How to check your status and view documents

Use our online Trademark Status and Document Retrieval (TSDR) system to check your status and view and download documents. In the search box, enter your application serial number or registration number and select theStatus orDocuments buttons. 

To see if a required maintenance document deadline is coming up, go to TSDR, enter your registration number, and select theMaintenance button next to theStatus andDocuments buttons. You’ll see the next filing deadline and maintenance document type you need to file below “Next maintenance filing required.” 

TSDR also shows information about international registrations and applications for international registration filed under the Madrid system through the United States. 

New documents may not always show up in TSDR immediately, so don’t worry if you don’t see a document in the system on the same day you filed it. 

Contact the Trademark Assistance Center (TAC) if you don’t understand the status displayed in TSDR for your application or registration. 

When to check your status

While your application is pending, we recommend checking the status at least every three to four months between your filing date up until the date your trademark registers.

After your trademark registers,we recommend checking the status at least every three to four months after filing any post-registration maintenance documents, including a declaration of use or excusable nonuse under Sections 8 or 71, and a renewal application under Section 9. Do this until the filing has been accepted.

Why you should check your status

You have a duty to track the status of your application or registration to ensure you submit required forms on time. Here’s what happens if you miss certain deadlines:

If your application is pending and you don’t respond to an office action by the response deadline, your application will abandon. This means your application won’t be active (live), your trademark won’t register, and we won’t refund the fees you paid. If this happens, you have two options:  

• Pay additional fees to revive your application, if eligible, by timely filing a petition. See our webpage on reviving an abandoned application.
• File a new application with a new set of filing fees and start the process all over again.

If your trademark is already registered and you don’t timely file the required maintenance forms and feesor you don’t respond to a post-registration office action (official letter), your registration will be canceled. This means your registration is no longer active (live), and you may not be able to reinstate it.

• If you don’t timely file required maintenance forms and fees, your only option is to start over by filing a new application.
• If you didn’t timely file a response to an office action, you may have the option to file a petition to reinstate the registration under limited circumstances. See TMEP section 1712.02(b) for more information. Otherwise, you need to start over by filing a new application.

Keep track of your deadlines

Keep a copy of the TSDR status screen each time you check your status. This shows you’ve been diligent in monitoring your application or registration. You may need this to support your request for corrective action in your application if you miss a filing deadline.

Create a reminder system for any filing deadlines.

Keep your email address up to date in your application or registration. This ensures you receive our communications. Use theCorrespondence and Attorney Representation form to update your email.

Add the USPTO to your safe senders list. This will ensureyour email filter won’t block our messages to you. We don’t extend filing deadlines even when you don’t receive our messages.
