Dr. Sumit Som

Dr. Sumit Som, Distinguished Scientist, has been appointed as Director, Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre (VECC) with effect from 14th January, 2020 and before that he was serving as Acting Director, VECC with effect from 1st June 2019.

  • Thallium-201 radioisotope has been successfully produced on 25/01/2021, for the first time in India at VECC Medical Cyclotron Facility by BRIT from Thallium-203 target irradiated with 28 MeV, 50uA proton beam.

  • A major milestone of K500 Superconducting Cyclotron has been successfully achieved by accelerating and extracting out first harmonic Nitrogen4+ beam (252 MeV) from the machine.

  • Gallium-68 isotope has been successfully produced from solid target of Zinc-68, in Medical Cyclotron facility at Chakgaria campus of VECC, Kolkata, on August 14, 2020.

  • Sulphur10+ beam has been successfully accelerated and extracted from K130 Cyclotron at VECC, for the first time on 17th June, 2020.

  • Gallium-67-citrate has been successfully produced from solid target of Zinc-68, in Medical Cyclotron Facility at Chakgaria, Kolkata.

  • Nitrogen 2+ beam successfully extracted from VECC K500 Superconducting Cyclotron.

Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre(VECC) is situated in the city of Kolkata (Calcutta). Kolkata is well connected by both air and rail routes with all the major cities of India.VECC is about 12 kms. from the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport and Howrah Station from where buses and prepaid taxis are available to reach the Centre (Bus stopage: CAP camp or Baisakhi.)
