Genealogical Interests
Communication Preferences:I am interested in communicating withcousins and anyone else with an interest in genealogy.
Here ismy family tree.
My particular interest at the moment is the evolution of families from Saint Helena and Tristan da Cunha. My 6g grandmother,Sophy was taken to Saint Helena as a slave by the Honourable East India Company. Her granddaughter,Sarah Bowers relocated to Tristan da Cunha as part of a wife purchase agreement, from where the family branched out to Australia, South Africa and the USA. Family members took part in the Napoleonic Wars, the American Civil War and the Boer War on both sides.
Secondary interest is the Learmonth and King families of Perthshire, Scotland. King family members departed Perthshire in the years following the last Jacobite uprising, which may have been purely co-incidental, and were early settlers in New Zealand and Australia.

Biography
Names never really meant anything to me.
I just took them for granted.
My first names, Steven John; the ‘v’ in Steven sounded right, so why would I question it ? John fits perfectly with Steven and sounds just right for a name. So, do these two names define me ? I don’t think so. There’s no other Steven or John in the family that I’m aware of, so I’m not named after anyone. They just make me identifiable and because there’s no-one that I’m named after, they make me unique.
My last name of Bicknell, what does it do for me ? Nothing that stands out at first, it just links me to my parents, my brothers and my sisters - doesn’t feel right to call them my siblings, that feels a bit distant.
So, Steven John Bicknell. That’s my name and I’m content with it. Does it mean anything ?
I don’t think so.
Does it define my character, or my future ?
I don’t think so.
That’s my name and I’m content with it.
But apparently, it wasn’t always my name.
At 23 years of age, I decided to join the Royal Australian Air Force and train as a Radio Technician Ground. Age was OK, educational history was not great, but OK. Intellect and character attributes were apparently OK. All I needed was a birth certificate to prove my birth place and nationality.
I’m still content with my name but I don’t take it for granted any more.
Oral history is important. I knew from oral history (my mother told me) that I was born in New South Wales, Australia in the 1950's, the day after Christmas. My mother told me that I was born in the back of an ambulance, parked on the verge of the Mudgee Highway, on the way to Portland Hospital. From this point back, oral history didn’t always agree with the documented records.

After reading your interests, I would suggest you focus on the Stewarts of Kincardine for your Stewart families in St. Helena. Feel free to contact me if you wish.

I am interested on getting information on how they ended up there and were they slaves or servants? I am looking for any history. Many thanks Glenn Pearson
I came across a couple of your profiles as I was researching Thomas Hill Applegatehttps://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Applegate-3291, recently created as an extension of my family by marriage. I've added his profile link to a couple of your profiles - I'm not sure if there are any more where he's mentioned.
I know very little about him, so if you have any other info, please feel free to add it!
Gill
Not wishing to cause anybody stress in their family research, I will adjust the surnames of Saint Helena slaves that I have identified to avoid possible distress. Each of those profiles will be listed and maintained under the Category 'Saint Helena'.
I know that you are working in a different area, thus theUS Black Heritage Naming Conventions for Slaves doesn't apply. I just wanted to mention this and see if you had touched base withthe US Black Heritage project.
Thanks very much for your suggestion. My first intention was just to get the Saint Helena slaves who had been 'baptised' listed in a form that was trackable, so I could follow subsequent marriages and births but I hadn't fully considered naming conventions, as there didn't appear to be any consistency in the Saint Helena records. I will certainly have a look at the US Black Heritage project for comparisons/suggestions, etc. Thanks for your interest.Steve B.
Primary sources should always be added to pre-1700 profiles at the time they are created. If you don't have a source for a pre-1700 profile, it would be best to ask for help in the G2G forumbefore creating the profile. This page onSources can help with the proper formatting. Thanks, Laura
I stand chastised. Is there a particular profile you're concerned about or are you worried about all of the pre 1700 profiles I've created ?Steve B.
I have redone the pre-1700 certification test and checked all the links.

Thank you for self-certifying for the Pre-1700 badge! Participation in aPre-1700 Project is strongly encouraged for those wishing to edit Pre-1700 profiles. Collaboration is essential because pre-1700 ancestors are shared by many descendants.
It looks like theEngland Project would be a good fit with the tag you entered. Adding the tag England will help you get updates about activity for that project.
Do you have any questions? Let me know. I'm happy to help! :-)
