South Carolina is a destination with history, culture, character, amazing landscapes and terrain, and definite Southern charm.
There is something for everyone here: pretty, sandy beaches; enchanting state parks; golf courses (which if you’ve never played before, will make you want to take up the game); historic plantations and architecture; some of the best dining available; and all kinds of attractions and modern entertainment.
South Carolina’s Coastal Destinations
My first stop was the oldest city inSouth Carolina, Charleston. Pedestrian-friendly,Charleston boasts historic plantations and pre-Civil War homes, known as Antebellum houses, as well as top golf courses and restaurants, fun water sports on the beach, and reedy marshes and creeks. It's easy to see why it is one of the top destinations in America.
My next stop wasMyrtle Beach, an exciting city with great shopping and modern attractions. I explored WonderWorks, an interactive science museum, as well as went zip lining, visited Ripley’s Aquarium, enjoyed plenty of waterfront dining and rode the famous Skywheel with brilliant views of the beautiful Atlantic coastline. Myrtle Beach also offers more than 100 great golf courses and a myriad of water sports for everyone to enjoy.
The last of my coastal cities to visit wasHilton Head Island, which is one of the most popular boating destinations in the United States. Hilton Head Island is known for its sustainable living and world-class golf at the famous Harbour Town Golf Links, which hosts South Carolina’s PGA Tour golf event, the RBC Heritage. Hilton Head Island offers a slightly more laid-back, upscale atmosphere that will leave you feeling completely relaxed and rejuvenated.

Small Towns & Urban Landscapes
South Carolina’s inland cities also offer plenty for visitors. In Columbia, the state's capital and largest city, you will find fantastic culture with museums, art galleries, the 170-acre Riverbanks Zoo, Lake Murray (a boating favourite) and the historic State House, which houses the South Carolina legislature.
Camden, which is the oldest inland city in South Carolina, offers quaint historic homes and some of the best antiques shopping I’ve come across. It is also home to a historic Revolutionary War site and the site of the Civil War Battle of Camden.
Greenville is a vibrant, charming city in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. The thriving downtown offers more than 90 restaurants and pubs, many with outdoor dining. The spectacular Falls Park on the Reedy River is one of the most picturesque places I’ve visited and is perfect for a picnic, hike or bike ride. I started my first day in Greenville with a morning walk across the Liberty Bridge and stopped to soak up the views of beautiful nature.
No matter what you are looking for in a holiday destination, South Carolina really does have it all. If you want to take your next holiday to a place where you will feel welcome while working on your tan, bicycling on the beach, playing golf or tennis at top sports clubs, soaking up culture and history, and eating some of the best food the country has to offer – then you now know where to go!
