MIAMI, June 3 -- The Miami Dolphins Monday announced the signing of veteran linebacker Jack Del Rio, formerly of the Minnesota Vikings, and the re-signing quarterback Bernie Kosar. The 33-year-old Del Rio is joining his fifth NFL team. He spent the last four years with the Vikings and also has played for the New Orleans Saints, Kansas City Chiefs and Dallas Cowboys in his 11-year career. 'We are extremely happy to sign veteran linebacker Jack Del Rio,' said Dolphins coach Jimmy Johnson. 'Jack is a proven player who I enjoyed coaching with the Cowboys from 1989-91. He is a guy who knows what it takes to win and I look forward to having him in a Miami uniform.' Injuries limited Del Rio to nine games last season and kept him under 100 tackles (70) for the first time in six years. He managed a career- high three sacks, one interception and one fumble recovery before being cut in a salary cap move. Del Rio spent his first two years with the Saints before he was traded to the Chiefs. He was claimed off waivers by the Cowboys in 1989 and spent three seasons in Dallas. Del Rio joined the Vikings as a Plan B free agent in 1992. He led the team in tackles three straight years and made the Pro Bowl in 1994. He will compete for the job at middle linebacker vacated by Bryan Cox, who signed as a free agent with Chicago.

The 32-year-old Kosar completed 74-of-108 passes in nine games last season for 699 yards, three touchdowns and five interceptions. He has played in 132 career NFL games, completing 57 percent of his passes for 25,043 yards and 139 touchdowns. Kosar played his first eight seasons with the Cleveland Browns (1985- 93) before joining Dallas midway through the 1993 campaign. He originally signed as an unrestricted free agent with Miami prior to the 1994 season. Miami also announced the retirement 12-year NFL veteran Ron Heller. The 6-foot-6 offensive tackle started seven games at right tackle in 1995 before having arthroscopic surgery on both knees on Oct. 27. The 33-year-old Heller started 166-of-171 career games. He played his first four years with Tampa Bay, joined Philadelphia for five seasons and signed as an unrestricted free agent in 1993 with Miami.
