Shirley is going to yet another school for misfits. FromGreendale toHollywood Arts,Yvette Nicole Brown is guest-starring on theVictoriousspinoff coming to Netflix. Brown joins Daniella Monet in a video lip-syncing lines from the OG show in an October 23 announcement. Brown played the, um, outspoken theater manager Helen Dubois in bothVictoriousandDrake & Josh. Daniella Monet leads the show as Trini Vega, older sister ofVictoriousmain character Tori Vega (Victoria Justice). On the original, Trini was characterized as untalented and attention-grabbing. Seems things haven’t changed all that much in 20 years, as she’s returning to Hollywood Arts “an unqualified substitute teacher,” per the logline. Trini quickly starts “clashing with and unexpectedly inspiring a new generation of ambitious and talented students as they learn to find their true path at Hollywood’s most elite performing arts school.” The new generation includes Alyssa Miles (Hanging out with Alyssa and Xavier), Emmy Liu-Wang (Raven’s Home),Peyton Jackson (The Woman in the Yard),Erika Swayze (School Spirits), and Martin Kamm (Web of Spider-Man).
It’s not yet known if any otherVictoriousstars will be returning to their old high school. Besides Monet and Justice, the show helped birth the careers of Ariana Grande, Elizabeth Gillies, Leon Thomas III, and Avan Jogia. Victoria Justice seems the easiest to write intoHollywood Arts, as she’s the new lead’s little sister. But we’ve seen reboots carry along quite happily withoutcertain blood relations returning.
ThoughVictoriouswas one of many series created byDan Schneider, whosealleged misconduct on those shows was the focus ofQuiet on Setand who also came up inSam & Catstar Jennette McCurdy’s memoir,I’m Glad my Mom Died, Schneider stopped working with Nickelodeon in 2018 and, according toDeadline, has no involvement withHollywood Arts.Jake Farrow and Samantha Martin are showrunning the spinoff, with Monet serving as an EP.
As for why a Nickelodeon spinoff is going to Netflix and not Paramount+ or cable, well, those verticals will likely still get around to airingHollywood Arts. After Netflix’s exclusive release, the show has a second window on Nickelodeon and Paramount+. Per Deadline, this order of events came after the Paramount-Skydance merger. Which means things could still get even more complicated if Paramount buys HBO Max before 2026, whenHollywood Artsmakes its streaming debut. Let’s get Helen in there to talk some sense.
