Sometimes, life has a particularly cruel way of imitating art.Arnold Schwarzenegger is man enough to admit that—and it’s part of the reason he’s decided to walk away from theExpendables franchise. In a new interview withEntertainment Weekly, Schwarzenegger confirmed he’ll be exiting the fourth installment of the supersize action franchise because he didn’t care for the way his character was treated in the third film.

Initially, the action star said his main reason for leaving is that the franchise’s creator and lead star,Sylvester Stallone, recently announced he’d be parting ways with the project as well.

“There is noExpendables without Sly,” Schwarzenegger said. “I would never do the movie without him, no.” Somewhere out there, a muscular bro double fisting whey-protein shakes is turning this into an inspirational meme, posting it on his ‘gram with the hashtag #Loyalty.

The jumbo-size action franchise kicked off in 2010 and was an immediate blockbuster success, co-starring action heroes likeJet Li,Dolph Lundgren,Jason Statham,Mickey Rourke, and more. Subsequent films have featuredHarrison Ford,Ronda Rousey, andWesley Snipes. Schwarzenegger has appeared in all three of theExpendables films, playing Trench, a beefy rival mercenary for Stallone’s Barney Ross. Though he’s exiting the fourth film, the formerTerminator star and currentDonald Trump sparring partner says he’s still fond of the franchise—or, at least, the first two films. The third one, he says, took its title a little too seriously.

“You know, I think the first and second one were terrific,” Schwarzenegger toldE.W. “But, the third one, I thought my part was not written well. It was also not playing well in the movie, as far as I was concerned. Maybe other people believed differently. But I didn’t believe that I had any value in the movie. Ilove the franchise, by the way. I think it’s a spectacular franchise,The Expendables. I think that Sly has good ideas, what he wants to do with it, and I think if they write a really good script [in] which my part is very well-developed, I would do it. If not, then I won’t do it.”

Stallone recently confirmed that he was leaving the film because he and Nu Image/Millennium chiefAvi Lerner couldn’t agree on “on a new director, on the script and on certain qualitative elements of the film,” according toDeadline. Stallone directed and co-wrote the firstExpendables movie, and co-wrote the next two installments. This franchise is kind of his baby, and he will protect it from anyone . . . especially from formerExpendables starBruce Willis, who ditched the most recent installment after behind-the-scenes drama with Stallone. Willis was replaced by Harrison Ford, and Sly was quick to celebrate the news on Twitter. “WILLIS OUT… HARRISON FORD IN !!!! GREAT NEWS !!!!! Been waiting years for this!!!!” he gleefully wrote. Stallone followed that up with another all-caps tweet: “GREEDY AND LAZY ...... A SURE FORMULA FOR CAREER FAILURE,” he wrote, later confirming that he was indeed referring to Willis.

The action icons have since patched things up, with Stallone sending off a peaceful tweet: “Made up with BRUCE W. A stand up guy, my mistake....” he wrote. Suddenly all was well inExpendablesville—until all the drama surrounding the fourth film. Sure, maybe they’ll never ’gram each other with hashtags like #respect or #brotherhood. But Stallone willalways have the Terminator in his corner. That’s #loyalty.
