Oh I don’t think whites are terrified at all: or at least they are not “terrified” of the prospect of Life Without Monkeymen. It is difficult to overstate the damage done by forced integration. Individuals of every race have natural rights and should have equality under the law. Sadly, that concept of equality was betrayed in order to support a version of equality which demanded that all races perform as a group at the same level in all tasks and outcomes. I spent some years as a youth in a majority Black neighborhood, attending a majority Black school. I have, for various reasons lived in majority Black neighborhoods as an adult. In other words, my opinions are more than mere opinions; they are based on objective observations and personal experience. I was discussing realistic race relations with an acquaintance, a quite bright White guy, but someone who had never spent time around Black culture. High crime? Trash in the streets? Whenever a boxing bout was scheduled, it was perfectly acceptable for the white fans to root for the white boxer and the black fans to root for the black boxer. The slaves were already here when the country was founded. The first American immigration law passed in 1790 was passed with the votes of some of the Founding Fathers. It only allowed White immigrants from Europe. You can point out your perceived inconsistencies but the fact remains the Founders envisioned a White Christian country. Where we wrecked our country was giving all the freed slaves citizenship instead of relocating them, changing immigration laws to allow non-White immigration, and not staunchly protecting our border.

The word “Christian” is absent from any requirement for citizenship, even in the Naturalization Law of 1790. Also, there’s no requirement to be white in order to be a citizen spelled out in the Constitution, and as was pointed out in the minority opinion in theDred Scott case, because niggers were already state citizens and voting in five of the thirteen original states, it’s likely that some of them even voted on the question of whether or not to ratify the Constitution. Once it had been adopted, nothing in that Constitution disenfranchised the niggers or revoked their citizenship. If the Founders had really “envisioned a White Christian country”, as you claim, then they could have included a provision to restrict citizenship to that group in the proposed Constitution, but they didn’t.
Also, there were not a few Jews already present in this country at the time founding. Nothing excluded them either. They, along with free negroes, automatically became US citizens when the Constitution was adopted.
Then too, we have the free thinkers, men like Thomas Paine and Thomas Jefferson. Paine claimed to believe in one God, “but no more”. He wasn’t a member of any church, nor was Jefferson, who made his own Bible cobbled together from the supposed sayings of Jesus. If there had been a religious test for citizenship they probably would have failed it. Many people even today will say that neither man was a Christian.
When the 1790 law says White Europeans, it implies Christianity. The only concern spelled out in the Constitution regarding religion is they did not want the government to endorse a national church like the Church of England. The minuscule number of non-whites who had citizenship at the time is irrelevant to a population that was 99% White and was intended to stay that way into the future. Sorry, they envisioned a White Christian country like it or not.

Exactly. To endorse a national church would entail designating one particular variety of the Jesus hokum as the only “real” Christianity, and anyone not a fan of that particular brand of Jesus juice would have been considered non-Christian. So it was a political decision. By leaving it open, they excluded no one. This is similar to the way they avoided putting a requirement in the Constitution that someone must be white to be a citizen. The Founders were well aware that there were already many mixed-race people, non-Christians, and even freed negroes among the voting populace. They were aware, too, that a considerable number of white people envisioned a future in which an American could be of any race. Thus, there was also no test for being white.

A better way to make your claim would be to say that those Founders, while not necessarily being Christians themselves, all subscribed to a moral framework that had originated in Christianity– the existence of human “rights”, the so-called dignity of man, and the rest of that garbage — and they expected that outlook on the part of the general public to continue. But accepting that moral framework doesn’t imply any particular beliefs about Jesus, or even an acceptance of Christianity. It doesn’t require a belief in Jesus or Christianity at all. Nowadays, even most atheists subscribe to it.

A large majority of the Founders were slave owners, although some were not and opposed slavery. You could just as well state that slave ownership was not a requirement for citizenship, but the Founders envisioned an America that would always be a majority slave-owning country. But there were already rumblings that that wasn’t going to last.

The only thing that was strongly agreed upon and encoded in the Constitution is the idea of “natural rights” and “liberty of conscience”, as George Washington quaintly put it in his message to the Jews of Newport in 1790. It’s an early version of the motto. Here he envisions and applauds a multi-cultural, multi-racial America.
