James Benjamin "Ben" Beaty was born on April 09, 1842 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, United States. His parents wereJames Morris Beaty andLucy Davenport.

Ben appeared with his parents and siblings in the 1850 Census in the Paw Creek section of Mecklenburg County. HIs father was a farmer with real estate valued at $2000 (worth about $81,000 in 2024). James had attended school during the census year along with his next three older male siblings.[1]

On 5 July 1860, census enumerator John Phelan found the Beaty family living in Paw Creek. Apparently, Ben's father had accumulated substantial wealth in the last ten years. James' real estate was worth $5920 (approximately $225,148.30 in 2024) and a personal estate value of $2000 (approximately $76,063.61 in 2024). Ben was listed as a laborer, most likely on his father's farm.[2]

Ben enlisted in the Confederate Army on 9 December 1864 and joined many of his neighbors in the same unit, Company C., 10th North Carolina Artillery, Army of Northern Virginia. Ben's service was short. He was present only four months later at the surrender at Appomattox Courthouse where he was paroled 9 April 1865.

Ben, along with W. F. Cathey, procured a bond to marryFrances "Fannie" Smith on 12 February 1867. The rites of matrimony took place on 21 February 1867 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, W. A. Cathey, justice of the peace, presiding.[3]

Over the course of their marriage, Ben and Fannie would eventually produce six children:

  1. Lundy Eugenia Beaty
  2. William Jasper Beaty
  3. Leeroy A. Beaty
  4. Amelia Adeline Beaty
  5. Amos Horatio Beaty
  6. Edward Craig Beaty

By 1987, Ben and Fannie had established a home of their own. On 2 September of that year, Assistant Marshall H. W. Pritchard enumerated the small family of two adults and two children living in Paw Creek Township on a farm. The value of Ben's farm was listed as $35 (worth about $843 in 2024).[4]

Ben was 38 in 1880 when the 1880 census listed him and his family, consisting of his wife, Fannie, and seven children (ages one to 12) living in Paw Creek Township on 11 June of that year. He was working in a flour mill (not farming as in the past).[5]

He died on December 15, 1883, in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. He was buried at the Paw Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery near to plot of his parents and among a host of relatives.[6]

Ben apparently died without a will, but his estate records are sparce. After Ben's death, his son, Wiliam Jasper Beaty, applied for guardianship of his minor siblings on 26 January 1891 and gave oath of this on 23 July of the same year.[7]
