oriel College, he also become know for his wit.[2]

In 1794 the Prince of Wales gave him a commission in the Prince own regiment. In 1978 he had reached the rank of Captain, he left the service.[2]

George inherited a sizable fortune from his father in 1799[2] George become an iconic figure in Regency England and for many years the arbiter of men's fashion. At one time he was a close friend of the Prince Regent, the future King George IV, but after the two quarrelled, and Brummell got into debt, he had to take refuge in France He left on the shores of England on the 16 May 1816, he remained in debt despite his friends financial help and being appointed as British Consul in Caen for two years 1830 - 1832[2]. Eventually in 1835 he was imprisoned and rescued by friends. In 1837 after attacks of paralysis he was found a place in a charitable asylum of Bon Sauveur, Caen[2] he died shabby and insane in Caen.

George Brummell was featured in works by Georgette Heyer.

Brummell was remembered afterwards as the preeminent example of the dandy and a whole literature was founded upon his manner and witty sayings which has persisted to this day. His name is still associated with style and good looks, and it has been given to a variety of modern products to suggest their high quality.[3]

George Bryan Brummell died on the 30 March 1840 his death was registered in Caen, Departement du Calvados, Basse-Normandie, France. He is buried in Cimetière Protestant, Caen, Departement du Calvados, Basse-Normandie, France.

He was portrayed byJohn Barrymore in the 1924 film "Beau Brummell" and byStewart Granger in the 1954 film of the same name.[4]
