LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - The United States Army Corps of Engineers said the nearly one million square feet Robley Rex VA Medical Center in Louisville, is now closer to completion.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers partnered with the Veteran’s Administration to transform the 34-acre site off Brownsboro Road four years ago.

The $840 million center will offer everything from emergency room services to mental health care support to an estimated 45,000 military veterans in and around the Commonwealth.

“It’s going to offer at least 36 different specialized skill care specialty areas for the men and women who served our nation,” said Ben Bruder, with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Bruder added multiple construction teams are working nearly around-the-clock to get the facility, which replaces the current 75-year-old current VA Center off Zorn Avenue, completed by 2026.

Developers said it’ll still take months after that to install lab equipment, along with computer systems, and hospital, and surgical room necessities.

“The doctors, nurses, clinicians, and support teams that will be part of the new state-of-the-art center will be specially trained and in-tune with the nuances and skills needed to care for veterans. This won’t be like your typical hospital, there will be the use of lots of natural light, plus soothing color palettes throughout the massive structure that will also provide parking for 2,600 hundred vehicles. “As soon as you walk in, you’re met with open, natural light and through the concourse area with all the skylights, and in addition to all of the terrace areas, so when you are on the second, third, or fourth floor, you don’t have to go downstairs to get some fresh air, ” added USACE spokesperson Dave Kopecky.

Kopecky said while the new facility will replace the existing one, it’s not clear whether the Zorn Avenue location will be demolished or repurposed.
