The 25 best movie musicals of the 21st century
From “Les Mis” to “La La Land,” from “Walk Hard” to “Wicked,” these films show that the musical genre isn’t just standing – it’s got new moves, too.

Gotta sing! Gotta dance! The movie musical has been with us for as long as movies have had sound, and despite some rough patches over the past century, it has taken on new life in the current millennium, with Broadway adaptations and original screen musicals playing to full multiplexes and winning major awards. The hits keep on coming: “Wicked” is already the No. 1 stage-to-screen transfer in movie history. (Adjusted for inflation, 1963’s “The Sound of Music” still leads the pack.) Another one, “Emilia Pérez,” is up for 13 Academy Award nominations this year.Anotherrecent one, Joshua Oppenheimer’s “The End,” shows that the genre still has experimental possibilities, too. Coming later this year? More “Wicked.”
