Following a failed pro-Nazi coup in June, Iraqi riots exploded into a pogrom known as the Farhud that killed, raped, robbed and looted the properties of thousands of Baghdad Jews.Farhud—a word which loosely translates to “devour” or “gobble” in Arabic—launched what would become a mass exodus of Jews from Iraq, as the storied 2,500-year-old Jewish community fled increasingly restrictive discriminatory laws accompanied by terrifying and repeated outbreaks of mass violence and state-sponsored show trials.
