In Conclusion

TheLittle Gold Men team gathered early Monday morning to discuss the highs and lows — but mostly highs! — of the 2023 Oscars. As David Canfield wrote in his summary of the awards, “the Academy seemed to listen to its critics and try to meet a rapidly changing moviegoing public where it’s at. They could’ve done worse than deliver a historic night to the movie that, in more ways than one, defined American cinema in 2022.”

The Story Behind Hong Chau’s Custom Prada Look

Hong Chau has an eye for detail—like the tattoos she requested for her Oscar-nominated turn in The Whale, even if they didn’t make it on camera. (Makeup department head Judy Chin hand-drew a tattoo design of two koi fish: “A larger one for Charlie and a smaller one for Alan, and they were kind of wrapped around each other. It was so beautiful,” Chau told Vanity Fair.

Her custom Prada look for the Oscars was another moment for storytelling, by way of a mandarin collar she noticed in the Italian label’s spring 1997 collection. “I was like, ‘I don't know if you’re going to be very offended by this, but I just wanted to incorporate my roots a little bit,’” said Chau, whose parents left postwar Vietnam before settling in New Orleans. The result—pink satin, a darkly shimmering rectilinear train, and that collar—was something of a self-portrait in Prada.

Identifying History

This year'sbest actress winner,Michelle Yeoh ofEverything Everywhere All at Once, is the first Asian woman to take the category, and only the second non-white winner (Halle Berry was the first). If you've noticed Yeoh being described in some outlets as the “first self-identifying Asian” woman to win and wondered why some are making that specific designation, you may be interested in reading up on Merle Oberon and the secret that she took to her grave.

A star of Hollywood's Golden Age, Oberon was nominated for Best Actress in 1935 forThe Dark Angel. Though no one knew it at the time, she was the first nominee of South Asian descent in the category. Oberon was actually born in Bombay, India in 1911 and was of Anglo-Indian descent, but, afraid of how her heritage could work against her in the rigid structures of Hollywood, she lied that she'd been born in Tasmania, Australia, and that her birth records had been destroyed in a fire. In fact, it appears that Oberon only visited Australia twice before her death in 1979.

In F. Scott Fitzgerald's unfinished novelThe Last Tycoon, there's a character based on Oberon, named Margo Taft. In a later television adaptation of the story,Jennifer Beals played the part.

The Future of the Oscars?

Sure,Jamie Lee Curtis just won best supporting actress—but she understands the case for doing away with gendered categories in the future. “How do you include everyone when there are binary choices?” she said in the press room after winning her award. “As the mother of a trans daughter, I completely understand that.”

Super, No Thanks for Asking

The official awards ceremony may be over, but the winners for best crowd reaction shots have yet to be decided in the people's court. Your Monday morning mission, should you choose to accept it, is to considerAndrew Garfield's reluctance to accept his own mission of protectingJimmy Kimmel from would-be attackers during the ceremony. Spiderman may just….stay in the web for this one, thanks.
