Disputed Spouse
This profile of Rev. Ebenezer Brookings, Jr. previously showed him as the second husband of the widow Hannah (Paine) Sprague, marrying in 1796. This was erroneous: Rev. Brookings' only wife, Mary (Bullen) Brookings bore their son Benjamin in 1797,[1] and she was still alive at the time of the 1800 census -- the year after Rev. Brookings's death -- when she was specifically shown as "Wido Mary Brookins". Hannah (Paine) Sprague was the second wife of the senior Ebenezer Brookings -- not of his son.
Biography
Ebenezer Brookings, Jr., was born at Woolwich, then part of Georgetown, Massachusetts Bay -- later, Maine -- in mid-May of 1756, a son of Ebenezer Brookings and Miriam (Bartow) Brookings; a Baptist minister, he married Mary Bullen, at Woolwich (which had become a distinct town in 1759, separating from Georgetown; the union was recorded in both places), two days before Christmas of 1779. He died at Woolwich in mid-February of 1799.
