My first stop was Brandenburg Bakery in the sleepy little town of Livingston Manor, which had freshly baked, mouth wateringly tasty German pastries. What little self-control I had was taken over by my sense of smell as I walked across the bakery’s threshold. Pastries, cakes, freshly baked breads and biscuits – I’d have to have one of each, please! I then walked down the street to pick up a sandwich from Main Street Farm Market and Café for my lunch: Prosciutto, fresh Mozzarella, roasted red peppers, baby rocket, Balsamic vinegar, all served up on Ciabatta.

Fly Fishing USA – To Net or Not to Net, That is the Question

The Catskills provide some of the best angling spots in the country and with pristine lakes and fast-running rivers, what better place to start than at the Catskill Fly Fishing Center and Museum, to learn about the origins of fly-fishing?

From here, great places to explore include the tiny hamlet of Roscoe in Sullivan County, or Hancock, also known as “The Gateway to the Delaware River.” Be just like Brad Pitt in “A River Runs Through It”, and cast out a line to see what you can find. The good news is that the majority of places in this region practice “catch and release” guidelines, so there’s a plentiful supply of fish just waiting for you to reel them in.

Paddling Fun

In addition to fishing, both the Hudson and Delaware rivers are known for their spectacular kayaking and canoeing. I headed over to Lander’s River Trips at Skinner’s Falls to go kayaking on the Delaware River. The currents were strong and the water flowed briskly as I paddled along.

If you’re looking for the ultimate day of fun-filled water activities, why not try both fishingand kayaking and visit Pepacton Reservoir? Bring along a picnic, take a break from your leisurely paddle through the pristine waters, and throw out a fishing line to test your angling skills. Or hike Shavertown Trail, which overlooks the reservoir.

At the day’s end, before heading to the Inn at Lake Joseph, I stopped by the Catskill Brewery to pick up a growler, or container, of beer for the evening. This is a brand new craft brewery in Livingston Manor that is fast becoming popular with the locals.

After checking in at the Inn at Lake Joseph, I took a rowing boat out and watched the sun set in the distance. It was so peaceful, with just the sound of the oars cutting slowly through the still water. With the whirlpool bath in my bedroom, along with a cosy fireplace, it was safe to say I was ensconced in my own little part of paradise. Early the next morning, I took a stroll down to the lake with my coffee and watched a dozen or so deer hanging out in the woodlands.

I can’t wait to return to the Catskills during the winter months, strap some snow-shoes onto my feet and see where the pathways take me. Be sure to include the Catskills inNew York on your next U.S.-bound holiday.
