Charles Benedict Calvert

1859-60

Acting President

Charles Benedict Calvert (1808-64) served as acting president of the Maryland Agricultural College in late 1859 and 1860.

Calvert was founder of the Maryland Agricultural College, president of the Board of Trustees and a well-known philanthropist, planter and congressman.

Enrollment increased under his brief administration, from 35 to 63 students. He established a noncredit preparatory program for applicants who could not meet the college's academic requirements.

He also hired a prominent Washington scientist, Townend Glover, as professor of botany and entomology.
