Tribute to the history of a young nation

The Washington, D.C. landscape extending from the U.S. Capitol Building and White House to the banks of the Potomac River is both a place of reflection and remembrance and one to marvel at the history of a young nation. Visitors to the National Mall and Memorial Parks will find more than 80 historic structures and 150 parks, squares, circles and triangles in about 405 hectares of green space.

Here there are memorial monuments to U.S. presidents, including Abraham Lincoln, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Thomas Jefferson, and to those who lost their lives serving the country during World War I, World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. A sculpture of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. honors his legacy.

Standing tall above it all is the Washington Monument, a 169-meter marble obelisk. From the ground floor, take a 70-second elevator ride 149 meters up to see museum exhibits and view the surrounding cityscapes.

Within sight is the Reflecting Pool that connects the iconic Lincoln Memorial and World War II Memorial. Take a leisurely stroll around the serene pool, which is about 618 meters long and 51 meters wide.

Join a free park ranger-guided tour to get the most out of the experience. For a different view, steer a paddleboat around the Tidal Basin and admire the famous cherry trees, which were initially given to the American people in 1912 as a gift from the mayor of Tokyo City. The pink blossoms flower each spring.
