A natural haven just south of Washington, D.C.

Despite its proximity to the nation’s bustling, urban capital, Shenandoah is a little piece of paradise in Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains. Blessed with more than 60 peaks, 100 species of trees and countless animal species, it’s the crowning glory of the Appalachian range. But this long, narrow strip of concentrated nature is perhaps best known for its knockout scenery, with millions flocking to it –particularly in spring and fall – to witness the kaleidoscope of blooming flowers and changing leaves.

Just 120 kilometers from the bustle of Washington, D.C., Shenandoah National Park is your escape. Cascading waterfalls, spectacular vistas, quiet wooded hollows — take a hike, meander along Skyline Drive or picnic with the family. More than 800 square kilometers of protected lands are haven to deer, songbirds and lots of other interesting animals.

Whether you have an hour, a day or a week, you can plan a great visit to Shenandoah National Park. Even if you are just passing through the region, use Skyline Drive for a portion of your route. This winding road weaves through the park’s forested peaks; along the way you will see the beautiful vistas Shenandoah is known for. The park also features more than 800 kilometers of hiking paths, with trails like the Old Rag trail affording spectacular views of the mountains.
