Harald Blüchel (born 19 February 1963 in Nuremberg) is aGerman composer, pianist and music producer. He became one of his mostfamous protagonists in techno music between 1989 and 1999 under theartist name "Cosmic Baby". Since the year 2000 he has moved with hiscompositions mainly in the field of (neo-) classical music.
At the age of seven being a highly-qualified child, he received aneducation as a classical pianist at the Nuremberg Conservatory.Frustrated by the power pressure there, but fascinated by the music ofGerman groups like "Cluster", "Tangerine Dream" and "Kraftwerk", hesoon devoted himself to electronic music.
In 1987, Harald moved to West Berlin and studied composition at the"Hochschule der Künste" (now UdK). In 1988 he entered the circleof the newly emerging techno movement.
With his productions, he created a stylistic sound language thatcan be characterized as a very personal synthesis of drivingarpeggios, superimposed sequencer figures and impressive melodies. Thebest example is the first "Cosmic Baby" album "Stellar Supreme"released in September 1992 by Mark Reeders label "MFS". At the sametime, he set up the project "The Visions of Shiva" with Paul van Dykand published the single "Perfect Day", which quickly became a clubhit. He also co-produced with Mijk van Dijk on "MFS" the very firstmixed Trance-CD: "Tranceformed from beyond".
In 1993, in co-operation with Kid Paul, the trance anthem"Café del Mar" was released under the name of "Energy 52",which became one of the world's most famous pieces of this musicaldirection. In addition, the second Visions of Shiva single "How muchcan you take ?" was also successful.
That same year, Harald switched to "Logic Records" and focused onhis solo project. In January 1994, he released the single "Loops ofInfinity", which made it one of the first trance productions to theGerman charts, followed by the 2nd album "Thinking about myself".
In 1995 he left "Logic Records" and founded his own label "Time outof Mind", where he clearly separated from the classic trance sound andproved to be very experimental in the following years.
Engaged with his role as a composer & producer was his presenceas a live performer: his virtuosic skills on the keyboards andsynthesizers gave him an exception and made him one of the mostpopular live acts in clubs and the ever-increasing rave events("Mayday", "Time Warp", "Tribal Gathering", etc.). In addition togroups such as "Orbital", "The Prodigy" and "Underworld", he createdthe ground for electronic artists from the techno environment to alsoperform at the established rock festivals. In 1997 he played at "Rockam Ring" / "Rock im Park "- as the first techno artist ever.
At the same time, he was interested in writing music for thetheater. In cooperation with the "Pyro Space Ballet" theTechno-Musical "Futura" had world premiere in April 1994 at the"Akademie der Künste Berlin" (AdK). Two years later he got theoffer to realize the soundtrack to Max Frisch's theatrical play"Andorra" in the state theater Stuttgart under the direction ofCrescentia Dünsser & Otto Kukla.
At the end of 1999, he retired from the "techno scene" for manyreasons, withdrew from the public, and since then has devoted himselfmainly to the composing of classical-contemporary music for theaterproductions. For example, in 2000 a "Musik für Streichquartett"(music for string quartet) was created for the video opera "Memory",and in 2003 music for soprano & countertenor &harddiscrecording for Susan Sontags theater play "The woman from thesea" - both for "Theater Neumarkt / Zurich", directed by Otto Kukla.
In 2002, Harald became acquainted with the music producerChristopher von Deylen, who celebrated international success as"Schiller". This was the project "Blüchel & von Deylen". InJanuary 2004 the first album "Bi Polar" appeared on "TrueNote /Edel". Due to the good response from the buyers, the sequel album"Mare Stellaris" appeared as the soundtrack for "Long Night of theStars", which had been initiated by all German planetaries withspecial programs.

The "Zauberberg" trilogy inspired by Thomas Mann's novel were hisfirst solo releases under his original name. There he created ratherexperimental "listening pieces", which may be roughly integrated into"dark ambient" or "modern art music" categories. The first part, "DieToteninsel" published in September 2006, was inspired by a painting byArnold Böcklin of the same name. In April 2007, the second part,"caged", was published - a play on words refering to John Cage andbeing a "caged" prisoner, the inner life of a person "being lost fromthe world".
Furthermore, Harald continued his theatrical work at the beginningof 2007 with Federico García Lorca's play "Bernarda Alba'shouse" in the production by Hans Neuenfels for the "SchauspielKöln". In 2009, he composed the music for two plays: In May, thepremiere of "Danach: Wie Robinson!?" in Berlin "Theater unterm Dach"(according to Arno Schmidt, directed by Lina Antje Gühne); inOctober was the first performance of "Tannöd" in the HamburgerSchauspielhaus (by Andrea Maria Schenkel, director: CrescentiaDünßer). Premiered on 18 February 2010, the play"Eislaufen", focusing on the life and work of poetess IngeMüller, was performed at the Berlin "Theater unterm Dach", beinga co-operation between Harald and the "Kollegen & Gühne"group.

