New 'Carson Callback' Rule on 'The Voice' Gives a Contestant a Second Chance

“The Voice” Season 28 has officially kicked off with coaches Reba McEntire, Niall Horan, Snoop Dogg and Michael Bublé forming their group of talented singers.

During the Sept 22 premiere, a new rule was announced that gave host Carson Daly more power when it came to saving a contestant.

This season Daly was able to invoke his new Carson Callback rule.

What Is the Carson Callback?

The Carson Callback is a card that Daly can give to only one singer during the Blind Auditions to save them. That singer will have 24 hours to prepare another audition song and get a second chance to perform for the coaches.

Who Received the Carson Callback?

During the premiere episode, Daly used his Carson Callback card.

While many coaches gave their best pitch to persuade singers to join their team, a handful of contestants didn't get any chair turns.

One in particular was Ryan Mitchell, a Los Angeles native, who shared how music helped him in his recovery from alcohol.

The 25-year-old sang “Cigarette Daydreams” by Cage the Elephant, yet didn’t get chosen by any team. As Bublé explained how he “chickened out” to turn his chair, off to the side Daly was heard saying, “Why didn’t you push the button?”

Bublé even said that looking back he might “regret” not choosing Mitchell. That is when Daly invoked his new Carson Callback rule.

After Mitchell left the stage, Daly met with him and his family, expressing his frustration over the coaches' decision.

“I’m really frustrated, sometimes the coaches just don’t get it right,” he told the singer. “There is something I think I can do. I would like to try to help if you’re willing to take a walk with me.”

Daly explained that he’s seen singers “fall through the cracks and I’ve never been able to do anything about it, until right now.”

“You’re just too good to let go,” Daly told Mitchell, adding that he believes that in his “second and last chance” he could get a chair turn.

In the Sept. 23 episode, Mitchell returned to the stage and sang “...Baby One More Time” by Britney Spears. This time, McEntire turned her chair and secured Mitchell's participation in the show.

“Being a callback from Carson Daly, wouldn’t that be cool if he won the whole thing,” McEntire said.
