Black Panther has been out for months, but fans evidently have yet to crack all of its mysteries. Aneagle-eyed Redditor recently uncovered a secret that’s been right in front of our eyes all along. In the film’s end credits, as noted bycomicbook.com,Trevor Noah is listed as the voice of the character “Griot”—better known as the sleek, Shuri-invented A.I. system that guidesMartin Freeman’s character in a virtual plane during the battle scene. The word “griot” is a West African term for a storyteller. Representatives for Noah confirmed toVanity Fair that he voiced the character.

Landing a role in this smash Marvel movie is a delightful personal victory for Noah. TheDaily Show host is South African, and several characters inBlack Panther speak Xhosa, one of his home country’s official languages.Chadwick Boseman, who plays T’Challa, said he based his character’s voice on the South African accent. Backin February, Noah also praised the film, as well as its ties to his native country.

“It was extra special for me because the people speak Xhosa in the movie,” he said. “There were subtitles, and I was like, I don’t need your subtitles! I don’t need your subtitles! This is just for me right now! Nobody else listen! This reminds me of my mom.”

Ina later interview with Boseman, Noah noted that the film’s “authenticity” resonated with friends of his in South Africa. “People loved it back home,” he said.

A Noah cameo is a deft touch by Marvel, which is known for its fondness for in-jokes like this one. Comic legendStan Lee has notched an appearance in pretty much every Marvel movie so far;Deadpool 2, which was produced by Marvel Entertainment, recently notched one of the best cameo moments in superhero history whenBrad Pitt showed up for approximately two seconds in a funny, blink-and-you’ll-miss-it role. And last year,Matt Damon also popped up inThor: Ragnarok as an actor playing Loki in a play.

But perhaps Noah’s cameo is more in line with the voice appearances that pop up in theStar Wars universe.Bill Hader andBen Schwartz were responsiblefor the voice of BB-8 inStar Wars: The Force Awakens, whileDaniel Craig snuck in a few lines as a pissy Stormtrooper. The Last Jedi was also stuffed with surprising vocal cameos, includingMark Hamill doing double duty as both Luke Skywalkerand an alien named Dobbu Scay.
