Elaine Howley began writing for U.S. News in 2017 and has covered a wide range of health topics from nutrition and cancer to senior care issues and fitness. Howley has over two decades of experience.

Prior to writing for U.S. News, Howley worked as Publications Manager forU.S. Masters Swimming and Managing Editor ofSWIMMER magazine. Her freelance work has also appeared in a variety of print and online publications includingTriathlete magazine,AARP.org, theAssociation of American Medical Colleges,iAdvanceSeniorCare, andOutdoor Swimmer magazine based in the United Kingdom.

She is a member in good standing of the American Society of Journalists and Authors, the Association of Health Care Journalists and the National Association of Science Writers. Specializing in health, sports and history topics, Howley has earned several writing awards, including a2022 AAOS MORE Award from the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and the 2023 Buck Dawson Authors Award from the International Swimming Hall of Fame for her work ghostwriting Olympic diver Tom Gompf’s memoir, published byCG Sports Publishing.

A southern New Jersey native, Howley earned a bachelor’s degree from Georgetown University and a master’s degree in publishing and writing from Emerson College in Boston. She currently lives in greater Boston.
