Badlands National Park: The name doesn't do justice to gorgeous landscape

Tens of millions of years ago, after layers of sediment – sand, silt and clay – grew in increments, streams and rivers fueled erosion, creating distinctive rock layers of tan, brown, gray, yellow and black, from the peaks to the canyon floor at Badlands National Park. While these geologic wonders attract visitors, the 98,700-hectare park is also home to a mixed-grass prairie that thrives on the clay soil and supports more than 400 species of plants in addition to wildlife, including mammals, reptiles, birds and insects. Hike, bicycle or drive through the park to catch a glimpse of them.

          Visit Badlands National Park

The rugged beauty of Badlands National Park, located in southwesternSouth Dakota, makes this park a must see when visiting the United States. Not only are the sharp buttes and gradient rocks stunning to look at, they’re also quite a treasure trove of fossils.

Today, Badlands is home to incredible wildlife, including bison, bighorn sheep, prairie dogs and black-footed ferrets. Keep your eyes peeled for them as you traverse the striated buttes and follow one of the many hiking trails. For excellent views of the landscape, follow the 1-kilometer Door Trail or the ½-kilometer Window Trail — both of which are great for hikers of all skills. Badlands National Park also boasts opportunities to camp and stargaze.