After several years of concentrated engagement with the piano andmoving from Berlin to a countryside place, Harald returned to thestage in October 2016 with "solo piano concerts", for example on 28November at the Berlin "Volksbühne / Roter Salon". Hi calls hisnew composition style "Romantic Minimalism", with classical referenceto the minimal music of "Steve Reich", "Philip Glass" and "Simeon tenHold". There are also connections with neoclassical artists, such as"Ludovico Einaudi", "Yann Tiersen" and "Max Richter".
In 2020, the CD-Album "N . O . M - no ordinary moments" has beenreleased, accompanied by a high quality 144 pages 32x23 cm art bookwith scores, texts, drawings, documents and photographs.

15 minutes shortfilm from 1991 by Silvia Kirchhof, soundtrack byCosmic Baby, with thanks to "Harry Blüchel" :-)
"Die Fliegen-Klatsche" is a very personal piece of work of the artistSilvia Kirchhof; it is made to her childhood as daughter of apsychiatrist and a neurologist, who integrated his experiences withart, film, and photography into his word: her first exposure toschizophrenia and creativity. The unnaturally projected faces in thevideo are taken from 16 mm scientific films of her father and hiscolleagues, which she watched as a child, basically as a substitutefor television.

The following German text is printed on the booklet (German release):
Hört aufdas, was wir euch raten.
And this one is on the US release:
We travel through time. Our language is even more complex than the oneyou earthlings refer to as hieroglyphics. For it is written in sounds. Insounds of harmony. Our bodies do not exist. We can paint our feelings inthe most beautiful colours you will never be able to perceive. Andtherefore you will never be fortunate enough to experience your souls.
But still you are like us!
Can you swim in the rain like we can? Or even climb onto the clouds?Perhaps even dance round the sun with us? Or will you help us to plant newstars? How wonderful it would be to find new friends and finally bindourselves to planet home. Then we could embrace the giant trees togetherand preserve all those wonderful atoms. Never again would you have to roamthe awful nothingness in order to grasp at entirety. Listen to our advice.Believe us. It will only take a small, cautious step and you will gainentry into the dimensions of love. Then you will feel that nature on yourblue planet is nothing but the paradise that you seek all your life.
Yes you are like us!
Your probes are transmitting greetings to us. We liked what we heard. It touched something sunken into infinite oblivion for a long time. Thus,we have crossed the borders. We want to emigrate into your world. Willyou welcome us? Or perhaps you want to transplant yourselves into ourworld? Whatever the choice may be - we are on our way - on our way toyou.
For we are like you!
Cosmic Baby / S. Kömm
Cosmic Baby, Berlin Oktober 1994
English translation by David Vespremi and me:
When I watched "Blade Runner" in 1982 I was still in elementaryschool. I was overcome! "Blade Runner" gave an extremely impressivevision of the near future: multicultural mega-cities, the power ofmultinational corporations in the fields of computer-, electronic- andcommunications industries; the climatic upheavals as a result from theloss of the ecological balance; the problem of not being able todifferentiate between humans and their similar artificial creatures.Twelve years later, these subjects are more of a part of our realitythan before. The difference being, what in 1982 was still "sciencefiction", is for us now an almost apparent reality.
In music, the transition from acoustic to electronic music happenedat breakneck pace. It seems likely that the 90s of our century willbe called the era of "techno" music.
In the film Dr. Tyrell was called "father" by Roy Batty, thereplicant. In a similar way I also want to call Vangelis, thecomposer of "Blade Runner", one of the "fathers" of my musicaldevelopment. As such, I was incredibly proud and happy when Ireceived the offer to rearrange this fantastic musical work with myoutlook of the 90s.
Cosmic Baby, Berlin October 1994
English translation by David Vespremi and me:
When it becomes difficult, in face of thefloodwithout comment, but very well filtered information and formattedthought patterns are there for you to concentrate and to listen to, tofinally draw your own conclusions, then there is a world, wherespeed is a value as such, and often (for you) thereis only theemergency brake. I stopped the train atfull speed on an open track, despite pressure from the outside, myinner restlessness urged me to reach the fast connection train in thenext station absolutely. It's also called escapism: the escape fromthis reality. Where to? I created for myself a gingerbread worldconsisting of romantic harmonies.
Starting with "Stunde Null" and "14Pieces" I set myself in motion again with my own power and myown plan. Without romantic escapist thoughts, and in an abstract way,I'm busy with these events. You might say as the third part of atrilogy, "Kinetik" brings back rhythm and motion tomy music withclubsounds for the dance-floor andthereby completes my new musical beginning.
