Python - Array insert() Method

The Python arrayinsert() method is used to insert or add an element at any specified position i.e. index value.

The index value starts from zero. When we insert an element, all the existing elements in the sequence are shifted to the right to accommodate the new element.

Syntax

Following is the syntax of the Python Arrayinsert() method −

array_name.insert(position,element)

Parameters

This method accepts two parameters −

  • position : It represents the index position at which element need to be inserted.
  • element : It represents the value that to be inserted into an array.

Return Value

This method doesn't return any value.

Example 1

The following is the basic example of the Python arrayinsert() method −

import array as arr#Creating an arraymy_array1 = arr.array('i',[10,20,30,40])#Printing the elements of an arrayprint("Array Elements Before Inserting : ", my_array1)element1=100position1=2my_array1.insert(position1,element1)print("Array Elements After Inserting : ", my_array1)

Output

The element1 is inserted at position1 in my_array1. Here is the output −

Array Elements Before Inserting :  array('i', [10, 20, 30, 40])Array Elements After Inserting :  array('i', [10, 20, 100, 30, 40])

Example 2

If the datatype of array and inserted element are not same, then we gettypeerror.

In the following example we have created an array ofint datatype, where we try to insertfloat value −

import array as arr#Creating an arraymy_array2 = arr.array('i',[11,340,30,40])#Printing the elements of an arrayprint("Array Elements Before Inserting : ", my_array2)#element that to be insertedelement2=14.5#position at which element to be insertedposition2=3#insertion of element1 at positionmy_array2.insert(position2,element2)print("Array Elements After Inserting : ", my_array2)

Output

Array Elements Before Inserting : array('i', [11, 340, 30, 40])Traceback (most recent call last): File "E:\pgms\insertprg.py", line 27, in <module> my_array2.insert(position,element1)TypeError: 'float' object cannot be interpreted as an integer

Example 3

If we insert any iterables like tuple or list into an array, we get an error.

Here, we are trying to insert element3 to the arraymy_array3 which is atuple, as a result of which we getting an error −

import array as arr#Creating an arraymy_array3 = arr.array('i',[191,200,330,540])#Printing the elements of an arrayprint("Array Elements Before Inserting : ", my_array3)element3=(10,100,100)position3=2my_array3.insert(position3,element3)print("Array Elements After Inserting : ", my_array3)

Output

Array Elements Before Inserting : array('i', [191, 200, 330, 540])Traceback (most recent call last): File "E:\pgms\insertprg.py", line 53, in <module> my_array3.insert(position3,element3)TypeError: 'tuple' object cannot be interpreted as an integer

Example 4

In this example, we can inserting an element using negative indexing.Lets try to understand with the following example −

import array as arr#Creating an arraymy_array4 = arr.array('i',[11,340,30,40,100,50,34,24,9])#Printing the elements of an arrayprint("Array Elements Before Inserting : ", my_array4)element4 = 878position = -1my_array4.insert(position,element4)print("Array Elements After Inserting : ", my_array4)

Output

Following is the output of the above code −

Array Elements Before Inserting :  array('i', [11, 340, 30, 40, 100, 50, 34, 24, 9])Array Elements After Inserting :  array('i', [11, 340, 30, 40, 100, 50, 34, 24, 878, 9])
