Biography
Mary Brookings was born at Woolwich, Massachusetts (later, Maine) in early September of 1795, a daughter of Rev. Ebenezer Brookings, Jr., and Mary (Bullen) Brookings; she married French immigrant stonemason Joseph Gazet, from a village near Lyon, at Boston near the close of November, 1816. She died at Newcastle, Maine, in mid-September of 1874.
Research notes
The birth date shown in "Maine Births and Christenings" (originally found in a genealogy athttp://www.geocities.ws/kasblinn/BrookingsPage1.html) is September 4, 1795; while it is conceivable that this might be the date of a much-delayed christening, the two extant records indicate a birth, not a baptism. The Nathan Hale Cemetery Collection, and Mary's Find A Grave memorial, show a birth year of 1792, presumably calculated from the age shown on Mary's gravestone. Gravestone inscriptions are, however, known to merely estimate, and frequently exaggerate, the age of older persons.
It is possible that the alternative birth date of 15 Sept. 1793, found in the family tree cited in the Sources below, was based on a mistranscription of "1795" (and 15 Sept. might then be a christening date). This tree was created by now-deceased family member Clifton Walker of Alna, Maine, who had immediate access to family letters and documents that are presumed to have been lost in a 2007 fire that destroyed the historic Walker homestead in Alna.
